Welcome to the SunRay Shire home of SunRay Kelley and Bonnie Howard. We are natural builders and our homes have appeared on MTV Cribs, Home and Garden Channel, in New York Times and Lloyd Kahn’s books Builders of the Pacific Cost and Tiny Homes.
We have hosted many travelers from all over the world in the unique structures on the land. The country quiet is only 10 minutes to the quaint town of Sedro Woolley and 15 minutes to city of Mount Vernon, home to the Lincoln Theatre and many excellent restaurants.
This rugged 9 acre property has walking trails, mountain views, gardens, apple orchard and many examples of handcrafted, sculptural homes and structures.
The Stump House aka Cozy Cabin ID#1541586 and Mush Room aka Fairytale Cabin ID#1541712 are adorable little cold water cabins set in a stand of giant fir and cedar trees. Each cabin overlooks a different trout pond.
The cabins have electricity, cold water sink, towels, coffee/tea station and wood fired heat in addition to electric heater fall through early spring. Texting your eta and any changes to your eta on the day of your arrival is necessary to ensures you will arrive to a lit fire and cozy, warm cabin. We provide two bundles of wood per night. More wood can be purchased for $10.00 / bundle. Bring your rain boots fall through spring as the trails get wet and muddy.
The cabins each have a comfortable double bed made up with seasonally appropriate bedding for a comfortable nights sleep. The Stump House additional has an easy chair that fold out into a small single bed to accommodate a child or third guest.
Guests are welcome to use and socialize in the beautiful outdoor kitchen located in the apple orchard. The cabins share an outdoor, composting toilet and outdoor shower house. You may schedule an evening sauna for $50.00, please message us your request or make your request with the greeter upon your arrival. If you have booked a multiple night stay make sure to include the date you desire for your evening sauna.
The rustic nature of our property is not for everyone but those who are looking to unplug, reconnect with nature and enjoy whimsical creations will not be disappointed. If you have mobility issues our property is not a good choice for you as the parking area is at least a 100 yards away from the cabins and requires a walk down an earthen trail.
We are blessed to live in the forest on Cultus Mountain in North Western Washington. The trees, mountains, clean water, earth and air nourish body and soul. Come breathe, relax and walk in the beauty of nature.
Blessings to all from SunRay and Bonnie!

FYI: Fall through early spring wood fire is required in addition to the electric heat to keep the cabins warm and cozy. Wood fire heat takes time to start and to heat the cabin. To make your winter stay warm and comfortable good communication with us about your arrival time is essential!
Let us know your ETA, at least by the morning of your arrival, so we can schedule a fire starter for your cabin. Please update us if your plans change and confirm your arrival time when your GPS says you are about 60 minutes away to have your fire lit and cabin cozy warm for your arrival.
Because guests are so frequently late we do not start your fire until you have messaged confirming your gps time of arrival when you are about an hour away.

Upon arrival Bonnie met us outside! What a breath of fresh air she was! Everyone that works/lives on the property were so friendly. I think we found our anniversary place to stay!! We went to town for dinner at The Iron Bar and Grill where I had the best crispy chicken sandwich and garlic fries. My guy had clam chowder and salad which was also amazing!! That's when we realized the town of Sedro Woolley was having their annual Blast from the Past that consisted of a street fair car show and lots of things for the kids! We walked the property and met some great kids, dogs and cats. Our favorite was the Cat Madrona that was always near our side and made herself at home in our Mushroom house for the weekend! I can't say enough great things about this place other than we WILL be back in September for the apple pressing! Thanks again for the amazing adventure!! Michelle and Kirk

What a magical time! The whole property of Sunray shire was awe inspiring! The mushroom stay was closer to a glamping experience, in the best way. The community kitchen had everything we needed to cook breakfast lunch and dinner

The Mushroom was an incredible stay. We have been there once before and fell in love with the “home in the woods” feeling. It’s so welcoming and feels very much like the perfect escape. The outdoor kitchen is easy to use and offers a refrigerator/freezer to store your food for you stay. The Sauna is a welcome addition to help steam out the remaining city vibe. No clocks, little cell signal and birds and bees singing. It’s a dream I’d like to stay in. We will be back, often.

