Ely, Minnesota
Fred's Cabin is a stand-alone, private home at the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCA), an area dedicated to camping, canoeing, and fishing -- a get-away-from-it-all destination. Fred’s Cabin is owned by Williams and Hall Outfitters.
The 1st-floor master bedroom has a double bed. The upstairs loft (accessed by pine ladder/stair) has 2 twin beds plus one double. The bathroom is on the 1st floor. Towels and bedding are included. The kitchen is fully equipped and there is a charcoal grill outside.
It comes with access to our canoeing waterfront. Additionally, should you wish to enjoy motorboat fishing, we offer a 25% discount on any of our boat and motor rental packages. You also have full access to meals in the Williams and Hall dining room.
The Boundary Waters region is characterized by a vast network of waterways and bogs within a glacially-carved landscape covered in boreal forests. You can canoe into the Boundary Waters from our dock on Moose Lake.
Staff was nice..we didnt spend alot of time at the cabin it did come with free canoe use and dock access.. its older needs could use alittle maintenance but not to bad for a rustic little cabin worked great for our family to basically sleep and shower and we made one meal there.
Staying in Fred’s Cabin was a big departure from what we would typically stay in, but it was exactly what we needed. Temper your expectations. If you’re expecting Wi-Fi, television, consistent cell service, and the finer things in life, this probably isn’t the place for you. If you want to escape all those things and get down to the basics, Fred’s Cabin is pretty ideal. We enjoyed every second of our stay. Even when our water became a bit hit or miss, we made the most of it. If you need cell reception and to fire off a work email, take a quick trip into Ely for a beer and some dinner. The folks at W&H were incredibly friendly and helpful in getting us set up to fish Big Moose Lake and we had a blast. I would have absolutely no problem staying at Fred’s again and hope I am able to someday. FYI, take full advantage of the screened in porch. It’s a lifesaver at night.
Stayed with my husband and 3 kiddos ages 3-8 for a week. The cabin was cute, nice location, the folks at the outfitter were friendly and helpful. We enjoyed it so much there are talks on returning next year.
Clean comfortable cabin. Very friendly and helpful hosts. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We will visit again for sure.

This was a great getaway for a day excursion into the boundary waters.
The cabin was really nice and met our needs for the stay.
The cabin had all we needed, the staff was terrific! They took so much time with us, being new to this area. We had such a good time!! Day paddles, hikes, fishing, all sorts of adventures. Thanks so much, Williams and Hall!
We had a great time. The outfitter was very helpful and friendly.
Great place to stay (cabin and bunkhouses at the outfitter). Super nice and accommodating hosts. Family run and they make you feel like part of the family. Gorgeous scenery too!
