The Varrell House is located in the heart of York Harbor, Maine and a 3 minute walk to the family friendly York Harbor beach. Listen to the fishing boats as they depart the Harbor each morning, smell the salty air and feel the gentle ocean breeze. The home was originally built as a guest house (Varrell House -- Annex) in the early 20 Century and served as a Bed & Breakfast (Canterbury House) in the latter part of the 20th Century. You’ll have plenty of room for gathering withfamily and friends -- including a newly renovated kitchen (winter 2017-18) - two large sitting areas, a new (2021) and large front porch and a new lawn with gas fire pit shaded by gorgeous old trees. Some of the rooms and grounds offer partial views of the harbor where time will slowly pass as you watch the boats come and go. 10 bedrooms with 7 bathrooms means plenty of room for the whole family without long wait times to take a shower! The charming home was renovated a few years ago to include a new kitchen, 2 new bathrooms and brand new furnishings to ensure you have a very comfortable stay. We offer one of the best per room/per night fees or per person/per night of any large rental in York Harbor. We also have a sister property - The Briars at Homeaway - #4035882 that is just a few doors away. Both have a long history of exceptional reviews.

Our home is in an ideal spot to enjoy the sought after environs of York Harbor. Guests can easily walk to the Harbor Beach known for its family friendly atmosphere. The Cliff Walk starts at the Harbor Beach and offers spectacular views of the rocky Maine coast and stunning Victorian mansions. The Hartley Mason estate is a beautiful public park overlooking the Harbor Beach with flower gardens and plenty of shade from the summer sun. Moulton Park is 2 minutes down the street from us with a fantastic space for any outdoor activity with lots of sun and shade. The Fisherman’s Walk is steps away where you stroll along the river and enjoy views of the boats coming in and out of the harbor – including lobsterman with their fresh catch of the day. Fisherman’s walk brings you to the Wiggly Bridge-Steadman Woods where you can take a loop through the forest or continue walking to the historic York Village. York Village (less than five minutes away by car in case you lost track of how long you’ve been walking) was settled in 1624 (3 years after Plymouth Plantation!) and offers a rich array of historical buildings (e.g Old Gaol – one of the oldest jails in America; a one room school house; Jefferds Tavern; The Old Burying Ground featuring 18th-19th century carved tombstones; and the John Hancock Warehouse etc.).

The Harbor is rich in culture and fine dining. The York Art Association is located a few houses down the street from us. George Marshall store gallery is located through the Steadman Woods and has a series of art exhibits during the year (the curator lives down the street from our house). There are other small galleries and shops in the Village. York Harbor Inn, Stage Neck Inn, and Chapman Cottage each offer award winning dining and are all a five minute walk from our home. The Dockside Restaurant is located across the harbor (five minute drive away) and is a great spot to view the marina and have a great meal. The marina offers boat and kayak rentals for those wishing to experience some “ocean” culture.

The York area and surrounding towns offer a never ending list of things to do. Visit lighthouses. Go whale watching. Explore forts and historical sights. Enjoy the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge. Hike Mt. Agamenticus for breathtaking views of the ocean to the east and forest/mountains to the west (you can also drive to the top if you are feeling lazy and visit the nature exhibit in the old ski lodge). Shop at the Kittery Outlets (save this for those rainy days). Visit the York Beach boardwalk with an amusement park, bowling, arcade, shops, live entertainment, salt water taffy and more. Hiking-Biking-Boating-Sunbathing…or just reading a book in the many nooks of our beautiful home. You will love the relaxed pace of Maine. There is a reason our state motto is Maine, the way life should be.

Looking to accommodate an even bigger group Ask us about The Briars, our 8 bedroom home, located just a few doors away -- homeaway # 4035882. We also have a third property, with 6 bedrooms in very close proximity.

Overall this was an excellent place to stay. Especially for the space. We had 14 people and each couple had their own room and their own bathrooms. It’s located in a great spot and the front porch was an awesome place to rest and enjoy the cool breezes. There was plenty of space to do a family dinner and good amount of parking.Easy walks to local sights and easy drives to Salem, Portland, Portsmouth NH. All members of our family rated this vacation in their top 5 and all liked the house and the porch.