Everything was great! Bonnie the host was a pleasure to stay with. The property itself was super fun and different, but in a good way. If you’re looking for a more rustic camping situation vs an actual hotel/cabin this is the place

Due to the lack of some creature comforts, it might not be for everyone, but I myself will 100% be returning for a repeat visit. The hut itself is cozy as all get out. And the surrounding woods, pond and mini waterfall were just perfect. The grounds themselves were a pure joy to walk and explore. This stay grounded and relaxed me even beyond what I had hoped for.

We loved the eclectic Mush Room Cottage! It was super cozy, clean, warm. The surrounding area was woodsy and beautiful. A stream and waterfall right outside the cottage is tranquil. You can’t help but want to take a nap under the skylight. This is the perfect place to relax. We brought wine and snacks for a fun bedside picnic. The owner Bonnie was very communicative about getting there. She met us and helped us cart our stuff to the cottage. She showed us how the fireplace (and heater) worked. There was enough firewood inside the cottage to keep it crackling all night. She also pointed out the path to the open air, outdoor compost toilet. As well as the sauna and outdoor shower. We were bummed to miss out using the sauna as it was heating up and we could have popped in… but we accidentally fell asleep instead?!?! Best nap ever!! I highly recommend this cottage for a woodsy, relaxing stay to anyone that wants to escape and rest!

It is an awesome little cabin. I came here in the winter and nobody else was there so it was very peaceful. The only negative is the toilet etc is outside but again, it's camping with flair, so that's expected. The room inside the mush room hut was amazing and adorable. The woodburning stove really keeps it toasty even in the middle of January! I'll definitely be back!

The property was absolutely magical! Was much better to witness in person… pictures definitely don’t do justice. Was greeted upon arrival by Bonnie & a resident kitty & shown to our cabin. Was just the peaceful experience we needed. We also enjoyed the companionship of the resident kitties. Had a great time utilizing the outdoor kitchen. Everything was situated & decorated with perfect detail. We will most definitely return for another getaway!

Fairy tale structures with a connection to nature. The Mushroom was cozy and the bed very comfortable. The smell of cedar so lovely! We had everything we needed with the community kitchen and games. We played cards and corn hole. They even had hula hoops. There was a two seater composting toilet near our place and three flushing toilets up by the community kitchen and apple orchard. We even saw three deer having a nice apple meal! Great visit!

We loved staying here! We rented both the mushroom cabin & the stump house. We brought our 1 year old little guy & he had so much fun wandering around under the apple trees & spending time in the woods. We made dinner in the outdoor kitchen, walked around the property & enjoyed the amazing nature. The kitchen is stocked with pretty much everything you need to cook! Bonnie is an amazing host & we even got to meet her son - he was so sweet, too!!

First off, Bonnie is such a beautiful soul. She is such a great host who goes above and beyond I say. She’s very sweet and also accommodating. When we arrived later than expected and we heard about the outhouse situation, my partner who has autism voiced his concerns and discomfort/safety and she was more than understanding, and switched us to another one of the cabins. Not only was this one not listed, it was a bigger structure, with indoor plumping and a bunch of other upgrades, without charging more. She did not have to do all of that and I just think that is the coolest thing ever. The property is unlike any other. It’s so cool and just very shire. All the buildings were beyond cool, each with its own unique style and beauty. There is a really cool treehouse I’d suggest taking a look at. But also the other buildings, which I assume people actually live in, are very cool structures as well. Our tour guide was one of 2 very adorable pest control workers. All in all such a great property, with an amazing host, tucked a little bit away from city life. My partner wants to come back and had the most amazing company from the 2 cats that were fun to pet and enjoy our fire with. One of them even showed us around the property!!!

Wow! We felt like we were staying at an abandoned movie lot in the woods. The rain and wind knocked out the power in town but we stayed warm and cozy in the wee mushroom! There is a two seater open air composting toilet on stilts with a view. We dodged widow makers and pelting rain to experience this in the dark. What a fun adventure!!!
