Lil's on the Lake is a cottage right on Crystal Lake that is rustic, but also very charming and historic. Has been owned by the same family since the 1930's. Very child-friendly and pet-friendly with a huge, fully fenced-in yard. Beautiful view of Crystal Lake from the eastern shore. Firepit, outdoor picnic tables, Wi-Fi, streaming television, and lots of parking space as well! Also just a short walk (2 blocks) from fun & family-friendly downtown Beulah and Beulah Beach on Crystal Lake!

INTERACTION WITH GUESTS:

Our local property manager lives in the area and is available to address any issues as needed.

NEIGHBORHOOD:

The cottage is also located just 2 blocks away from downtown Beulah. Beulah is a cute little northern Michigan town located on the east end of Crystal Lake. The town was founded name iin 1880 by Reverent Charles E. Bailey and its name is actually Biblical in nature. It has a cute little main street (Benzie Blvd.) which has a nice collection of shops, restaurants, cafes, a post office, and a couple of bars. We would particularly recommend Ursa Major Bistro and L'Chayim Delicatessen in terms of places to eat in downtown Beulah. One of the neat surprises in Beulah is that there is a wonderful interactive children's science museum called COGnition right on Benzie Blvd. just a short walk (less than 5 minutes) from the cottage!

The cottage is located in beautiful Benzie County, one of the most pristine and natural environments in all of Michigan, and there are a number of other things to do in the area:

* Probably the most popular attraction in all of northwest Michigan is Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. It is incredibly picturesque collection of natural beauty in terms of Lake Michigan, dunes, forests, wildlife, and inland lakes and rivers. There is a vast collection of hiking trails throughout the park and kayaking, canoeing, and tubing on the rivers and lakes is also very popular. The park starts about 8 miles away from the cottage, just north of the west end of Crystal Lake.

* The cottage is just a 10-minute drive from the lovely beachtown of Frankfort on Lake Michigan. Frankfort and nearby Elberta offer a fun collection of beaches, shops, restaurants, cafes, a movie theater, a microbrewery, and a few bars. Frankfort has a very popular public beach on Lake Michigan and Elberta (just across Betsie Lake from Frankfort) offers a more pristine and much less navigated natural beach. (Dogs are allowed everywhere at Elberta Beach, but are only allowed on certain portions of Frankfort Beach.) The Frankfort Lighthouse is also one of the famous and historical lighthouses on Lake Michigan.

* There is wonderful bike trail nearby. It's called the Betsie Valley Bike Trail and it runs 22 miles from Frankfort to Elberta, then along the Betsie River to Beulah, and then on over to Thompsonville. It is accessible just a few blocks from the cottage.

* The area is widely renowned for fishing! Crystal Lake is excellent for perch as well as rock bass. Ice fishing on Crystal Lake for smelt is a popular activity in the winter. Coho salmon, lake trout, and northern pike are also fished in the lake. Salmon fishing on Lake Michigan, the Betsie River, and the Platte River (just north of Beulah) is definitely the biggest fishing attraction though.

* The cottage is just a 5-minute drive from the Cherry Bowl Drive-In Theater. Although it's one of the last drive-in movie theaters in Michigan, it's thriving quite nicely and is a very popular place for an affordable family or couples outing.

* If a larger city environment is desired with more and trendier shops, restaurants, and nightlife, then Traverse City is just 45 minutes away from the cottage. It is the cultural, entertainment, dining, and shopping hub of northern Michigan and, although still relatively small and very safe, it provides a bit of big city feel to tourists and locals.

GUEST ACCESS:

Guests have full access to all of the house as well as the entire yard. Note that there is a boat dock on Crystal Lake in front of the cottage, but it used by the neighbors and is not available to guests. There is also a small storage shed in the yard that is only used for storage and is not accessible by guests.

TRANSIT:

Public transportation in the area is quite limited and having a car is really quite necessary. Cars can park anywhere on the large, fenced-in yard. (There are 2 gates for the fence.)

PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING:

1) HEATING: Note that the cottage does not have a basement or a furnace. We utilize electric space heaters to heat the house in the spring and the fall as needed.
2) BONFIRES: There is a bonfire ring at the property. Bonfires must be attended at all times and must be fully extinguished using water.
3) REGISTRATION: This property is officially registered with the Village of Beulah, Michigan, as a short-term rental (STR) property. The registration number is 22031.
4) PET POLICY: Up to 3 dogs are permitted at the property. If bringing 1 to 3 dogs, please make certain that they are included on the reservation and that the pet fee is appropriately paid. More than 3 dogs is strictly prohibited and any pets other than dogs are also strictly prohibited.
5) AIR CONDITIONING: Please note that the property does NOT have air conditioning. As such, it may get warm in the house during the summer if it is warm outside.
6) NUMBER OF GUESTS: Please note that our pricing is based upon the number of guests, with pricing being higher with each additional guest that is included on the reservation. Please make certain that the correct number of guests is specified on the reservation so that the pricing is correct.
7) EARLY CHECK-IN: Our policy is to allow early check-in on the day of arrival if the property is available for check-in. We will not know until the day before arrival whether or not the property will be available for early check-in or not. You can check with our local property manager the day before arrival or on your arrival day to see if the property will be available for early check-in or not.
8) LATE CHECK-OUT: We maintain a very strict and structured cleaning schedule. As such, late check-outs are strictly prohibited.

