Kai Honu Hale, 3-Level Oceanfront Home with views from every room

Let me start off by saying I would not recommend this facility. Being right on the water was fantastic, but for the money charged not worth it. When we arrived the front door was unlocked even though it had a combination lock, could not make it work during our stay. The toilet on the second level was soiled. The towels were thin, looking like they have been used for a long time. The front handrail going up to the front door was loose, not sure how much force it could accept before it failed. We could not use the “porch” on the third level due to its questionable appearance and the metal support poles holding up the porch looked like they were repaired by a novice. The shower on the third level also leaked, flooding the bathroom around the toilet. Not a good ecperience.

Stunning! To enter the door and look out on the ocean, it was everything I dreamed it would be when I booked it. We loved the peace and quiet and beauty as we sat outside and looked out over the shoreline and expanse of ocean. Would stay again in a heartbeat and all instructions for check-in were clear and easy.

Just returned from a lovely 6 Night Stay with my wife and almost 80 year old father and we had an amazing visit. Viewing and listening to the waves crashing against the rocks day and night was just spectacular.Everything was clean, worked and exceeded our expectations. We went grocery shopping and prepared most of our meals at the house. Every utensil we needed was there including plenty of condiments, knives, cutting boards, pots, pans, plates, bowls, silverware, rice cooker, coffee maker (worked for grounds and KCups), plus a Weber BBQ that we used for grilling up some burgers! Refrigerator and freezer were solid (thanks for the ice cubes as well as blue ice packs!) We've never stayed at a rental that had such a prepared kitchen. Thank you!We packed light so that we could return with gifts for family and friends and utilized the full size laundry and dryer in the garage.We didn't need to pack any beach towels as there were plenty of those for us to utilize when we visited the Kohala Coast.Plenty of fans and windows to open to move the air around and we all slept great on the comfortable beds.Only complaint was from Pops that the TV wasn't big enough, but to the Mrs. and me, it fit in fine with the decor. The WiFi was great and powered up multiple computers and tablets for us to watch our sports. Roku TV worked great and included DirecTV for some of the standard cable station and local channels!A great secluded house with all the amenities! Thank you.

Such a fun amazing place. We loved this home hearing the crashing waves and watching the turtles.

Perfection

This is an amazing gem on VRBO, we stayed here for several night as we toured the Hilo side of the island, and this house was great. The views, especially sunrise, were spectaular, honestly the pictures do not do this house justice. Liv did a great job communicating with us, would definitely stay here again.

Nice place with an amazing view. The house was clean and everything functioned properly. We had a number of things booked before we arrived and wished we had either booked less or added a day just so we could sit and enjoy the ocean. We saw sea turtles and a whale! The water is closer than it appears in the pictures. There is no AC but for the most part open windows and fans kept the place comfortable (February visit).

Great place and space for our first visit to Hawaii. We really enjoyed the view of the ocean which could be seen from almost every room in the house. The upper bedroom balcony was great for spotting the whales off in the distance. Also enjoyed sipping my coffee out on the patio in the mornings as the sun came up. The little trail out to the rocks was a favorite spot for my husband to just take in the ocean views. The host literally thought of everything we would need for our stay. Appreciate having all the comforts of home during our stay. Although it may have been a little longer drive into town to the nearest Walmart, it was worth it to be right on the ocean in a private tropical like setting away from the “city” hustle and bussle. Only thing that might have made our stay even better would have been air conditioning. But then we wouldn’t have the sounds of the ocean to listen to with the windows closed. Thank you for making our 35th Anniversary trip to Hawaii an enjoyable experience. We’d highly recommend staying at Kai Hona Hal!

Liv was amazing from the time we booked until we checked out. Everything was exactly as expected. The house was relaxing and beautiful and a slice of heaven!!!! We enjoyed watching the turtles and listening and watching the waves hit against the cliff. Exactly what we were looking for!

This was a wonderful place to stay on our trip! Updated very nicely! Clean and well maintained. Host was very good about communicating and giving detailed directions to the home!! We loved our stay and would highly recommend staying here!!

