San Francisco, California
Permit/Tax I.D. - STR-0001508
Our property was built in 1914 with bricks salvaged from the 1906 Earthquake. Robert Hutchinson purchased the building in 1960. Mr. Hutchinson lived in the building for almost 50 years until his passing in 2008. Mr. Hutchinson was a prominent San Francisco designer whose work was featured in Architectural Digest. He lived upstairs and had his design studio downstairs. Mr. Hutchinson used the private and public spaces in the building to experiment with architectural and design concepts. The walls of the loft have been lacquered red, flat black, and adobe.
Many of Mr. Hutchinson's most dynamic pieces remain in the home, such as the burl redwood dining table (1978), the petrified wood table, (1981). The facade was also created by Mr. Hutchinson in 1977 and is unique to San Francisco. He believed in working carefully with craftsmen to create interiors that were conceptual and stupendous.
The entire building underwent a complete renovation/remodel/earthquake retrofit, from the basement to roof in 2009. The loft has a private entrance on Sutter Street and a private garage entrance behind the building. (There are 24 steps to reach the loft from Sutter and 13 steps from the garage.)
As you enter the loft from Sutter there is the great room, which is comprised of a spacious living /dining area. The guest bedroom/bathroom is located in the front of the house as well. The kitchen has been completely remodeled and is fit for a chef.
The main bedroom suite is located in the back of the loft and overlooks the roof garden. Many elements in the suite were designed by Mr. Hutchinson. Mr. Hutchinson designed the fireplace, the couches, the cantilevered shelves, and the vanity in the bathroom.
Off the bedroom is a breezeway with a door to a private 1,000 square ft. deck. The deck is a true urban oasis, overflowing with bamboo and orchids. There is a teak outdoor table for six and several seating areas.
There are hardwood floors throughout, exposed brick walls, and massive steel columns. The loft is 2000 square feet has a private 1,000 square foot deck. Of course, there's great wifi and a washer/dryer. There is a private garage, entered on Fern Street, that is included with your reservation.
Walking is the only way to explore a new city. The loft is centrally located in Lower Nob Hill, with easy walking distance to Russian Hill, Union Square, Ghirardelli Square, Chinatown, Pacific Heights, and Civic Center. Amazing restaurants, shops, and high-end groceries are close by as well. The California Street Cable Car is only three blocks away. The California Cable Car takes you to Grace Catherdral, Chinatown, downtown with a final stop at the Ferry Building.
Although the loft is in the center of town it is peaceful and private. The loft has a relaxed San Francisco-New York loft aesthetic. Glorious bay breezes preclude the need for air conditioning. We have been listed on VRBO for over a decade and our reviews are outstanding. My partner Steve or I will show you around the place upon your arrival.
We hope to see you soon.
Cheers,
Rob & Steve

Great location (near plenty of restaurants, easy access to other parts of the city); spacious and well-appointed apartment; attentive and responsive host. Enjoyed my stay!
Spacious living quarters, well equipped kitchen and within walking distance to area restaurants and other retail.
Lovely, clean, stylish yet comfortable and feels completely safe and secure. Gorgeous rooftop garden and a garage to keep a vehicle is priceless. Phenomenal place in SF. This home made our trip even more special. Bonus, Steve is a sweetheart and responsive.
Beautiful memorable and unique property in a good location to explore San Francisco. Outdoor space a real bonus. Good communication with host. Would stay again.
Lovely property & lovely owner. Beautifully decorated and spacious.
Nice apartment. Host was awesome. Place was clean and met our needs. Would go back.
Nice safe location and peaceful loft. Owner was responsive and communicative.
Lovely spacious property with beautiful outdoor space.
Very nice property with great furnishings and comfortable beds.
We really enjoyed staying at the loft. It was comfortable and wonderfully designed with a beautiful outdoor area. It was convenient for us to walk to Union Square, Fisherman's Warf, and North Beach. It was great to have a garage to park our car in and we felt safe walking. Steve and Mike responded very quickly to our questions. We would stay here again and could not expect anything more.
We selected this loft not only for the amount of space but for the walkability to a few activities we wanted to do. The space is exactly as represented in the VRBO listing and the hosts were agreeable and easy to work with. However, the loft is located in an area known as Lower Nob Hill/Tenderloin which had a lot of homeless people in the area at all hours of the day and night. We understand that homeless people are a social issue for most cities, unfortunately this area however had more than it's share as compared to the other areas we walked through. Luckily it is on the border of Japantown and Pacific Heights which we felt much more comfortable walking in. We just had to be mindful of the routes we would take as we traveled around town. Having the garage was invaluable since we wanted to up to Napa and Muir Woods.
This condo is so special and truly unique! We loved it! It felt like we were staying in an art gallery. Steve was wonderful and met us there for check-in. It was spotless and very comfortable. The outdoor space is a dream and so very relaxing! And it is close or a quick cab/Uber ride to everything. We live in quiet, rural western Kentucky, so it took a minute to get used to the bustling sounds of the city at night. But we loved it and would definitely stay again.
The property was excellent all amenities easy to use. The loft itself was unique. Easily excess-able both by the front and using the garage. We loved staying here. Unspoken some chicken wings as well yeah not chicken tenders yeah and chicken wings chicken tenders Mac should’ve been around
We had an excellent time during our stay. Steve met us for check-in and explained the property and the area. The location was perfect and we felt very safe and secure during our time there. The property is really unique and fun and we enjoyed getting the opportunity to stay there.
This apartment is beautiful and absolutely one of a kind. There is tons of space. The beds are super comfortable. The kitchen is wonderfully equipped, and the outdoor space is an oasis in the middle of the city. The immediate neighborhood doesn’t have much going on, though you will find the necessities. It is quite centrally located though, making it a great homebase.
We had a great time! Easy to walk to anything you want to see in the city. Close to great restaurants and hosts were amazing. They have many amazing recommendations for things to do and restaurants.
Can’t say enough about this property and the hosts. Communication was excellent and a personal tour upon arrival. Clean, comfortable and above all funky! Such a cool place and the roof garden to hang out in is not to be missed. Location great and a good base for anything in the city. Will definitely come back next time in town!