Our stay was absolutely incredible. We hosted a retreat for grieving mothers, with 15 moms plus a few staff members, and this home could not have been more perfect for our group. The house was incredibly spacious, with plenty of room for everyone to gather comfortably while also offering peaceful spaces to step away and reflect.Lance was hugely attentive throughout the entire stay and made everything so easy for us. The home was beautifully equipped, exceptionally clean, and had more than enough bedrooms and space for our large group. Many of the women especially loved sitting together on the front porch, and we also enjoyed time around the fire pit one evening. The location was amazing — just a short walk to a small beach where we watched the sunrise, and only a couple minutes from Long Sands Beach. We also loved getting to visit Nubble Lighthouse while we were there. This is truly a must-stay home — absolutely beautiful, peaceful, spacious, and perfect for gathering together. We left feeling incredibly grateful for our experience here.

Convenient parking behind house; nearby areas for walking/nature viewing. The ocean was a short walk from the house with early morning views that were terrific. The house had lots of beds & a good number of bathrooms (all w/ shower/sink/toilet). The kitchen was a little tight when all of our cooks were working (!), but it was supplemented by an extra refrigerator in the garage. We loved the two sitting rooms for spreading out for discussion/reading/needlework.

The House is in a great location!! Very easy to walk to the cliff walk the wiggly bridge, York harbor beach, and a few very nice restaurants. Short sands beach is a very short drive and is great for kids! It ha s a great playground, basketball courts, and a boardwalk with an arcade, restaurants, and shops. The beach there is wonderful!! The house itself is great. Lots of space! The fire pit area outside is very nice but I will say the 9pm quiet rule is a little early when on vacation.10pm would be a little more reasonable but we made it work. The kitchen is very well stocked with everything that you would need. Lance provides you with honestly everything... baby gates, high chairs, board games, yard games, beach towels, beach toys, coolers, wagons, beach chairs etc...He really is a wonderful host! I would rent the Varrel house again without question.

We all had a wonderful vacation at this beautiful house. There was plenty of room for all 18 of us. The house was very clean and decorated nicely. We spent lots of time enjoying the large front porch. The extra fridge was great to have with a large group. We loved the location because so close to the beach and to the fisherman's walk and wiggly bridge which we enjoyed several times. Lance was a great host and gave excellent tips on the area. Highly recommend!

Incredibly beautiful house. It has everything you need for a big gathering to enjoy the beach in Maine! Lance was a wonderful, welcoming, and responsive host. The beach within walking distances is fabulous and even just spending lazy days at the house is super. We can't wait to come back!

This property became available through happenstance. The owner, Lance, has long standing guests who frequently return year after year. Due to this unexpected opportunity we were able to throw a surprise celebration for my partner. It was a glorious stay. Walking distance to the beach, and a local pub. Our interactions with Lance were top notch. In particular, he's very much invested in the community where he rents and takes extra steps to ensure his guests are happy and know how much he respects his neighbors. This was an unique location in York, and we were very thankful for this vacation.

We had family coming from New Zealand, Michigan and Massachusetts to be together. Three generations were there to visit for a week. The house was perfect for this. We could walk to the beach and the garage was filled with toys, chairs and boogie boards. We had family meals in the large dining room and outside. There were plenty of spacious rooms and bathrooms for everyone. The front porch was the gathering spot for coffee and late afternoon chats. Lance gave us all kinds of helpful information and made our stay especially comfortable and fun!!Highly recommend this beautiful home.

The house was perfect for our family of 23, ranging in age from 4 months to 80 years. There were beds for all of us and plenty of space to gather together in the living rooms, dining room and kitchen. We utilized the grill and fire pit in the back yard. It was great to have the beach towels and toys for the kids. Lance was very responsive and quickly resolved a couple requests.

We had a great time at your wonderful home! There was plenty of room for two big families to enjoy the long weekend! All the rooms were spacious and beautifully decorated. We loved relaxing on the front porch with views of the water and there is a great yard with a gas fire pit to enjoy at night. The York Harbor area has so much to do and great walks to enjoy right from the house. Lance was so nice and great to work with and we will definitely be back for another visit!

We booked this house for our wedding weekend, as our venue was at Foster's Clambakes down the street. The whole weekend was very low-key -exactly what we wanted- and we couldn't have asked for better accommodations for ourselves and our closest friends/family who stayed with us. The house is beautifully kept, has nearly everything you need, and Lance is super friendly and responds quickly. Highly recommend!

What a great time was had by 18+ retired nurses in this very accommodating house. So much was provided for us and Lance was always available to answer questions as needed. He even stopped by to make sure all was well! To say this area in Maine is beautiful seems trite as it is more than that with great beaches, stores and restaurants. The Varrell House is certainly a wonderful place to stay. Thanks Lance. Looking forward to more stays.