House upgrades were well done. Obviously, the view is priceless. The neighborhood is easy to walk with friendly people. Felt secure. Everything worked as you'd expect. Even without AC, opening the windows in the late afternoon/ evening was perfect.

Charming home located right on the ocean. It was in a very quiet neighborhood. We very much appreciated having access to a washer and dryer on the property. We will definitely stay again if we get back to the area.

Gorgeous view. Very quiet. You won’t be lonely! The cockroaches like it too! We had a great stay until we found the bodies of dead cockroaches.The host knows about the pest infestation. They claim to get the house treated once a month. I guess the poison if the exterminator is why they died at an impressive size - or old age.

This is our favorite ocean rental. I highly recommend this house, the views are breathtaking, house is beautiful and relaxing. Liv answered all questions very promptly.

Great place! Exactly as described and shown in the photos. We would stay here again.FYI for any light sleepers- the ocean waves are so loud against the shoreline here, it sounds like an aggressive thunderstorm (could be a pro or con).

Comfy house with million dollar view

WOW! The view was fabulous, the house wonderful, the host very accommodating, and we were close to all the things we wanted to see. Highly recommend.

The location was amazing and the house was great. The host had great communication. The refrigerator wasn’t working properly and the host got back to me within hours and replaced it that day. We would definitely stay here again.

This was an amazing space to stay in for our visit to the big island! The home was immaculately clean, had everything we needed to be comfortable (including a washer & dryer), and afforded incredible views of the ocean (just steps away). The location is convenient for those based around Hilo and the neighbohood is quiet & walkable. We appreciated Liz's responsive communication prior to arriving and the ease checking in & out. I really like that the host answered when ask questions but did not message without need. Also the kitchen was great liked the fact they left spices and things from other guest that had stayed.

This is my second time I wanted to show my granddaughter why her Nana is moving to Hawaii and this is one of the places she fell in love with her. I fell in love with the place has been renovated, so it’s very shiny and clean, but only takes secondsplace when it comes to the view always moving. Unpredictable and so much marine life this time we saw dolphins and turtles. The Dolphins were showing off. I’d like to share some of the pictures of this home and I must say the pictures do not do it justice! Mahalo

We recently stayed at this property and it was a perfect fit for our group of 6! We were all very comfortable and loved the view! Great location and easy to get to a variety of activities around the island. Liv was easy to work with and had an easy check in / out process.

Gorgeous, calming and serene. It is one of the place where you just sot in front of ocean all the long and enjoy the mesmerizing beauty of ocean. Place is newly renovated upgraded neat and clean and has everything you need to have a comfortable stay. We absolutely love this place and will stay again future.

My husband and I stayed there for 5 days and it was incredible!! The views of the ocean and listening to the waves crashing on the volcanic rocks were breathtaking!! It was so nice staying in a home instead of a hotel or condo. We highly recommend this beautiful gome

I well recommend this place 100%. Clean, complete with pretty much everything you need including washer and dryer like staying in your own house. nice location, close to restaurant and of course the ocean on your backyard couldn’t ask for more.We enjoyed our stay. since I took the time to read the comments I was expecting things not to be perfect with this stay, had I not researched the property I may have been disappointed due to high hopes, with that said knowing everything with the house was not going to be perfect, I will say we had a great time. location and views are amazing the constant crashing of the waves got to be a little much by the end of the stay, but overall we had a great time.

Funky cool house overlooking the ocean. Close to Hilo and the beaches, as well as the Volcanos National park. Lovely neighborhood.

We stayed in this home for the full month of March 2025. We rated this a 10 based on our top three requirements: next to the ocean, clean, comfortable beds. This home met all three requirements. The ocean with its spectacular crashing waves, stunning views, and swimming turtles was wonderful. The sound of the waves at night along with the comfortable bed made for excellent sleeping. The home was clean and the two new area rugs were a nice update. However, as others have noted, this home would benefit from additional updates. For example, the couch is very uncomfortable. Our inquiries via email were answered promptly. Overall, we enjoyed our stay.

