Kennebunk, Maine
The house, originally named 'Blue Roof' by our grandparents, is charming and one of a kind. The house was built during an age where design favored rustic and idiosyncratic elements. From the quiet street, you walk through a flower-filled courtyard and arched front door to an enormous hacienda-styled living room/dining room. This room is furnished with comfy sofas and antiques. It also has a 10 foot long dining room table (designed after one in The Metropolitan Museum of Art) which has hosted innumerable lobsterfests. House comes with 1 kayak, 2 SUP (stand up paddle) boards, canoe and 3 bikes.
The fully equipped eat-in kitchen is pine-paneled with windows overlooking golf course and courtyard. It is a cook's delight with great work space, modern appliances and ample pots and pans. There is direct access to the deck from the kitchen. There are four comfortable bedrooms. Two are in the main part of the house: one upstairs with a queen bed and the other on the main floor with a queen bed. Both bedrooms have ensuite bathrooms - one with a claw foot tub and the other with an oversized tiled shower. The other two bedrooms are in a wing off the kitchen, accessed by passage through a 100 year old converted garage, which functions as a storage room, pantry, laundry, and gallery for interesting historical artifacts from the early 20th century. These bedrooms are pine paneled - one has a queen bed and the other a double bed. There is a half bath that connects the two rooms and a shower room immediately outside the bedrooms. There is also an outdoor shower with hot water in a private enclosed area off the deck.
There are three lovely places to sit outside - in the courtyard watching the birds play in the birdbath; on the deck off the kitchen eating lunch and watching the golfers hit their approach shots to the first green; or on the 2nd story balcony sipping cocktails while the sun goes down. Kenneth Roberts (December 8, 1885– July 21, 1957), a native of Maine and best–selling author of such historical novels as “Northwest Passage”, “Arundel”, and “Rabble in Arms”, built Blue Roof in 1924. It was fashioned from the timbers of a nearby barn. Roberts designed it with the help of three friends, one his mentor, the novelist Booth Tarkington (“Penrod”), who summered in Kennebunkport.
Keywords: Former residence of Maine author Kenneth Roberts, located on the first fairway of the Webhannet Golf Course and minutes by foot (two blocks) to the beach. The sound of the breakers on the beach can be heard, especially after dark
Charming
Maine has been our favorite New England vacation area for the past 47 years. We were able to enjoy our time there with some of our children and grandchildren. Our sons reveled in returning to visit the beaches and the memories made during the vacations of their childhood. Our 6 year old grandson from California was fascinated with the idea of an outdoor shower and his 9 year old sister loved the early morning walks along Kennebunk Beach and, of course, shopping in the village of Kennebunkport. My husband and I simply enjoyed watching them experience the location - on the golf course and a short walk to the beach - and the house which offered places to play, watch the golfers pass by as we ate regularly on the deck, and many areas to 'cozy up' with a book. It gave us more wonderful memories. Thank you to the Brown family, we loved our time.
We arrived with our broad family (kids and grandparents) and everyone seemed to have a splendid time. For a beach house, it is surprisingly well appointed and the living room (great room) is an excellent gathering place. I could go on and on, but it should suffice to say that this is an outstanding house in a wonderful location. ':–
My family spent a great week at Blue Roof. This is a lovingly maintained family home, filled with history. The great room is beautifully furnished, and the kitchen is well-equipped with an abundance of cutlery, dishes, serving pieces and even sharp knives, which is frequently not the case with rentals. Other amenities include a state of the art washer and dryer and an amazing shower. We also appreciated that linens and towels were provided, and my family made good use of the bicycles that were left for use by renters. In the morning we enjoyed sitting on the patio overlooking the golf course sipping our coffee. The location was perfect for us - close enough to walk to the beach yet off the busy main street. The owner could not have been easier to work with and was amazingly responsive when a problem with the stove arose (out of propane). She was easy to reach and the situation was resolved that same afternoon. There is also a handyman who is easily reachable and available. The owner also has an instruction/advice manual for the cottage, which was very helpful and delightfully written!
This is an older, unusual home in Kennebunk beach on a golf course and a very short walk to the beach. The home has 2 bedrooms and baths in the main house and 2 more in a connected extension with a shared bath. There is a small but functional kitchen with a good sized eating area. There is a very large great room with large dining table and plenty of sitting space. There is a lovely deck on the first hole of the Webhannet golf course. The house has washer, dryer, dish washer and microwave. The house was very well provided for in terms of what one would need for a week's stay, including a well stocked kitchen. The property was very clean on arrival. The owner was very good to work with in setting up the rental The property works very well as a vacation home for up to 8 people. Its location allows you to get to Rte 1 without going thru the traffic of Kennebunk. There definitely is the feel of being in a funky but charming New England home. The one downside is that the mattresses were too old and needed to be replaced.
Our family absolutely loved our visit in your historic beach house in Kennebunk Beach! The home is very cozy and clean, also everything is available that you might need. The location is very close to the beach and to the quaint little town. We all said we would love to stay here again next year! Best family vacation house!! Loved it!!
