Picture this: morning fog drifting over two private mountain acres, elk grazing somewhere past the tree line, and nothing on the agenda but the crackle of your fire pit. By dusk, the kids are three games deep in the arcade while you soak under a sky full of stars in the six-person hot tub. This is The Elk Lodge — six bedrooms, five and a half baths, and long-range Blue Ridge views, built for a family who wants the whole mountain to themselves.

ABOUT THIS SPACE

The Elk Lodge sits atop a private, two-acre mountain lot outside Banner Elk, North Carolina, with long-range Blue Ridge views and a stone walkway winding from the fire pit up to the wraparound porch. Between the main house and the private two-bedroom guest house above the garage, you're working with six bedrooms and five and a half bathrooms — room for three generations to spread out.

The great room centers on a stacked-stone fireplace beneath a vaulted, wood-beamed ceiling, with leather sofas and a cowhide rug pulled close to the fire. The chef's kitchen carries a Wolf gas range, custom refrigerator, dishwasher, and a full coffee bar. The dining table seats ten, and the adjoining sunroom catches morning light through wraparound windows framing the mountains.

Sleeping arrangements: the main-level bedroom has a king bed, while the upstairs primary suite pairs a king bed with an en suite featuring a soaking tub and slate walk-in shower. Two more bedrooms — twin-over-twin bunks, and a twin-over-full bunk — plus a loft handle the kids. The finished basement adds a second TV lounge, two more bedrooms, a full bath, and laundry.

Above the garage, the private guest house has its own full kitchen, laundry, a queen bedroom with en suite, a twin room with en suite, and a queen pull-out sofa — ideal for a second family who wants their own door.

What used to be a three-car garage is now a fully heated and cooled game room with a 70-inch Smart TV, leather couches, a newly felted pool table, shuffleboard, a poker table, ping pong, and classic Pac-Man and Galaga arcade cabinets, plus a half bath.

Outside, the six-person hot tub sits on the back stone patio with mountain views, and the ten-seat fire pit at the base of the walkway — ringed in Adirondack chairs — is where most nights end. A gas grill and covered outdoor dining table round out the deck, and the full two acres give everyone room to roam.

WHO THIS HOME IS BEST FOR

Multi-generational families who want everyone under one roof but still want their own space — grandparents in the guest house, teens in the basement, parents upstairs. Ski trip crews chasing two mountains within 20 minutes of the front door. Groups of friends who measure a good weekend by how many games of pool, shuffleboard, and poker got played in the game room. Anglers who want to be minutes from the Elk River at first light. And anyone dreaming of waking up to fog rolling over a private mountain ridge with a cup of coffee in hand.

THINGS MOM NEEDS TO KNOW:

The guest house gives a second family or the grandparents their own kitchen, laundry, queen bedroom, twin room and pull-out, so two families can share the trip without sharing a bathroom. The garage game room has a 400-game console that will keep the kids busy for hours. The hot tub is the grown-ups' spot. You're in bear country, so trash goes in the bear-proof bins; the kids will think that's the coolest part of the trip. Six cars fit. Bring 4WD or chains in winter.

PARKING

Free parking is available on-site for multiple vehicles along the driveway and around the two-acre property, so ski racks, trucks, and trailers are never an issue. In winter, the driveway sits at elevation, so four-wheel drive or tire chains are required whenever snow or ice is forecast — flatlander sedans should plan accordingly.

HOUSE RULES

Please treat The Elk Lodge like your own home. No smoking inside or on the decks/patios — violations carry a $750 ozone-treatment fee. No pets. A $750 fee will be charged if you bring a pet. Check-in is after 4:00 PM, checkout before 10:00 AM; late checkouts are billed at $100 per 25-minute increment. The hot tub is 18+ only — shower beforehand, skip the glassware, avoid sunscreen or lotions before entering, and cover it when done ($250 fee if it must be drained and cleaned due to misuse). No lifeguard is on duty. Exterior cameras cover the grounds, and wildlife, including elk, may wander through — please use caution outdoors.

We had an amazing experience here! The house was fully equipped with everything you might need during your stay. The property is beautiful and very well maintained. The amenities were great and kept our group of 10 (varying age groups) entertained the whole weekend. The host was very responsive and went above and beyond to ensure we were taken care of. We would 100% stay there again!

We had such a wonderful time at The Elk Lodge during our 8 day stay. It was the 'perfect formula' for us, our adult children and young grandchildren, (ages 4-9).Located at the top of a mountain, the description given was very accurate. I just can't say enough about the hosts! They deserve an A in hospitality, design, decor, and a very well kept home, grounds, and responded immediately to any concerns, which were minimal and quickly resolved. Even though the home was located in a neighborhood, it was well secluded with plenty of space and privacy. We felt very safe, and enjoyed walks around the neighborhood. One of our favorite perks was the large, mowed field out back. Our grandchildren had plenty of open space to run and play, a rare find on top of a mountain. We watched wild turkey, deer, bunnies, hummingbirds and even a beaver in our backyard!Layered, mountain views were gorgeous, house was well stocked and very clean. We loved the game table, huge fire pit and hot tub. WIFi reception was excellent, as was cell service. The location was great, we easily traveled to Banner Elk, Black Mountain and Boone, roads were open as well as venues and businesses. . And the guest house, we didn't need it but it was included and a mini addition of the main house, an added extra! Rent it, we would love to rent it again!

My husband and I and our families arranged a get together at this cabin to celebrate our marriage (We got married at the courthouse with just our parents a few months earlier) Our families had not spent much time together due to living far away from each other, so this was a great opportunity for everyone to get to know each other and enjoy time together. Everyone loved it, and appreciated that they had room to spread out and have their own space when we were not all hanging out together in the kitchen/living room area or game room. The kids loved frolicking in the yard, and they even flew kites outside one day when the wind was right for it. Overall, it was a wonderful time and the perfect place for us! Would highly recommend!!!

We got about 9 inches of snow while staying at this house. It was magical! We got together with old friends from all over to go skiing at Beech Mountain (about 20 min drive). Everyone had enough space and the kitchen and seating areas were big enough to handle all the bodies. We had a small issue upon arrival in which the host sent someone out immediately. You will definitely need 4 wheel drive to access the property and could get dangerous traveling in snow. The neighborhood roads tended to get plowed by afternoon, but you are at the top of a mountain so best to take precautions. Kitchen was well stocked, beds and pillows were nice. Game room was fun as multiple games could be played at once. Nice hill for sledding. We had our skis delivered using a local company and they were able to access it easily. Would recommend to anyone and would book again!

We were supposed to come up to Banner Elk the day hurricane Helene hit, so didn’t actually get there. The rating is for the communication. The host called several times the day before and the day of with updates, ultimately telling us we wouldn’t be able to come up since the town was actually unable to get to due to road closures. He saved us trying to get there and potentially being in life threatening danger by trying. Hoping to go up again after rebuilding.

This property is an excellent value. Since you basically have three separate spaces its like getting three homes in one. The beds are extremely comfortable and the master upstairshas an adjustable base that makes it even better. The kitchen has everything you would need and the coffee bar is a perfect touch. The house sits on one of the highest points so the views are amazing. The grassy area below the main house hosted turkeys deer and rabbits. They were fun to watch. The guest house has great privacy and offers respit feom the rest of the group when needed. The game room has a huge TV for sports games or movine night. You will not be disappointed. JimCarrie
