The Space:
This primitive build has a natural way of connecting its guests to the simple pleasures of simpler times. Enjoy first-hand the awe-inspiring vistas, sunrises and long lingering sunsets, relaxation, and unpretentious hospitality of this cabin retreat.

This cabin was crafted by local polar explorer Lonnie Dupre and us, the owners.

At just over 300 sq ft this the cabin is both quaint and spacious boasting an open floor plan and cathedral ceiling.

Built for travelers seeking a retreat in a sustainable stay, we designed this cabin to offer all the necessities one would need in thoughtfulness of nature: wood-fired sauna, solar power for lighting and charging electronics, gas fireplace and stove, A-frame outhouse, rain barrels for wash water.

The inspiration for Great Northern Campo came from our time spent living in Argentina, which is where our story together began. Our hope is that travelers can enjoy the same serenity from nature in this rustic refuge that our journey’s brought us.

The interior has been thoughtfully curated with unique decor from Patagonia, Argentina and local Grand Marais artists.

FAQ:

Is this cabin for everyone — Not exactly… We want to be clear that this is an off-grid cabin that was meant to be used as a rustic retreat.

Is the bed upstairs — Yes. The bed is located in the high loft which can only be accessed by a steep ladder. Guests use at their own risk.

Is there Wifi or cell network service — There is some cell signal. Verizon tends to have much better reception than At&t or T-Mobile.
There is no wifi… some say for an even better connection :)

What is a “dry” cabin — This means you will be completely off-grid: solar-powered lighting & charging, plumbing free, outhouse, etc.

What about water — We provide drinking water in larger jugs May-October. Guests will need to bring any drinking or wash water November - April. We have rain barrels in summer months for collecting wash water. In winter snow can be melted for wash water.

What is your bathroom situation — We have an A-frame outhouse just next to the cabin. There is also an outdoor bucket shower May-Oct (see in photo gallery). Guests who would prefer a little more water pressure can consider visiting the Grand Marais Rec park for a $4 shower, or buy a $10 day-pass to the Grand Marais YMCA to take advantage of the gym, workout facility, showers, hot tub, sauna, and pool.

Do you have a coffee maker — We have a pour over and filters for your use.

Do you have a grill or fire pit — Yes, May through Oct. We have a charcoal BBQ. There is also a fire pit. Wood bundles can be bought in town. Guests are free to use fire pit year round but are responsible for snow removal to use it if they wish to do so.

How remote is the cabin — The cabin is easily accessed (approx. 300 ft) just off Hwy 61 on a maintained driveway. Your views are woods, nature & Lake Superior. While this cabin is completely private, there are neighbors several hundred feet through the woods. However, just as most cabins close to Lake Superior, you could have some road noise.

Winter Conditions:
We recommend AWD/4WD vehicle from Nov 1 to April 30. 2 wheel drive vehicles are free to use the parking at the bottom of the driveway (300ft from cabin). Due to plowing shortages we cannot guarantee that the road will be plowed on a daily basis.

We have 2 parking spots available at the bottom of the driveway in the case that guests are uncomfortable with driving the steep hill or that the conditions are unfavorable to do so. It is approximately a 300ft walk up to the cabin from the bottom of the driveway.

Pets
:
* Only one well-behaved and trained dog per cabin reservation is permitted, subject to an additional nightly fee. The dog must be over 12 months old and fully trained—no exceptions.

If your dog is likely to bark excessively or cause damage, we request that you leave them at home to help us continue offering dog-friendly accommodations. The credit card used for the reservation will be charged for any damages. If your dog exhibits excessive barking, disruptive behavior, we may ask you to leave without a refund and will not be allowed for future reservations.

* Ensure your dog is included in the reservation and that the pet fee is paid before arrival. Bringing a dog that is not listed on your reservation will result in a $250 fine in addition to the nightly pet rate.
* Dogs cannot be left alone in the cabin or on the property under any circumstances. We have wildlife in the area that is dangerous to dogs and can be fatal if left alone. If you’re unsure about your dog's behavior, please arrange for a pet sitter. Pet fees are non-refundable.
* Dogs are not allowed in lofted areas, beds, or furniture. Please remember to pack your dog’s cozy bed for their stay!
* Owners must clean up after their dogs and dispose of waste properly. Failure to do so will incur an additional fee.
* Clean your pet’s paws before entering the cabin.
* Dogs must be leashed at all times on the property—no exceptions. Keep your dogs under strict control at all times around the site and nearby in woods which has lots of wildlife.
* Any damage must be reported within 1 hour of arrival; otherwise, you will be held responsible. Items chewed on or destroyed will be replaced entirely at the guest’s expense.
* We’re pet friendly but also cleaner friendly! If cleaners have to clean pet waste, rid of strong odors or stains are left behind requiring an excessive amount of time, we will compensate them for their time at your expense.

