It's possible to dig your own fossils in the Wheeler High School Fossil Beds for a small fee.
We really enjoyed our visit.
We plan to visit again. Barbara was welcoming and responsive to our questions. The cottage was well equipped and comfortable.
This was our third stay at Hollyhock. The quiet, the lovely flowers, shrubs, and trees, and -- best of all -- the warm welcome shown to us by Barbara and Aruna have made this our favorite getaway spot.
There was no rush or time frame. Cabin was great and comfortable.
House was cute and cool (thanks A/C)! Loved the availability of maps and suggestions for things to do. Barbara was incredibly nice and friendly.
Hollyhock Cottage is a great location for exploring the John Day Fossil Units (Painted Hills, Clarno and Sheep Rock). The residents of Mitchell, Oregon were friendly.
Barbara has created truly beautiful garden retreats with her cottages. Hollyhock Cottage was perfect for my husband, myself and dog for 3 nights. We had sunny weather to explore the magical Painted Hills & surrounding area. The cottage had all the amenities one could need and was clean and cozy, plenty of hot water, books, DVDs and information on the area. We dream of returning one day. Thank you so much Barbara, your warmth and hospitality will always be remembered.
Cozy cottage, very clean. Barbara was a lovely hostess. Very friendly and helpful. We will be back!
I felt home right away when I entered the cottage. Cozy, clean and sunny. you can go from the bedroom directly in the garden and take your coffee out there. The owners are very friendly and creative, you can see that whereever you look. I'll be back for sure and fell in love with the Painted Hills.
My adult daughter and I stayed in Hollyhock House for two nights in October and felt completely at home. Barbara and Aruna's thoughtful attention to detail meant we had everything we needed at our fingertips. Bring food for your meals ~ the house is well equipped for cooking. The John Day Fossil National Monument and Painted Hills are treasures we were able to explore knowing a cozy home awaited us at the end of the day. Highlights of our stay included encountering flocks of quail in the backyard, seeing a dozen plus wild turkeys on our walk through the neighborhood and observing more than one herd of deer by the roadside. The maps and reading material provided will make it easy for you to plan your forays into this magical land. Thank you, Barbara and Aruna.