We loved the fenced in yard for our pup.We loved the closed in wrap around porch. We needed to move from the bedroom nearest to the kitchen to the bedroom near the porch as that bed was by far more comfortable.

The house has a lot of space to move around and lots of choices to gather. The yard is big and totally fenced in. It's convenient to be able to walk into town and to the beach. Overall, it's what we expected. It's old and could be cleaner. I spent the first day cleaning the spider webs from the corners and ceilings, the cabinets and kitchen floor. It served our purpose and we had a good time in Beulah.

The stay was great, the big porch was absolutely amazing to sit out on and watch the sunsets at night. It would get a little warm with no AC on hot days but having the windows open let in a beautiful breeze at night. Such a convenient location to the beach and fishing especially with young kids! Awesome yard for the dogs fenced in, worked out very well. The charm of the house was cute, def older and you can’t care about aesthetic staying here but that made it great staying at a lake house. Just a couple downsides, no washer for laundry we used some of the same towels over again for shower and I like to keep up with laundry but there’s a laundromat close near by I just decided to live on vacation and forget about laundry so it really wasn’t a big deal at all! The other thing that maybe needed some work was to spray the outside of house for bugs. There were a lot of bugs and spiders. Couple HUGE spiders in the porch that my we had to kill , lots of those mayfly type bugs outside during the day without a breeze (which is expected being by the water I wasn’t upset at all) but was sometimes hard to play outside without bugs flying on you. And there were a lot of ants in the kitchen and on the counter that I had to watch for when I prepped food. Besides the bugs the house was great. Awesome walking right to the town. Would def recommend (if you can handle bugs like us) and we would consider coming back! Thanks for a great stay!

This spot is a gem. Stone’s throw to the beach, great yard, and a wonderful water view. My husband has been telling me about growing up and coming to Crystal Lake twice a summer until he was 22. When I showed him this rental in VRBO, he said he remembered walking by this house as a kid and was excited to stay here and we booked immediately. The massive sleeping porch was a favorite hangout during our stay, with so many seating options in addition to the beds. We loved the vibe of the entire house. It was also walkable to the main strip of town, which was great!

My family has been to Michigan almost every summer for over 40 years. We used to camp but now like the idea of staying in a house. Our teenagers and my cousins kiddos who are younger LOVED the big yard, being able to walk to market in downtown Beulah and being so close to the beach. This rustic farm house was perfect for our two families. It may not be “updated” but we absolutely loved our time there!

The view is amazing, very well stocked. I also enjoyed being so close to a great beach. Can’t think of a better place to hang out in the large yard throwing a frisbee and grilling out. The porch is huge, plenty of blankets. I would come back for sure

(These comments are intended for Agape and not necessarily the masses) Location, view, yard, porch, etc., all great. The biggest limitation is the single bathroom. If there was some way to get a second toilet it would be a big improvement. The second limitation is the kitchen. I realize it is because the foundation is settling but some of the drawers and cupboards do not open. Also, there is almost no counter space to prepare food. We can make due, but even a skinny folding table would be an improvement. That said, we will likely rent again in the future. One more thing - the grill is rusted through and is on its last legs. The grill cover as also quite deteriorated. Replacing them would be another plus. Mike Barrie

Enjoyed for the most part. Two out of three guests spotted a mouse in the kitchen. Mouse droppings were in drawers and most especially lower cupboards.

I was worried that the home wasn't lakefront and that the road in front of the home would be an issue; but I was wrong. The public beach and town is less than a 4 minute walk. The walk is also very pleasant and the road in front of the home is pedestrian and bike friendly. There is a place nearby to rent pontoon boats, kayaks, and bicycles if needed. Apparently, there is also a bike trail from Beulah that will take you to Frankfort. Residents and business owners all seem friendly and welcoming. It is a very small, but quaint town with lots to do for a long weekend. There also seemed to be some sort of pickle ball/tennis court action going on at a park next to the beach - if that's your thing. You also cannot beat the wrap around porch views from this home. Now the cons or things you should know - there is only one bathroom and shower, I did not locate a washer or dryer anywhere in the house, but maybe I didn't open enough of the tall cabinets (there is a laundromat in town), doesn't appear to be any heat, definitely no air conditioning (not needed when I stayed here and fans provided), and there were a lot of spiders in the enclosed porch area and upstair bedrooms' windows. If you plan on using the roller beds, just be aware that spiders will be your roomates (got bit on the eyebrow). Also the porch is sloping near the windows and there are drilled holes spread throughout that covered with little rugs so bugs/spiders might always have access to the home.