Amazing views turtles and whales galore.

We really enjoyed our stay. The house was nice, but definitely needs some TLC. That did not deter from the beauty of the water below. We saw a turtle nearly everyday. It was a great place to visit all the sites nearby and we enjoyed the small town of Pahoa. The house was furnished well. Kitchen well stocked. We were grateful for the washer and dryer as well! All in all, very relaxing. The beds were good. We had one night that was very wet and it was a little humid in the house. But listening to the waves hit those rocks put me to sleep everytime! The group at the VRBO were there for a reunion along with several Big Island residents, all good freiends.

Amazing location where the back yard neighbor is the Pacific! The ocean sounds are soothing. We viewed turtles and frolicking whales right from the back porch. We booked our 2025 stay before we checked out of our 2024 stay! Once we decide on vacation dates, we’ll be booking again! As a matter of fact we would change our vacation dates if needed to book this amazing place!

The property was conveniently located in and out of the way location with views that seem to never stop from every floor of this home. Words cannot express the power and strength of this home. Will definitely come back again.

This is a great little house, very well designed to take advantage of its fabulous ocean view that all rooms get to enjoy. Description very accurate, manager super responsive. It's for the kind of guest who likes to throw all the windows open and listen to the wind and the thundering waves. If that's you, take it. Excellent for whale watching, too.

The view from the house is amazing. The ocean can get a little loud and shakes the house at night. Overall it is a great experience.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Three bedrooms gave everyone their own space. Well equipped kitchen for family get together meals. Sitting outside to watch the ocean right out front during the day was amazing and star gazing at night was unbelievable. A memorable stay!

Wonderful stay! Loved everything about it.

This property has incredible views! It’s definitely an older home than is in need of some updating but the beauty of the crashing ocean waves mostly makes up for it. There was no dishwasher or air conditioning but that didn’t affect

Overall, it was a good stay, and I would stay here again. The view and sounds of the ocean were amazing as promised. The beds were comfortable, which is a huge priority for me. The location is not super convenient to activities, but it is a quiet neighborhood. The only major complaint for us was the living room furniture. Every piece was uncomfortable and falling apart. There was no really comfortable place to sit together and chat.

The property was exactly as described. Great location and central to all we wanted to do. We slept great with ocean breezes and never had a problem with no a/c. The driveway was steep but we knew that from our instructions and we expected that with level where we parked and unloaded.

I loved this beach house rental. The host did an excellent job stocking the unit. The house was Very clean and the unit has everything you need for your stay!

This property is located beautifully and is well maintained. Beds were comfortable and home was perfect for our needs. We could sit for hours watching and listening to waves.

The view was spectacular and we loved the quiet neighborhood. The host was quick to respond and was friendly. Glad there was a washer with detergent, dishes and dish soap as well as shampoo and body wash. Home was easily accessible to us and parking was perfect. The floor was sticky, i told everone to wear shoes. The towlels did not smell good, they smelled like they were left in the washer too long. Front door did not have a dead bolt lock, we propt it with a chair. It was HOT, no AC, so i had to put 2 fans in my room and it was still hot. I now know its not common to have AC because of the cost of electricity. It was so hot in the house that my hersheys chocolate bar, never solidified! Also, be prepared to hear crashing waves all night, which i know is soothing to some :) Overall, great stay besides the AC. AGAIN, THE VIEW WAS SPECTACULAR!!!!!

Amazing view, right on the water in a quiet neighborhood. Very relaxing with the sound of the waves crashing. Also nice bonus that they don’t have a long “to-do” list upon checkout like many other places do. We had a great stay!

