Clendenin, West Virginia
Black Bear Lodge gives an updated twist to rustic West Virginia living, you will fall in love with the warm mountain views and quiet rustle of the leaves.
Benedict Haid Farm is a family-owned business open, mostly for weddings, for the past 30 years. It features a large, historic 1860s hand-hewn log home on 400-acres, adjoining 10,000 acres of undeveloped corporate property. This is a nice place to get away for a while, or host a small retreat. The nearest commercial building is six miles away. :-)
During your stay pick any of the three large bedrooms with premium queen-sized beds, private bedroom decks, and equipped with their own privet bathrooms. The first person to the master bedroom enjoys the jetted tub for relaxing all evening long. The property provides spacious parking, ample firewood, a complimentary gas grill with unlimited gas, and free use of electric car recharge station.
There is walking access to a pond, Margaret's Pond, roughly .8 mile from Black Bear Lodge. You will have access to the surrounding woods, Margaret's Pond, and the nearby farmland if you want to make such arrangements. There is a cattle farm on the property that we can arrange for you to see. If you are interested in holding an event, please look up our website and contact us. The newly-renovated barn is available to be rented for events, as well. It was renovated using logs from historic log cabins formerly located in the South Hills section of Charleston.
Steve and Lee, the caretakers for the Benedict Haid Farm, live 100 yards away and can be contacted when necessary.
Dutch Ridge is a largely undeveloped area and contains some of the highest hills and mountains in this part of West Virginia. Hope you visit Black Bear Lodge the starting point for a rustic, scenic and beautiful vacation in the hills of West Virginia.
We loved everything about this place. So beautiful and quiet, and a place to be away from it all. We brought in a cooler with food and had everything we needed. Everyone slept great, too.
Myself and three friends stayed here for the weekend. The location is lovely and very clean. It is, however, at the top of a long and windy road. If you are not used to driving in the hills, it may be daunting, but we got used to it. There were mutiple, old barnwood cabins on the property and would make a lovely location for a wedding. The caretakers onsite took great care of us, and were responsive to our messages. We brought groceries with us, but be aware, there are no groceries of any kind on site. If you want it, bring it with you, including coffee, spices and condiments, etc. There were challenging trails to walk, and beautiful scenery everywhere and wildlife to enjoy. There is NO WiFi and wireless service is spotty, so it is a great place to unwind. We enjoyed ourselves very much and would recommend.
The 4 of us are life long friends that live in different states, and wanted to spent a weekend together. The Benedict Haid Black Bear cabin was the perfect get away location - clean, and well appointed, and the property and cabin views were gorgeous. The large building and house up the road looked to be perfect for a wedding. I highly recommend the Benedict Haid property.
Such a sweet place to get away, and get away you do! Once you have made the interesting trek up you won't want to leave, because it wraps you in comfort and beauty, with a gorgeous spacious structure built with integrity, beautiful grounds, and the backdrop of the West Virginia mountains. There are beautiful sleighbeds in each room, a lovely kitchen, interesting art pieces and a large inviting fireplace. Watch the sun set on the back bedroom deck, and rise on the front porch and enjoy watching the deer and birds. This property is close to hiking trails and Charleston is nearby with some interesting looking shops and restaurants. Upon arrival Steven was welcoming and helpful in answering questions, and the owner Emmett was quick to respond to inquiries as well. Highly recommended...
Disappointed with no wifi, and worst jacuzzi experience.
The property was just as it appeared online. Be prepared to take your time driving up the mountain, the roads are narrow and there are several blind curves. Once on top the views are great! about 20 to 30 minute drive into Charlottesville if you want to get into the city. Gas grill and everything you need to prepare meals on site. We did discover a small pizza place called Lola's. Highly recommend. We plan on going back some time to view the fall color.
Very nice property on top of the hill with beautiful views in any direction. It was very relaxing watching the wildlife from the porch. The house was very clean and accommodating. Even though we were out on the motorcycles most of the day we enjoyed every moment at the house. The caretaker of the property was very helpful and polite. We would definitely stay there again if we were going to be in the area and would recommend this place to anyone looking for a nice and quiet house with a view!
Our stay was wonderful. It is quiet and peaceful out in the country. It's a little ways off the beaten path. It's probably not necessary but I would recommend AWD if you are staying when snow is on the ground. House was very clean and check in was a breeze. The pictures were spot on. The EV charger attached to the nearby garage is a nice perk. Only complaint was that there was no coffee for the kuerig or regular coffee pot. If you are a coffee drinker then bring your own beans. I would recommend this if you are staying in the area.
We love this little retreat. Do yourself a favor and go!
We have been avid VRBO travelers for over five years and this property is the most beautiful and unique. The home is reconstructed civil war era barn wood with updated kitchen and baths. It sits atop a mountain the the morning sun rise from the the front porch is amazing. The sunset from the back decks is equal in beauty. The acreage is mowed and very walkable. The interior is clean, comfortable and very well theme-decorated. We would recommend checking in by dusk and carry your foods and essentials for the first day, as the roadtrip up and down the mountain is about an hour quests who are not familiar with surroundings. The property hosts are very responsive. This is a must stay.