Regarding Service Dogs and Emotional Support Animals: Emotional Support Animals differ from trained and registered service animals. Emotional Support Animals must comply with our pet rules and the pet fee must be paid. Service dogs are welcome without an additional fee. You will be asked two questions permitted by the ADA:

1. Is the dog a service animal required because of a disability
2. What work or task has the dog been trained to perform
Service animals must be harnessed, leashed, or tethered unless these devices interfere with the animal’s work or the disability prevents their use. In such cases, the animal must be under control through voice, signal, or other effective means and never left alone.

If a pet is misrepresented as a service animal, we may seek financial restitution, report fraudulent claims, and evict the guest without further notice, with no refund for the remaining stay.

Note that, as of 2022, both vacation rentals and airlines no longer recognize Emotional Support Animals as service animals. If you have an ESA, please book a pet-friendly property and pay the applicable fees.

What a lovely, cozy, serene, and dog friendly eco friendly cabin to relax at! The loft bed was super comfortable, the small kitchenette was perfect for making your own meals, the sauna was a great option to do some self care, followed by an outdoor shower! Campfires, stars galore and a great deck to enjoy facing Lake Superior! Always appreciate a dog friendly spot that charges a reasonable fee. My senior dog loved laying in the plush grass and on the deck surveying the land. Stevie was fabulous with timely communication and easy to follow explanation of property details. Highly recommend a stay at Campo!

Everything was exactly as described in the material. Juani and Stevie went beyond the expected, however, with cookies, drinks, natural lotions toiletries, etc. Juani promptly came to our assistance when I dropped my coffee on the rug. The place is less that 3 years old and well kept up with solar-powered lights. Everyone is forewarned that the place is off the grid, so be prepared to use an outhouse and to shower in another structure. Heating water for a hot shower is a pain, but part of the experience. I loved the bed in the loft, but my wife is afraid of heights (she came for 4 nights to prove her love). The grill and fire pit were great. Washing dishes is a pain, so we used paper plates and went out to eat often. The walk to the beach is wonderful, but the hike to Superior Hiking Trail was not clearly marked and overgrown with weeds and fallen trees. Didn't use the hammock, but stayed up late to watch for falling stars. The view of the lake is great with some highway noise. Many place along the North Shore to hike, eat, and tour. Overall, a great experience.

The cabin was beautiful and allowed us to have a low WiFi weekend away from the cities. We had plenty of chances to roam the town while still enjoying the nice deck and fire pit at the cabin.

It was fabulous. A simple place for a short stay. All the amenities are accurate and hosts are amazing with info and answering questions. Love the eco and practical approach to the cabin and kept it classy. Weather can be unpredictable so if you have a shelter bring it so it feels less cooped up.Gave location 4 stars, only because the driveway is marked by fire nunber with no flag or marker on hwy. We passed it due having aggressive drivers behind me and slowing down was unsafe. But the lake and cabin wonderful. It is worth a trip if you dont want to sleep on the ground and need a base to find your next adventure.

Every year I always book us a new place to stay on the North Shore for our annual trip. But I am positive we will be returning here again! The location doesn’t get better than this. The stars at night were remarkable. Cutest, coziest little cabin and our dog absolutely loved sleeping in front of the fireplace. The host was super easy to communicate with and clearly cares about making this trip memorable for you, even had some goodies for our dog waiting for us when we arrived. There is not one thing I can think of that could have been better!!

This area has always been a special place in our relationship. Spending out first trip/date in Grand Marais we knew we wanted to get back up there for our anniversary. This little rustic cabin was WAY better than we could have expected it to be. 100% recommend it, and when we make it back up to that area this will be on the short list of places we'll be considering.
