The region

Countisbury is a tiny hamlet perched high on the Exmoor coast above Lynmouth, roughly two miles east along the A39. It has a 13th-century coaching inn, a historic church, and some of the most dramatic coastal views in Devon.

The hamlet sits at the top of the famous Countisbury Hill, where the road descends steeply into Lynmouth with gradients reaching 25%. This stretch of the A39 is one of the most spectacular drives in the country, with views across the Bristol Channel to Wales on clear days. The name Countisbury derives from a Saxon word meaning 'camp on the headland', referring to the Iron Age hill fort at Wind Hill nearby.

For everyday amenities, the twin villages of Lynton and Lynmouth are your nearest ports of call, just two miles away. Lynton sits on the cliff top and has a good range of shops, cafes, restaurants, a small supermarket, post office, chemist, and the Lyn and Exmoor Museum. The harbour village of Lynmouth sits below at sea level, connected by the famous water-powered cliff railway. Both villages have a welcoming selection of pubs, tea rooms, and independent shops.

The larger towns of Barnstaple (approximately 20 miles) and Minehead (approximately 20 miles) offer supermarkets and a wider range of services.

Cottage. Location absolutely superb.booking via verbo no problem. However dealings with Best of exmoor cottages need a lot to be desired. Hence went via verbo. As a high level uk travel professional myself i found best of exmoor cottages off-putting and certainly not a company i would consider using in the future. But the Cottage itself is excellent

We hired Dashel Cottage with two friends who are retired like us. It was utterly peaceful and we loved exploring Exmoor each day then returning in the evenings to dine in comfort in the cosy cottage. Three bedrooms and three bathrooms were perfect for our party and the cottage is so well fitted out and comfortable.

It is a very picturesque area, but quite hilly. The property is very clean and has lovely comfortable beds and pillows. A nice enclosed garden, especially if you have dogs. There is no phone/text reception around the property. You have to go up to the top to the main road to get any.

Very comfortable and cosy cottage. Well equipped kitchen, lovely bedrooms and bathrooms, efficient central heating and log fire. Wi-fi excellent. Good enclosed garden for dog. Superb walks directly from door on marked footpaths. Lots of pubs and places to visit within short distance by car.

We loved our stay at Dashel. A beautiful quiet location but still really reachable to so many great places. The cottage was spotless and it’s was great to explore the farm with my little boy. We will definitely be coming back again.

Wonderful cottage with ideal location. Clean and smart, the ideal holiday property; at night it is pitch black and the stars shine even brighter. No passing traffic, exceptionally quiet and plenty of walks from the doorstep. Easy to communicate with Christina and could not be better. Had the two grandson for the weekend and they loved walking in the fields and looking for the pheasants. One of those really genuine holiday destination, going to book for next June.
