The painted Hills cottage is one of our favorite getaways in Oregon! Beautiful, setting in lush garden, and central Oregon’s painted Hills! What more could you want?
These cottages seem appropriately situated among the Painted Hills. Our cottage was comfortable and had the amenities we needed. Lots of artistic touches including art supplies for kids. Garden was eclectic and comfortable except for the usual bugs. Well located within the Fossil Beds National Monument. Very limited local resources so be prepared to bring your own groceries and fuel up in Prineville or John Day. Pet friendly. Neighborhood not really walkable but has lovely view. Kitchen was reasonably stocked with basics.
So many things we enjoyed about the cottage and the town of Mitchell, but number one would have to be the garden, where we spent hours—grilling, exploring, delighting, enjoying morning tea/coffee and evening wine. Loved the recommendations: a swimming hole, an old road for strolling with dogs, the Kam Wah Chung museum, all 3 units of the John day fossil beds. Kids loved the video selection and the game room. A lovely, restful, family-friendly place!
The painted hills cottage was a very nice place to stay while exploring the John Day monument. It looked even better than on the pictures. The host provided us with some great places to add to our adventure. We especially enjoyed the priest hole swimming area. Thank you.
Just like the photos show, the cottage is surrounded with a wonderful garden full of flowers and birds. We enjoyed watching mom robin come and go from the front porch and the place is one of the quietest places we have ever stayed. The cottage is filled with light and art and well equipped for cooking, reading and watching movies. Owner Barbara and her dog Ella were very welcoming and a treat to talk with. One small drawback, because of trees and a nearby street light, the grounds aren’t great for stargazing, but Barbara told us of a great spot nearby. And, last but not least, the gorgeous Painted Hills are an easy seven mile drive. This is the only place we’d stay in Mitchell.
We were in awe when we first arrived at the cottage. The garden was full of tulips and many other flowers in bloom, Adirondack chairs on the green lawn, and whimsical unexpected garden statues and sculptures hidden all around. . It was full of singing birds and really no other noise. Inside it was super cozy and painted with surprising colors. It was also full of leaflets and flyers and lots of information about the area. Well-stocked kitchen, friendly neighbors in the other cabins. Just unforgettable! We explored the mountains and hills for 3 days. We want to return to this totally unique, special place !
A unique place to stay with lovely gardens and comfortable, homey accomodations. Hummingbirds where everywhere. The experience was enchanting. close to the Painted Hills and John Day Fossil Beds. Bring your provisions and enjoy the quiet respite. Don't forget to look up at the stars and be amazed.
We're had a delightful time. The cottage is as advertised and more. The grounds are wonderful. You drive through miles of nothing, pull into a charming little town with what looks like a population of 3 and then, arrive at the cottage. What a great place with a wonderful host. The Painted Hills are close by and beautiful.
This is our second visit to this wonderful home. The home is well stocked, clean and the garden is beautiful to sit out and relax or eat meals. There is a lot to do in the area for many days out, local walks, the John Day river is great for swimming. We shopped at the local shop a short walk from the house for lunches and snacks. The host provided lots of local information on walks, swimming holes and scenic drives and day trips which was great. Highly recommend the cottages for a family holiday, an area of natural beauty and lots to do!.
