Scotland, Maryland
Modest and cozy, this one-bedroom, one-bath cottage is a sweet reminder of the classic love song of summer.
Culag translates to ‘wee one back behind’ from Scottish Gaelic. The heart of this natural beauty lies in its serene allure, allowing you to focus on the tranquility of the Chesapeake without interruption. Spend your getaway soaking your feet in the Bay as you wade with Maryland’s native blue crabs swimming along the Bay, then relax on the reclining outdoor Adirondack chairs afterwards in the warm evening. A surrounding greenery of lush, manicured yards and towering trees gives you the added embrace of nature to your vacation, all while the salted shoreline is a just short walk away down the road.
An untouched wonder, Culag is a comfortable retreat for those looking for meditation and relaxation in a rustic, remote setting. The cottage offers a number of amenities, including a full, complete kitchen, an outdoor grill on the private deck, a queen bed, and a washer and dryer for your ease. With coffee in hand, you can bask in the sun all while enjoying the air conditioning from within the extended sunroom, or meditate in the salted air on the front patio deck that overlooks the flowered garden.
For your stay, we’ve included two bicycles that are provided year-round, and two kayaks that are available from late spring to early fall only, for your safety.
It was near the waterfront and it was very quiet and peaceful. The price was comparable to a hotel room but much roomier, and with a full kitchen. It was very clean. The only item we could have used that was not there was a manual can opener. Lovely place! Lovely stay. Thank you.
Location is wonderful. Greeted by an overwhelming smell of ant spray and ants in the kitchen and living area. Lock stopped working and it took over an hour to get someone on site to assist. That person did not Bring a key and had to “break into” the house to Put new batteries in the lock. Responders shared they they can break into many of the properties of this host. We left early since we did not know people who “broke into” the home to fix the lock. I tried to get someone to call me to discuss concerns. Nobody called me.
The property was nice, just the right size for 2 people, a dishwasher would be nice. It was quiet, all the flatware, pots were ok.
Such a cute little cottage, perfect for a weekend get away! We stayed here because we were attending a wedding in the area and I’d definitely stay here again!
My wife and I, along with our doggo, spent 3 nights at Culag and it was everything we were looking for. We both work 40+ hrs weekly and haven't taken a break in a while, and this cozy little out-of-the-way house was a perfect escape from everything. Two bikes and kayaks were available for use (though we unfortunately only utilized the bikes due to the water currents [we're novice kayakers]), kitchen fully stocked with cooking utensils, bathroom fully stocked with towels and all toiletries, smart TV and WiFi, perfect all-around! Great for a single couple (1 bed in bedroom) or 1-2 kids (pullout loveseat bed in living area). Owner was very quick to respond to messages, both before we arrived and while at the house, really couldn't recommend more! Only negative is personal preference, the bed was just too firm, as we both prefer softer beds. Finally, as with any out-of-the-way properties, make sure you're prepared to lose cell service! I stupidly forgot and had to drive back to the main road to gather the entrance credentials as I had no service, totally my fault for not being prepared. We'd definitely love to return in the future!
Beautiful, quaint location. Quiet and secluded, just what we needed! Perfect size for the two of us.
Host had great communication and was very helpful. Nice cozy little place in near point lookout.
Perfect spot. So perfect this was our second visit.
We love St Mary’s County but have never stayed at the southern tip. It was beautiful. What a surprise to see sunrise on the Chesapeake Bay right from the porch! Culag was perfect. It is tiny but has everything you need. There is a queen bed in the single bedroom. We normally like a king…a king might fit, but the quality of the mattress was perfect. Nice and firm and it gave us a comfortable night’s sleep. The main living space is a living room/kitchen combination. The loveseat is a twin pullout bed as well and the side chair and ottoman are substantial. We found the rolling kitchen cart unnecessary and taking up space so we easily moved it into the ample bedroom closet during our stay. The bathroom adjoins the bedroom and is roomy and includes a washer and dryer in the interior closet located in the bathroom. The sunroom gives more sitting space including a small dining space. I’d want to flip the chairs if possible to face the windows but it may not be possible to fit with the entry door swing, but that’s a minor suggestion. The kitchen is nicely equipped including a grinder for coffee beans—wish I had brought some! The porch offers even more seating to enjoy what is most spectacular, the location. The beach is a bit of a walk back towards the main road that takes you to the property but worth it. What a view and tiny slice of heaven. There is not a lot of restaurant selection south of Lexington Park. We ate at Hacienda Los Guayabos Mexican Grill one night and Pier 450 for Sunday brunch. The Mexican Grill had a good selection, great service and was a bargain especially noting that the kitchen is open after 9pm. Pier 450 was excellent! We would come back to the area just for that. Again, location, location, not to mention a wonderful chef and menu. I wanted one of everything! I know where to stay next time I’m in southern Maryland!
Overall we had a great stay! The property is very quiet with lots of space for pups to explore. My husband and I enjoyed the deck and grill every night. The private beach nearby is awesome, but was a little farther of a walk than expected. We went almost every day and were alone each time! The house was also great (the perfect size for two people). Wifi was perfect! We did have trouble with ants and spiders in the house. There were spiderwebs and dusty areas as well. All were manageable, but we wished we had brought a bottle of all-purpose cleaning spray or found some bug spray. Overall, we loved our stay and would recommend to anyone wanting a quiet little spot with a short walk to a quiet beach. Our pups loved it too!
it was a perfect size house for me and my spouse. it was an amazing experience! definitely recommend staying here!
This cottage was in a very friendly neighborhood. We felt like we had a private beach although it was close to a quarter mile walk. Bay views were limited as the front porch was unusable due to overgrowth of shrubbery and disrepair of porch boards. Upon arrival, the cottage had hair remains of previous pets with fur on bathroom walls. Also ceiling corners had cobwebs, and there was a hole in the kitchen cieling. Garden was so overgrown with weeds, my wife ended up weeding the garden and were pleasantly surprised to find flowers growing. With all of this, we had a wonderful vacation.
We had a great stay. Clean, neat. Everything we expected! We knew that it was secluded, but I want to make sure that whoever is coming, make sure you plan what you want to eat TOTALLY, and bring it with you. No ice cream stores, no grocery stores..all 20-25 minutes away, one way. Same with any restaurants. Great time.
The property is just as advertised - small but with everything we needed for our short visit. Met our main criteria which is that we can bring our dog along with us. Not many options for food in the area so next time we will bring more groceries but other than that we thoroughly enjoyed the stay. Quiet and peaceful with views of the Chesapeake and a short walk or bike ride to the private beach area. The bed is very comfortable and there is plenty of hot water with good water pressure in the shower. Kitchen has all the dishes and cooking utensils we needed. We enjoyed our stay.
