Shopping/supplies: The village of Croghan is 7 miles away and offers a Nice n Easy Grocery Shoppe that has food, camping supplies, gas, propane, souvenirs, etc. There is also Monnats IGA, a full line grocery store. The Croghan Meat Market is famous for Croghan Bologna and also offers great steaks, lobster tails, etc. Vinny's Pizza is on Main Street as well as Schultz's Restaurant. Good ol' Wishy's is a local legend, a real old fashioned ice cream parlor. The Beaver River flows through town and at one time powered the Croghan Island Mill which is still an operating lumber mill. There's a nice park in town with a playground, tennis court, ball diamonds, etc. Croghan is famous for Maple Syrup and is home of the American Maple Museum on Main Street. The Northern New York Railroad Museum is also on Main Street as is Stumps Laundramat, a Liquor Store, and Video Rental, Monnat - Nortz Mobil is a full service gas station on Main Street. Buckingham Hardware on Main is also an Outdoor Sports Store.
Effley Falls Reservoir: Effley Falls Reservoir is part of the Beaver River Canoe Route. The Beaver River flows into the east end of the lake. We sometimes beach the boats there and slide down the waterfalls, or venture upstream to explore the river and the surrounding remote forest. The lake has some great beaches and coves to explore. Most of the shoreline is undeveloped. We love the peace and quiet, even on holiday weekends, There are no public boat launches on the lake so access is restricted to those who own property, or those who canoe or kayak the Beaver River Canoe Route. Aside from our own private beach, there are three other really nice sandy beaches, one on the east end accessible only by water, one on the west end, and our favorite is on the North Shore which is also only accessible by water.
The Property: Our Lodge was newly constructed in 2006. All furniture and fixtures were purchased new, and expressly to provide a comfortable and relaxing environment. Our property is over 7 acres in size, and bordered by water on two sides. Our beach and dock area is great for swimming, fishing, boating, digging in the sand, or just relaxing. We also have marked hiking trails along the water's edge, and also a trail to the highest point of a ridge on the property that offers a long range view across the lake and forests beyond, We have a great outdoor fire-pit overlooking the lake and plenty of firewood on hand. Most of the property is wooded, but there are two nicely maintained lawns, one behind the lodge, and one overlooking the beach. Play ball, or just relax in a lawn chair. Our huge front porch has mahogany flooring and overlooks the lake. It's a great shady and cool spot to relax on a hot summer's day. Included are two fishing boats with new outboard motors (we supply the gas), a 17 foot canoe, a 14 foot kayak and two ten foot kayaks.
We really enjoyed our stay here. The property is very large and there is quite a bit of privacy as it is quite far from any main road. The scenery was beautiful. It was great having two motorized fishing boats. The fishing was very so-so. We caught mostly pickerel and some smaller sized smallmouth bass but it was a bit slow and we would often go many hours in between bites. Gary was fantastic. He showed us around the property and was very easy to communicate with throughout the trip. The Wifi was very slow but I’m sure for most that is not a priority when on vacation in the mountains.
The stillness and beauty of this property are stunning. Gary does a great job making sure your needs are met.
The weather was prefect! The float Gary provided brought a lot of laughs and fun in the water for all ages. The sand was prefect for our youngest granddaughter.
This is a gem of a place. The lake itself is formed from two dams on the river, so it's quite large and has interesting areas to navigate to. Fun walks for kids along the areas near the dam. The fishing is so-so, but the house is very well set up with all the right gear so we had a really enjoyable time. The owner was having quite a few beers when we checked in and drinking and driving which was a bit of a concern, but other than that was very responsive and easy to work with. The Amish country store near the town of Croghan is perfect for produce in the summer. The Maple museum in Croghan is interesting and the ice-cream shoppe is delightful. Recommend for families with small children.
If you are looking for an authentic Adirondack lodge experience then Big Bear Lodge is the perfect choice. The lodge is very private and has a beautiful view of the lake. We used the boats everyday for great fishing and wonderful sightseeing. We also enjoyed a quiet paddle in the canoe. Gary provides everything you need for a wonderful stay. Our trip was like a throw back in time but with all of the modern conveniences. We look forward to another stay very soon.
We had a very relaxing visit. Good fishing, saw deer every night, camp fires and laughing for hours! Cabin very clean and beds comfy. Would return.
Had a big group of guys on our annual hunting trip to New York, this place worked great for our group. Cabin is nice, scenery is beautiful! Gary went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed while we were there. He made us feel right at home.
We loved the quiet, having fires, sitting in the porch and best of all kayaking in the beautiful lake.
My family had a wonderful time at Big Bear Lodge! Gary was helpful every step of the way and was a very pleasant host. The property was just what the family enjoys; a beautiful lake, fishing, boating, and a serene atmosphere!
This property was amazing. Fishing was great. Quiet and magnificent for unplugging.
Big Bear Lodge was all we envisioned. The entire family had a wonderful week of fishing, water activity and relaxing. The lodge is exceptionally clean, spacious and full of amenities. We hope to enjoy a return visit in the future.
Super easy. Super relaxing.
We had a wonderful weekend at Big Bear Lodge! The weather was perfect and wished we had more time there to explore everything the property had to offer! We spent most of our time out on the water in fishing boats and kayaks and cooling off in the game room. Highly recommend!
