Beautifully appointed, the Lady Maxwell Room at Buittle Castle offers the experience of staying in a working, privately owned Scottish Castle. The room is on the ground floor, with its own private access to the courtyard (with one step) and its own ensuite bathroom with shower. Full Scottish or Continental Breakfast is included, and is served in the room. We aim to offer the guests a true 'country house' experience.

As part of our effort to reduce our environmental impact, gourmet teaand coffee are provided by the house manager upon request.

The site which the present tower occupies was once the inner bailey of the medieval Buittle Castle, one of Scotland's royal castles and twice capital of Scotland. Buittle was home to Lady Devorguilla of Galloway and the Bailliol Dynasty, and later a Jacobite stronghold of the Gordon and Maxwell families, who re-constructed the original 13th Century keep into the present L-plan tower, c.1500. Buittle Castle, unlike many such buildings, remains very much a working building, and so retains the 'feel' that these buildings had when first built, surrounded by formal gardens, livestock, vegetable growing and pleasure grounds. It is currently home to James, the 24th great grandson of Lady Devorguilla, and his cousin Tobias, who have re-acquired the castle after roughly 60 years of it being out of family ownership. The site is also home to a working printing office specialising in craft letterpress printing and bookbinding, and a medieval chapel, with an interesting Jacobite history, in which services are regularly celebrated in the pre-reformation Use of Sarum.

This is a unique stay where you are, at present, the only 2 guests, in a place steeped in history. The two guys running it, Tobias and James, are fascinating to talk to, and will show you round other parts of the property like the chapel in the vault. There’s a print studio next door as well. The breakfast is massive and very good, all local produce. One tiny improvement would be to have tea and coffee making facilities in the room. You need a car or taxi to get there but Dalbeattie town is just 3-4 mins away with all facilities

Perfect hosts, incredible room, delicious breakfast and the location is perfect. We absolutely loved everything and next time will stay for a week instead of just two nights!

I have stayed here a few times. The location for exploring south west Scotland is excellent. The key issue in this area is finding somewhere to eat in the evening, so this time I opted for the dinner provided by the B&B. This was very good, and certainly way better than you might find in local pubs (if they are open...).

Wow what a beautiful experience we had in the Lady Maxwell room and at Buittle castle. From start to finish our break was so relaxed, peaceful and charming. Tobias is a calm, empathic and tuned in host. I am neurodivergent and often struggle with intimate settings but Tobias was present when he needed to be and stepped back at the right moment. The breakfast was perfection. After this stay I would definitely return and try the private dining experience too. We didn't indulge in the hot tub but it looked lovely with beautiful views out to the gardens. The night sky was beautiful with little light pollution and good visibility. Loved meeting the dogs and the resident peacock. The castle is well situated near to Dalbeattie and Tobias has some good recommendations when visiting the local area. Will definitely return when back in this stunning part of Scotland! It was a privilege to stay in this beautiful home.

The guys were delightful when we finally saw them, but every else was a huge disappointment. We were willing to forgo the cost of the second night and move elsewhere.

The castle is a truly special place - be sure to get a tour, particularly of the 1000-yr old chapel. Delicious breakfast and beautiful room!

I had an amazing two day break at Buittle Castle. The place was amazing, beautiful location and Tobias was such an attentive host. Everything was provided that we needed and Tobias had extensive knowledge of the castle and area. I would highly recommend this castle as a holiday destination. The castle caters for small or large groups.

If you're looking for a peak into history, this is the place to go. Warm and comforting accommodations on a beautiful property. I came at the end of winter, I can only imagine what the place looks like in full bloom! Tobias and his cousin are great stewards of the castle and working hard to bring it back to its glory. Appreciate the time and attention and wealth of knowledge about the historical pieces found throughout the site.

First stop on our Scotland holiday, and we got to stay at a Castle! The owners were very friendly. Breakfast was very good and we opted to eat inside the castle which was very enjoyable. The area around there was full of activities. The grounds were lovely with some footpaths to enjoy. A short stroll to see grazing sheep, belted Gallaways and a couple Highland cows.

Buittle Castle is a lovely and ancient castle home drenched in a rich history and run by Tobias and his cousin James. Tobias cooked us delicious breakfasts and was very knowledgeable about the castle history and the area. The room was very cozy and had everything you would need to have a comfortable stay. The grounds were just beautiful with several walking footpaths that would show you scenes of the pastures, gardens, and along a stream and a river. We had a great time here, and did not feel the need to see another castle! We hope to stay here again one day!

James and Tobias made us feel very welcome to their home and shared lots of history about the place with us which was fascinating. Their affection about their home was obvious and they both enjoyed sharing that with us. James family history was fascinating and we loved the castle and their dogs which were friendly. We have fond memories of our stay with them.

We chose Buittle Castle as the place to stay after getting married earlier that day in Auchen Castle. We wanted to continue the castle theme. We were met by Tobias who is lovely. The room was as we expected from the online photos. The extra touches of a glass of sherry and a decanter of water along with the tea and coffee were nice. The sherry was lovely. Bed was big and very comfortable. Good curtains on the windows, I do love a good curtain. Bathroom, the shower is spot on. Do watch the water from the hot tap can get very hot. The room was lovely and warm. We were lucky to have a guided tour and afternoon tea in the Great Hall. The Baron (James) is very knowledgeable and the tour was very interesting. Afternoon tea - delicious. Breakfast - we chose the full Scottish and it was perfect. Our 1st try of Haggis and we really enjoyed it. The portion size was spot on, kept us full for the rest of the day. We also got to enjoy sitting on the deck chairs in the garden and did the Moat walk.

Totally misleading the advert has the guest thinking he will experience actually staying in a castle. Nope. Your saying in outhouses stables To look like castle rooms.

The history is quite remarkable and dinner in the great hall was spectacular. I felt like I was in midieval times. Have stayed in a few different castles but this experience is not to be missed. The service was excellent as was the food. Truly memorable

Me and my partner had a lovely peaceful overnight stay at this wonderfully charming Castle. We were welcomed by Tobias and made to feel at home. The room was decorated with nice period features and had interesting details to look at. We had the choice of eating in the Great Hall for breakfast which was amazing. There was plenty of outdoor space to walk around and the views were excellent. The local town of Dalbeattie was a good place to have a meal. We loved our peaceful stay, and would come back again.

We recently stayed one night at the castle and found the room to be comfortable and clean. The breakfast was as described and was brought to our room at the time requested. We particularly enjoyed the riverside walk around the castle which is easy to follow and met the approval of our dog.

We stayed two nights after visiting other parts of Scotland. Buittle Castle was a fascinating location and we were lucky to be able to talk to our hosts about the history and the substantial improvements they have made in recent years. The Lady Maxwell Room was very comfortable and well fitted out. Dinner in the main hall was organised in advance and of a high standard with an interesting and good value wine list. Breakfast was also very enjoyable and we were able to arrange an early one on the day of departure. We will definitely consider coming back if ever in this area again.
