Stayed Jan 6, 2026We loved this little get away in San Ignacio! Our favorite part was the land and back deck that looked out over the mountains. Rocky helped to get us settled and was very kind. It was nice knowing there was a local who lived nearby that could help us if needed! We will definitely be back!

Stayed Nov 20, 2025My short stay in the Belize Gem Casita was wonderful. Roque and Angela (the next door neighbors and property managers) were communicative and kind, and they checked in with me every evening to ensure I'd enjoyed my day and didn't need anything. The property is as lovely as the photos, and everything was as described and operational, including the A/C in the main living space and the wifi. I did try to use the TV one night, and it turns on fine, but I couldn't figure out how to cast to it (I have the Miracast app, but my phone and the TV couldn't seem to find each other), so I gave up and read a book and enjoyed some quiet time. It is a little bit out of town (about 20 minutes walking) and up quite a steep hill, so heed their advice on having a 4WD/AWD vehicle to get there if driving. If you do any tours (I did two through Mayawalk) that include transport, they will likely pick you up at the bottom of the hill at the nearest paved intersection about 10 minutes walking away from the cabin, so pad your meeting time with that knowledge. If you're looking for some peace and quiet and don't mind the bit of distance from San Ignacio proper, I highly recommend this property!

Stayed Jan 22, 2020We absolutely loved our stay here. A little off the beaten path, which is how we like it. Tons of wildlife and domestic animals around, there was a litter of neighbor kittens maybe 12-14 weeks old that came and visited us every morning and evening, they were so cute and we were in heaven! Sheep grazing next door, wild parrots passing by, a few friendly dogs in the neighborhood. Can you tell we love animals? The view from the veranda is unreal, be sure to wake up early enough to see the sunrise! Yes the hill to get up to the property can be challenging and it’s not really possible to walk anywhere because of this. You need a 4WD vehicle. We were fine with this and the rough terrain only increases your privacy. We did 2 Mayan ruin tours with Mayawalk Tours which we highly recommend. There is a grocery store at the bottom of the hill that has everything you could need and a few great restaurants very close by. Be sure to check out the BRAND NEW Cafe Chile, you’ll pass right by it on your way to the casita, you can’t miss it. It just had its grand opening the week before we arrived. A little pricey by San Ignacio standards but wonderful ambiance, service, and GREAT food. Marilyn was wonderful checking is in and was readily available the whole time we were there but we got along great on our own. Don’t hesitate to book!

Stayed Jan 19, 2020The four of us enjoyed staying here and it was perfect for our needs. Some of us didn’t sleep well on the mattresses because they moved too much when one person rolled around to wake the other person-Maybe foam mattresses would have been better. One night there were dogs barking in the neighborhood most of the night, including one small dog right outside the house. The other two nights I didn’t bother us much. The only other problem is that the water was off for one day and one night but I heard that the water was off in that part of the city so I could not have been avoided.

Stayed Dec 23, 2019This property was exactly what we were looking for - reasonably priced, quiet and close to town. It was big enough to easily sleep our party of four, the A/C worked very quickly and we enjoyed the sunrises on the veranda. The road to get to the property definitely requires 4WD and might be a bit daunting for some.

Stayed Dec 31, 1969Belize Gem is great place to explore the Cayo region. Don't expect too much luxury, but everything you need is there. You will need a 4x4, as the road towards the house is, like most roads in the region, quite rough. Make sure to visit Bartons Creek Cave with David, you will find his 'office' next to the market place.

Stayed Apr 14, 2019This is an amazing jungle house! We stayed here for two nights and really enjoyed the quiet location, scenic grounds and lovely house. Our three boys slept in the upstairs loft room (three twin beds). We (the parents) took one of the bedrooms downstairs. It was a good size for a family of five. It would have been very crowded with seven people. As the description says, the road requires a car with good clearance. We had a Jeep Patriot which was not AWD. The roads were dry and the Jeep had good clearance, so we made it up the hills just fine. The road is dirt with numerous random ruts that are 6-8 inches deep. A small car like a Honda Civic will bottom out. The hills are steep. If the roads were muddy, then I doubt the Jeep would have made it to the house. In the dry season, we were lucky. The clearance under the car is critical! We LOVED staying here! It was a charming place to stay. The kitchen is well stocked (they even had a cheese grater, so we made nachos). The freezer is great for freezing water bottles the night before a hot hike. The air conditioner works well to cool the house (it was over 100 while we were there, so the AC was lovely!). We had a great time visiting the Iguana Conservation Project (you can hold and feed the iguanas). This takes about 45-60 minutes. The Hotel has amazing desserts, worth a stop! Our favorite adventure was visiting Che Chem Ha Cave - they have a facebook page - and it was a private guided tour of an ancient Mayan cave. Excellent!!! Charge is about $25 per person, provide your own transportation. Arrange a tour ahead of time. We hiked about 45 minutes through the jungle each way to get to the cave and then we spent about an hour inside the cave with the guide and got to see Mayan pottery. Fantastic experience! If you want to use the washing machine while you are there, ask for instructions from Marilyn before using it. It is different from American washers! The clothesline was great, we dried swim suits overnight. We bought a Belize Map chip for our Garmin and used GPS to find places. I found it was easier than anything cell phone related, the cell phones don't always have reception in Belize! Summary: We loved San Ignacio! We really enjoyed our time at the house. We had fun seeing Mayan ruins and caves and iguanas.
