We loved the house! We saw tons of frogs on the porch at night, a bald eagle right above us on the beach.
This is a great place for a larger group to get away. The property is extremely well-maintained, and sits on a high bluff over Lake Michigan. It has the best set of stairs down to the beach I have ever seen, lighted and very sturdy! The backyard area is lovely, with a spacious deck, nice landscaping and beautiful views and wildlife. The beach, depending on the water level, has plenty of sand and feels private. The house itself devotes most of the space to the common areas, kitchen, living and dining, so togetherness is easy. The kitchen has everything to feed a large group, and then some. Thanks for a great week Fritz!
We had an excellent week at the house. We appreciated the quiet location and the enjoyable beach that was down a hundred or so steps from the house , which were not too bad of a climb. The outdoor patio and grassy area was a very nice setting for dining, looking at the lake and enjoying the company of our family. The neighbor's houses were not visible from the property and we heard very little noise from the neighbors. The common/family room has plenty of seating with a great view of the lake and lake breezes come through the two sliding glass doors. The kitchen was adequate in its size and equipment. There are six bedrooms in the house. Four of the rooms have either full or queen size beds (there was a debate on the size of the beds). Two other rooms have two sets of bunk beds. Two of the rooms have windows that when opened give a lake breeze. Those two rooms also open up to the common/family room and due to the thin walls and doors activity from the main part of the house can easily be heard in those two bedrooms. Our only real complaint would be the quality of the mattresses. The full/queen size mattresses could stand to be upgraded or updated. Overall we were happy with our rental and would recommend it to others
We had a wonderful week at this beautiful property. There was plenty of living space and outdoor space to accommodate our group of 16! We were impressed with the quality of outdoor/beach furniture, lush bath and beach towels, excellent grill, fire pit, well equipped kitchen with plenty of glasses and dishes, and the many supplies that were included from toilet paper, soaps, trash bags, etc. Being a frequent renter of cottages, it was nice to have these types of items included. We enjoyed the swimming and relaxing on the beach every day as well as the activities offered in the area. All of the information provided by Fritz was accurate and he answered all questions. We would highly recommend this property to other families.
When our family members began to arrive from Oregon, California, Virginia and various locations in Michigan, the response from the adults and the children was basically, this place is gorgeous!. That evening, we had a rehearsal beach party with a bonfire and felt as if we had the entire coastline to ourselves in both directions. We went on to celebrate my daughter's wedding on the beach the next day and enjoy a sit-down reception dinner on the spacious decks overlooking Lake Michigan in the evening. People asked over and over How did you find such a beautiful spot? It is just perfect! For the remainder of the week, my immediate family thoroughly enjoyed ourselves: inside around the jig-saw puzzles at a table in the living room; sharing lunches on the deck or on the lawn(where there was always a spot to suit one's fancy, full-sunshine or full shade and everything in-between); and best of all, time on the beach to frolic in the water or to just relax. Much of the time, it felt as if we were on a deserted island with miles of lake stretching out to the horizon and towering sand dune bluffs behind us. We felt truly blessed to be in such a special place. All of the adults agreed: There just aren't many places in the world to compare with the beauty and the solitude of this spot. In addition, different family members made time to: golf at two near-by courses, rent Jeep Wranglers at Silver Lake Dunes, go horse-back riding, to visit an outstanding petting zoo, and the big outing of the week, go to Michigan Adventure for the day. In addition, we found the owner, Mr. Fritz Gearhart, to be pleasant and helpful, esp. in regard to getting the outside area prepared for the wedding and reception to follow.
Our family and friends enjoyed a week long stay in August at this lakefront cottage in Rothbury. The 6 bedrooms - while each a bit small - gave us plenty of sleeping space for three couples, one single adult and three children. The common space, both inside and outside, is immense and well furnished. The most amazing element of this home is it's location. The cottage is set back a ways from the main road and once down the wooded driveway, it offers an oasis of solitude and privacy. The views of Lake Michigan from the house and the backyard are spectacular. There is a very long (but extremely well maintained) staircase down to the shore. Once at the lake level, there is a short path through interdunal wetlands and wildflowers to the beach. The beach is very private and offers beautiful sand and shallow swimming (at least when the lake temperature warms up). The location is also very accessible to lots of other fun Michigan activities: Michigan's Adventure is a short drive, as is the world-class Silver Lake recreation area. The quaint towns of Pentwater and Ludington are just a bit further up the lakeshore. I strongly recommend this cottage if you are looking for a lakefront location that will sleep a large number of guests.
