El Prado, New Mexico
Angel House is located on a quiet, paved road, with easy access midway between the Town of Taos and the Taos Ski Valley, about a 10-15 minute drive to either one. It's one bedroom with separate loft, one beautiful bath, and amazing views. If you are wondering whether it is possible to live lightly on the earth without giving up modern comfort and convenience, stay at this bright, beautiful, custom built, green home.
Angel House is a classic northern New Mexican territorial home, with metal roof, post and beam construction, interior adobe walls and thick plaster exterior walls with straw bale infill. It's sunny and bright, with wonderful details: flagstone bancos surrounding a beautiful kiva fireplace; exquisite tile work in the bath; hand plastered walls with bits of straw and mica gleaming from the depths. The house maximizes New Mexico’s abundant sunshine to effectively heat and cool the house – this is called passive solar design – with conventional systems providing backup.
The kitchen is one of a kind: granite tile counter tops are inlaid with turquoise, and a genuine cast iron British cooker in chile-pepper-red. It’s fully equipped with everything from wineglasses to coffeemaker to microwave.
The second story loft provides two "away" areas. The west side offers a rocker and comfortable overstuffed chaise for reading, a desk to set up your laptop (high speed WiFi), and a view of the amazing Taos sunsets. Cross the second story bridge to the east side to practice yoga as the sun rises over the sacred Taos Mountain, or just stretch out on the couch and watch TV or DVDs.
Angel House is "L" shaped and wraps snugly around a covered flagstone portal (porch) furnished with table, chairs, and gas grill for outdoor dining and relaxation. A pair of Taos blue Adirondack chairs let you bask in the New Mexico sunshine, while grown pinon and juniper trees give the patio area a feeling of peace and privacy.
Angel House is an ideal spot for a couple looking for a beautiful, romantic getaway as well as for two traveling companions who prefer separate sleeping areas (at least one guest must be an adult 25 or older). The bedroom has a queen bed with a view of Taos Mountain, a private entrance to the covered portal, and its own entrance to the dual-sink bath with whimsically tiled shower. The sofa upstairs pulls into a full-size bed, and the bath has a second door that opens to the hallway.
And YES, it’s green and sustainable
At Angel House you will experience true sustainable building that is also beautiful, gracious, welcoming, and comfortable. Angel House has all the amenities you are used to, but at a fraction of the carbon footprint. Our environmentally sustainable systems are explained throughout the house, and you can learn first-hand how this home keeps its occupants and the earth happy. You might leave with some great ideas to make your own home a little greener.
So… why is it called Angel House
We think that angels watch over the house and linger there, especially when they need a little vacation from their duties. They feel at home, because the house and its peaceful environment is as close to heaven on earth that you will find.
Notes:
Guests will have the house to themselves, including the patio and private outdoor seating area. There are several locked rooms and cupboards in the house that are the owners' private space, and guests are not permitted to try to open these.
We ask guests to park on the upper level, near the house, leaving the lower part of the driveway (near the detached garage) clear for any potential studio guests. Please do not enter their outdoor space behind the tall privacy fence.
There is a separate studio rental, called Angels’ Retreat (VRBO #1271458), on the same 5-acre property. The two rentals remain fully private from each other: they are in separate buildings that are further apart than houses in most suburban subdivisions, with a split driveway and separate parking. A tall privacy fence separates the two spaces, and each has private outdoor seating areas. The windows have been carefully positioned to take advantage of the trees and slope of the land so that the two spaces remain visually private. It is possible to rent both Angel House and Angels’ Retreat together, as schedules permit.

The home was absolutely perfect for a relaxing weekend vacation - the floor plan is very spacious and layout allows for together time as well as quiet time apart. Mountain views make looking out the windows or sitting on the patio incredible.
We came to get away and relax and that is exactly what we were able to do. This is the perfect place to just sit and take in the scenery. We lived on the porch just enjoying the mountains and fresh air. The house had everything we needed to make meals also. Communication was excellent too. We will be coming back to stay in the future.
We could not stay in the kitchen to prepare any meals way to hot and sitting in the living room was very hot even with the fans running . I feel this house is better suited for winter rental . Nice house well equipped pretty location and quiet.
Very classy and well kept property. The views out from the property make you think you are the only ones for miles around. Still close enough to enjoy the surrounding attractions but easy to escape back to your own private world. The English stove was a little intimidating so we cooked using the toaster oven instead.
The property is very clean, well maintained and great layout. The house was fully accommodating. The stove is the only draw back. Although it is super unique and great for ambient heating of the house, not so good for cooking on a vacation timeline. It is a novelty. The property was designed for low ecological impact. Although it’s awesome, guests do have to keep this in mind. Overall, a great find and I’d definitely stay again.
Our second time staying at this property. It is very clean, quiet, and comfortable. We really appreciate the non-toxic products used for laundry and cleaning. I can't tolerate perfumes and chemicals and there was no problem here. Thank you!
Great property for my visit to Taos. Everything went very smoothly and location was great for skiing and visiting town.
Beautiful property, inside and out. Fantastic views. convenient to both TSV and the town of Taos. Loved my stay here and hope to do so again.
We stayed nearly a week in this very interesting home while in Taos for our Annual trip to attend Michael Hearne's Big Barn Dance music Festival. Very Clean, great amenities. It is not real close to Taos Plaza and the Festival but if you is a great place to base out of if you are travelling in Northern NM, Questa, Red River, Taos, Rio Grande Gorge, Taos Pueblo, and many other attractions are close. The views are fantastic.
The Angel house was fantastic! The views were incredible and everything we needed was provided. We really enjoyed our stay and exploring the surrounding Taos area.
What a lovely home! We like staying a bit outside of town when we travel, preferring the quiet. This was perfect, requiring the shortest of drives to get into Taos, as well as being centrally located for our side trips to other areas. Being right off the street, a slight concern existed, but it truly never disturbed us, seldom even being heard. Traffic is light, and the owners have everything glorious situated in such a way that no visual occurs. I'm a princess requiring beds, and theirs was perfect! The patio captured me every morning and early evening. What a lovely view...inspirational to my soul. I enjoyed the morning visits of the hummingbirds, too, and the evening visits of the rabbits while I sipped my wine. We arrived in a heat wave, which had us concerned since there wasn't AC, but the owners were prepared. Upon arrival, the home was cool due to an evaporative cooler in place, along with directions that truly kept the place comfortable. Remember, I'm a princess. ;o) We hope to be back again someday!
The pictures do not do this home justice. This home was the perfect place to disconnect and take in the mountains and mesa views both outside and inside the home. We have been traveling to this area for 30 years and this has been our favorite home. We look forward to staying in this amazing home again.