We decided to stay here because we wanted to experience the Southeast side of the island and be close to both Hilo and the Volcanoes National Park. This house was well suited to that, being around 45 minutes to either destination with easy driving routes. The house itself is beautiful inside with 3 levels to enjoy. Our son occupied one of the middle level sleeping rooms, and my wife and I occupied the top level bedroom. Wonderful crashing surf sounds all night and stunning black basalt rocks to gaze at from the back yard. No air conditioning but the breeze of the ocean and the numerous ceiling fans cooled down the house for sleeping quite well. Fully equipped kitchen connected to comfortable living room area was delightful to enjoy our dinners each night. Wifi was great throughout the house which was very helpful for our son who needed to connect a few times for remote work with the mainland. The neighborhood was very quiet and peaceful, walkable and felt safe. Friendly folks to talk with if out for a stroll and even a nearby Little Free Library box ! I especially enjoyed all the tastefully displayed artwork and decor throughout the house. Very unique and worthwhile place to stay! We had NO problems at all during our stay. I would highly recommend to anyone! My only regret was not budgeting in an entire day to just STAY PUT, not go anywhere, and enjoy this space and setting. Richard, you were an awesome host and thanks for all your detailed instructions.

Here on the Big Island to celebrate a milestone birthday. I opted to split my 2 week stay and see both sides of the island. This house is Just wanted I needed. Very quite neighborhood, easy to get to and having the ocean talk to you every minute of your stay is a great way to relax and mostly disconnect. Plenty of room, nice bed(s), everything I needed was there. Please note, there isn't much of a nightlife, (and Really that's what I loved about it). Plenty of coast line to walk/hike and I spent at least an hour every morning doing just that to catch sunrise. Very beautiful. Lots of Hawaiian history nearby, too It was a great stay!

We enjoyed our 4-night stay. The house was clean, lots of windows to keep you cool, and was in a very quiet neighborhood. We would stay here again.

Liv was a friendly host, and everything was cleanly set up when we got to the property. The ocean view as just as depicted in the photos -- breathtaking and close up. Liv had a comprehensive guide prepped in the living room area, and the kitchen and laundry machines helped us have a more home-like experience during our family vacation. The neighborhood was quaint and nice with a beach park close by, and ~$400/night was a decent deal considering the view and number of people it can host too. But it did come with the caveats of being an ocean-side property that's not commercially managed. The property did not have an AC (only ceiling fans), which was okay temperature-wise in rainy Hilo, but it was quite humid and sticky (the wooden floors and countertops, for example). There were quite a bit of bugs crawling around the walls and ceilings that we had no good solutions for. At night the crashing waves felt uncomfortably close (the windows were not the most soundproof). The main tourist attractions were also all 1hr+ drive away. All of this could be a great experience for travelers who love nature and were prepared for this experience. But as short-term first time visitors of Big Island, I don't think this was what we were looking for. All in all, would recommend this property for someone who's looking for a retreat vs. family vacation.

We got to the house right as hurricane Hone was approaching the island and loved watching the waves from the safety of the home. We were able to see turtles and dolphins from the living room! Also very quiet and relaxed neighborhood. Note that the closest beach access is 40 min away in Hilo.

The view was magnificent. The hosts were gracious. The privacy was great. However, we had a very difficult time sleeping in the bed due to comfort which is very important on vacation. I feel for what we paid for a week the property should be upgraded to better mattresses, towels and linens. The worst part of our stay was 100% the no ac. This is our first time on the big island. We spent a week in Kona and a week in Hilo. I almost checked out of the room due to the humidity & heat without ac. We left early and came home late for a cold shower and sleep and was unable to enjoy the property due to being uncomfortable there. That being said the hosts were amazing and that’s important.

The property isn't in the most convenient location for sightseeing. You will want to rent a car if you stay here. But you get a truly beautiful oceanside view. If you want a quiet place to enjoy the sounds of the waves crashing, this is perfect. The house was clean and comfortable. Some things in the house could use some updates to be a bit more modern, and there's no air conditioning, so it can get warm in the house if it's hot outside. But overall we had a great stay!

The area was great. The view beautiful. We were there during some unusually warm days in July according to the weather reporters on tv so it was very warm inside the house. No air conditioner which is not uncommon in Hawaii. There were lots of fans and if you used the cross ventilation with the windows, by morning you are reaching for the covers. Saw turtles and dolphins as we watched the world go by.
