Trenton, New Jersey
This is a wonderful grand turn-of-the century home, with plenty of original fixtures: butler's pantry, pocket doors, marble fireplace, and wooden floors, just to mention a few. The house is conveniently located in prestigious historic Berkeley Square, in Trenton, New Jersey (one hour from NYC; 30 minutes from Philadelphia; 15 minutes from Princeton, NJ). The district is an architecturally intact residential area located along the Delaware River in West Trenton. The neighborhood is very quiet and made up of beautiful late-Victorian, Queen Anne, Italian Villa, and Romanesque grand homes.
The house has 7 bedrooms, 4 of them available for groups of 8 or smaller. The other bedrooms might available for larger groups. The house is always rented entirely, not shared with other groups.

Overall, we were very happy with our stay at this property and grateful we found an affordable place that could accommodate our group of 7 adults and 2 children. We had plenty of space, ample parking for 3 cars (between the driveway and the street) and we were comfortable. The neighborhood isn’t the best, but, we didn’t feel unsafe. Hooks or towel bars in the bathrooms would be helpful. One more bathroom, especially on the first floor, would have been nice, but, we knew the layout from the description when we booked it.
We have family in a Trenton suburb that we wanted to be able to visit and have a common place to play games and hang out together and this was a perfect place for that. Its spaciousness with high ceilings and large formal dining room were perfect for this. As others have noted, a downside is no main floor bathroom or bedroom so this would not be a good house if some in your party aren’t able to climb stairs. (Which wasn’t our issue) There was plenty of hot water for showers. The refrigerator isn’t hooked to a water line so grabbing some bagged ice makes up for no ice maker.
Our host was very kind when I reached out to her and was able to help when we could not originally get into the house. This house has a lot of old character as highlighted in the description and there are a lot of rooms and beds to accommodate a big party if that’s what you are looking for. Unfortunately, there was a big ant problem in the kitchen so you couldn’t leave anything on the counters without them crawling all over the counter/ sink. We also could not use the master bathroom shower because the water would not get warm. We tried multiple times and were forced to all share the one other bathroom on the second floor which also was difficult to have the water regulate and get to a reasonable temperature for a bath or shower. The house’s old character does not offer much up to date inside. It is difficult for an older person to stay here because there is no bathroom on the main floor so a younger population would be better suited here. The neighborhood did not feel safe at all and there were neighbors outside arguing when we arrived. The rules inside the house recommended always keeping the doors locked and I have never stayed in any other houses on vacation where that has been highlighted so we were very nervous in this house about safety. It must have been this particular city because most everything around was in the same shape and had the same type of feel. We found a few extra pillows but I recommend bringing your own pillows and extra blankets/ towels to stay.
Comfortable and roomy 19th century home.
Everything was absolutely amazing! We loved seeing all the history in the house and discussing how the house would’ve been back in the day! Lead us to looking online at history of Trenton itself. Everything was super clean and easy to find pots and pans and such. Our only complaint is, we didn’t get enough time in the beautiful house! Definitely will stay again for our next conference!
My wife and I along with our son and daughter-in-law and their two youngsters spent several days at this neat place in Trenton. The building is pretty old, including a short-cut stairway from the kitchen to the bedrooms upstairs that I imagine was originally for servants. In addition to this historic character, the building has been fully modernized with 3 prong electric outlets, good plumbing all around, and window air conditioners that worked fine in late summer humid weather. It has radiators for cold weather. The kitchen is well stocked with condiments, other basics, pots and pans, and all sorts of utensils. The residential neighborhood was quiet. We particularly appreciated the owner's quick assistance with our several questions, like where to find extra garbage bags and even a prompt visit to demonstrate the push to start button on the drier. All the appliances are new or recent, including the front loading washer, a big refrigerator, and the smooth top stove.
Lovely home. Such fun staying there. Home had everything we needed. Convenient location to our trips into Bucks Co PA. Didn’t get to to explore local area but hopefully can another time. Area neighborhood has some beautiful homes. So nice to see them being restored.
