Damariscotta, Maine
Honeymoon Island is a perfect getaway. The cottage is accessible by boat and can accommodate 6 people. It is complete with a gas stove and refrigerator. There is a new shower house on the mainland where you can freshen up each day. The cozy eating area is a great place to start your day by enjoying a cup of coffee and watching the wildlife on the island. Great 360 degree views of Pemaquid Lake. Maximum occupancy is 6.
7 mile long lake connects to 3 mile long lake. Tremendous work out.
The island cottage was such a magical relaxing spot for a getaway! We were told to bring everything, but they had more creature comforts than we expected! The mattresses are pretty lumpy, but the sound of the loons and the breeze of the water more than compensated for any discomfort. We loved paddle boarding around and having campfires each night. Sometimes the wind made the row back to shore a challenge (and our boat took on a little water. This is a lovely spot for a relaxing week!!
We had a lovely week on the island. The house is charming, made comfortable by a working fridge and oven (and comfortable beds, everything spotlessly clean) but otherwise probably unchanged in 100 years — which is very very charming. Lovely old wood furniture and pretty curtains etc. Our children were ENCHANTED by being on an island especially one surrounded by water full of bass (they spent most of their time fishing). Because the lake is quite shallow around the island it is warm to swim in. The owners are very kind and welcoming - whole place has the nice atmosphere of a longtime family business. Highly recommend!
We enjoyed birdwatching, kayaking, and swimming off the island (bring water shoes) and appreciated its quiet seclusion! The cabin was spotless and the propane fridge and stove work fine. The composting toilet, shoehorned into a preexisting outhouse, is awkward to use but didn’t project bad smells. Many thanks to the owners/hosts for being welcoming, trusting, and responsive to questions and requests.
We wanted to have a beautiful off grid spot for our vacation that still let us enjoy all of mid coast Maine. And this was perfect. Our private island was only boat accessible, so we canoed 350 yards as our commute each day. Back on our island, it was quiet, private, and just rustic enough to feel like we were hardy folk.
The island was peaceful, beautiful, and relaxing. The 360° views were stunning. The cabin has no potable water and there is composting toilet/ outhouse, but we survived just fine. My kids enjoyed campfires on the point and rowing around the island. We played games and swam and went on day trips all over Mid Coast Maine. The caretakers were incredible and very responsive. We would definitely return.
