Stayed Aug 5, 2025Our stay at Ptarmigan Cottage was truly wonderful. Nestled in a peaceful and picturesque setting near a welcoming local pub and just a short walk from the train station, it offered the perfect balance of tranquility and convenience. One of our group arrived by train from England, and having the station so close made things incredibly easy. The cottage itself was beautifully equipped, with all the modern comforts we could ask for, including cozy beds and soft linens. But what really made it special was the setting. Surrounded by stunning scenery, we found ourselves constantly captivated by the view from the window. The bird feeders just outside added an extra touch of charm - a delight for everyone especially the bird lovers!Portnellan served as the perfect base for exploring the area. We took day trips to Stirling, Fort William, Oban, and even made it out to the magical islands of Mull and Iona. Yet no matter where the day took us, it was always a pleasure to return to the peace and comfort of the cottage in the evenings. It felt like a true retreat in the heart of Scotland’s natural beauty. The booking process and communication from Cameron before and after our stay was second to none. We are beyond happy to give this location a 5-star review and if we ever get back to Scotland, we already know exactly where to stay.

Stayed Aug 9, 2024This is a wonderful place and a wonderful lodge. Manager/Owner Cameron was very welcoming and supportive. The lodge is very well maintained and equipped. Many lovely details, including a busy bird feeder on the porch. Free kajaks. We will be back. But: You need a car for this location. We were travelling by train. The place is approx 4 km from Crianlarich station and from the local Londis store, and shopping etc was difficult.

Stayed May 17, 2019The property is beautifully tranquil with outstanding views and is a great base for exploring the Highlands. It took us a little over an hour to get to the property from Glasgow airport. We were able to easily do day trips to Stirling, Oban and Fort William from Portnellan Estates. Crianlarich is well labelled and easy to find based on road signs. The property has some gorgeous hiking trails that can be accessed easily from the cottages. We stayed in the comfortable Ptarmigan cottage (2 bedroom) for 3 nights and were in awe of the beautiful views from the front window. We travelled with our 2 boys (age 9 & 11) and we all LOVED the location, trails, seeing the chickens/ducks, playing ping pong in the gamesroom and use of DVD library. Owners and staff were very friendly and offered to help us if we needed anything at all. We supplied our own shampoo, conditioner and bathroom soap which would have been a nice thing for the property to supply, although I’m sure they would accommodate, if requested. The kitchen was fully equipped. The hot water situation is quirky (according to North American standards) but you just have to push a button in the kitchen to “boost” the hot water and all is well for hot showers for everyone in the family. Overall, We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this beautifully tranquil property.
