Hillsdale, New York
Renovated barn sits just over the state line from the Berkshires, nestled on ten acres of the rolling hills of glorious Columbia County. It overlooks 1000 acres of Audubon Sanctuary and a crystal clear babbling stream which runs 8 to 10 months of the year. We are on a lovely quiet road for walking with beautiful views of the Taconic Ridge. The cottage is perfect for a person or couple who needs a get-a-way with no distractions unless they want them. It's a multi-level open plan cottage with original 1904 beams. Downstairs is an entry room, bath, and a living room/dining area with a modern kitchen and wood-burning stove. Upstairs is a bedroom with a queen sized bed (new Casper mattress) and a study/den that includes a 2' x 8' desk top/work surface and 3 daybeds. The study area has a large window in front of the desk opening to the stream, a native meadow and woods. All systems are recently updated and the kitchen is fully equipped. There are air conditioners on both floors.
The barn also faces our flower and organic vegetable garden with an orchard beyond with apples, pears and persimmons. Beyond the pine trees, set in the meadow, is a 16' by 36' pool surrounded by hydrangea and plantings.
Hillsdale is the gateway between the Berkshires and the Hudson Valley. We are conveniently located one mile from the hamlet with its IGA, gift shops, diner, fine restaurants including the new Roe Jan Brewery, amazing library and the beautiful 400 acre Roe Jan Park. We are four miles from Catamount skiing. The cottage is a short drive from three great small towns. Ten miles east you'll find the Berkshire town of Great Barrington with desirable shopping, dining and entertainment. Heading west, we are 15 miles from the dynamic town of Hudson with antiques, galleries, restaurants and Club Helsinki. Millerton is 17 miles south. The amount of first-rate activity in this rural setting is astounding. Not only are there extraordinary arts, dining and shopping but also the great outdoors - trails, fishing, biking, Bash Bish Falls and climbing. The just opened Hillsdale section of the Harlem Valley Rail Trail, 1/3 mile down the road from us, makes a 2-1/2 mile loop with our our road. Cultural highlights include Jacob's Pillow, Tanglewood, Barrington Stage Theater, Berkshire Theater Festival, Shakespeare and Co., Falcon Ridge Folk Festival and many museums. (Note: Sign on cottage is a family heirloom, not a commercial venture.)

I went to visit my son who is attending boarding school in the area. I explored all of the surrounding areas, lots of shopping, hiking, and yoga. It was a great trip and I was very happy with my accommodations.
Longest of our 3 stays here over past 4 summers & it couldn’t be better, Claudia & John are not only fantastic hosts, but their impeccable taste & loving care of property continues to provide a priceless country haven of beauty & serenity.
We just loved the place, property, and neighborhood. The cottage had everything we needed to relax and cook outside and in. John and Claudia were very welcoming.
Private, pleasant aesthetics, hush quiet, comfortable and well-equipped. Property owners friendly and readily accessible, kept us supplied with wood for the stove keeping the entire cottage plenty snug. Third time renting this home-away-from-home, a favorite getaway 2 hours from NYC, close to Hudson NY and Great Barrington MA with easy access to nature, life’s necessities and the arts.
We received what we expected, the hosts were very accommodating.
We just love everything about this place and staying here. I think part of that is that we are very visual and live in a nyc apartment without views, so for us staying in a cozy place with expansive views and thoughtful aesthetic details is such a treat. We loved watching both snow falling out the window and ice formations along the creek as well as watching it melt and spring appear. We enjoyed starting hikes from the back yard as well as the rail trail, the falls, and skiing so close by in addition to great food locally and in Hudson and Great Barrington. The new mattress on the queen size bed was a dream. We aren't looking for a tv when we go away so we appreciate not having one in the space. We truly appreciate such thoughtful and welcoming hosts!
The house was all we could ask for - comfortable, clean, with friendly, supportive hosts. The kitchen was wonderfully equipped, the location was perfect - conveniently close to town yet in country-like setting.
This was my second stay at Copake cottage, so I’m an established fan. Close to a number of towns with plenty to do yet secluded and peaceful when creekside with a nicely equipped kitchen and a wood burning stove if we wanted to be homey. Comfortable windowed work area for creative ventures or daydreams. Congenial owner on property if needed. We’ll be back!
This cottage was a perfect base for our week-long exploration of the Berkshires, NW CT, and the Hudson River Valley. John is a great host and we enjoyed privacy and full use of his beautiful property!
We would happily stay here again. The cottage is the perfect spot to stay while exploring the Hudson River Valley and the Berkshires. The house was perfectly equipped and stocked for all of our needs as well as comfortably furnished. I could not have asked for a prettier location, and our hosts were kind and helpful. The pool was the icing on the cake and we have missed it every single day since we left.
