Surry, Maine
This wonderful property sits majestically at where the waters of Union Bay, Contention Cove, Union River and Pattern Bay all coalesce to provide an expansive and varied waterfront experience. The beachfront is excellent, the setting private and serene, and all is nearby to some of Maine's most desired locations. It is but a short drive to the Bar Harbor and Acadia region, with easy access to Blue Hill, Ellsworth, and Deer Isle, Stonington and Castine, too! Located in the rural town of Surry, Contention Cove Cottage enjoys the peace and serenity of Surry's rural community, yet with amenities and attractions close at hand. The surrounding neighborhood provides a charming mix of homes, as well as peaceful roadways to take an evening or morning jaunt.
No land line, cell phone reception is fine.
The home itself exudes old style, yet with an open spaciousness not usually seen in homes of this age. A large and open living/dining area overlooks a large stone fireplace to one side, with large plate glass windows capturing the views over the bay to the other, as well as doorway opening to the wrap-around, covered porch. The kitchen is likewise spacious, with added sitting area just off to the side, all overlooking the back yard.....along with ocean views from the door which opens to the wrap-around porch.
There is a spacious main level master bedroom and full bath, as well as 3 additional bedrooms and full bath on the second floor.
For those looking for an old-style, oceanfront Maine Cottage with a convenient location to enjoy the amenities of both the Acadia and Blue Hill region, look no further!
A group of friends stayed at this property the third weekend of October. This is a four bedroom house right on the ocean, literally 20 ft from the bay waters. The directions and the check-in process we're very organized. The property was clean. There are four bedrooms in this property. A few repairs were being done previous to our stay but that did not affect our stay at all. Tremendous wildlife was seen from the front porch from which we spent a lot of time. This property is close to the very charming town of Ellsworth, and a little over 20 mi from Bar Harbor. Our entire party gave the property five stars and would stay here again in a heartbeat. A couple of notes, I rented a very large vehicle to accommodate for people in our luggage, and that was a bit interesting getting into the property with that large vehicle as Stagecoach Lane is very narrow with some tight turns. Also note is that the House has no central heater air, the beautiful gas fireplace in the living room warmed that room nicely and there are some space heaters. Our stay was wonderful and comfortable and I highly recommend this property.
We wanted to spend some time at Acadia NP and this location was very convenient to the park.
First of all the location is excellent, beautiful veiws of the bay seal watching from the beach. That being said, the check in was a very stressfull. Did not receive any information about check in process. Could not contact property management at all. After trying repeatedly to contact the property Management up to and after our check in time, we had to contact VRBO directly. They also could not get in touch with management. We were traveling several hours and did not know if we had a place to stay.An hour and a half AFTER check in we received a call from the house keeper and received the information on how to enter property. Did not hear anything else the rest of our stay.from property management. The house had all amenities, full well equipped kitchen, kayaks However it felt like it was under construction and not all put together. There was no instruction on how to close the house(linens , ect.) The only instruction we had was to take our garbage to transfers station or we would be charged $12 a bag. There was no instruction to seperate recyclables, as we are from a state this is not required, we had no idea until we were at the tranfer station and had to do it there. We have stayed at a lot of rental properties and they always leave instruction, and have open lines of communication. Beautiful location and the house has lots of potential, poor management!
The inside of the house looked like a renovation site. The main floor bedroom door did not close, the main floor bathroom door did not close. There was a lot of mildew in the bathroom and the shower curtain was about a foot too long also mildewed
We fell in love with this place!
The location cannot be beat. Beautiful views can been seen out of almost every window. The house seemed a bit run down and there are a lot of things on the house that needs attention with easy fixes. There was some sort of mix up and the house was only half cleaned when we arrived. The management team was quick to address the problem even on a weekend. We would stay here again.
The view was incredible, the small beach was perfect for children, and the protected cove made swimming, paddle boarding and kayaking the best part of our stay.
This was a nice home with a nice view of the water. Rental property was nice to work with.
The house was wonderful. Location Location is all I can say. Sitting on the porch watching the water was wonderful. Would definately stay there again. A bit confusing on finding it at first.. long dirt road.
We aren't very fond of having loads of people around and this place fit right in with what we wanted. On bad weather days or days when we didn't feel like going out, it was amazing to be able to sit and taking in the scenery and play with the kids on the beach. The only downside was trying to get rid of trash. You have to take it to the transfer station in town.
Everything with the cottage was great - it was pretty clean and spacious enough for our group. Getting there at night was difficult as it's at the end of a dirt road with few street signs/numbers. It was unclear whether there were kayaks and canoes at the cottage and available for us to use. When I asked the rental company they of course encouraged us to rent boats from them. We got there and found there were several canoes, kayaks, and life vests for us to use, so didn't have to spend the extra $ renting additional ones. I tried communicating with the rental company prior to and during our stay and they never answered my calls. Instead of returning my calls, they would send emails and email communication wasn't very good either. They left out information, only partially answering questions, or answering some but not others. Very frustrating. Luckily, the view from the cottage more than made up for these annoyances. You can see the water out almost every bedroom window and at high tide you feel like you could be on a house boat! It was close to a couple of towns with nice restaurants, grocery stores, and shops and not too far from Bar Harbor and Acadia. We had a great time during our stay!
The photos of the water from the back porch didn’t do the actual scenic view justice - it was spectacular. The house itself was comfortable with all the amenities we needed, but that back porch was where we relaxed, ate our meals, watched the “resident” heron & eagle and more. We waded, swam and/or fished daily. We had easy access to Blue Hill, Ellsworth, Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park & Bucksport. We spent our days with trips to the Cranberry Islands, Thuya & Asticou Gardens, the Schoodic Peninsula, a Pemetic Mountain hike, the Margaret Todd schooner trip around Frenchman’s Bay, Rhoades Butterfly Garden, Woodlawn, Fort Knox & the Narrows Bridge Observatory….and reading books and playing cards and enjoying time with family and friends on that back porch.
This cottage was lovely! It’s like your favorite pair of shoes, worn in just right and perfectly comfortable. The view is a show stopper, absolutely beautiful! The kids loved hanging out in the hammock. We ate dinner on the porch most nights. The sunsets were beautiful and we even got up to see the sunrise one morning. We saw a variety of birds, crabs, small fish and starfish on the beach at the house. The house was well stocked with all the dishes we could need and plenty of towels and paper products for our family of 7. There is a few games in the house and we had fun playing those. The house was nice and clean when we arrived with fresh wildflowers on the table. You need to drop off your trash but it is a very short drive and super easy. A couple suggestions, black out curtains for the bedrooms, we were up early every day because the rooms was very bright. Also the windows needed cleaning, it took away from the view, but I just used the windex under the sink. We drove in to Acadia and Bar Harbor but liked that we were not staying right in Bar Harbor with all the crowds. We loved this house and our kids asked if we could move in so I would call it a success. We would definitely stay here again!
