This Dogtrot Cabin was built in the 1860's and restored to its original glory and then some. Updated for modern day living, this log home features two queen bedrooms upstairs, and a large full bath on the main floor, as well as two fireplaces(one working) and a full kitchen with seating for four. The living room is very cozy with fireplace and rockers. Granny's feather stuffed sofa will make you feel like you have gone back in time. There are sitting areas and period furniture throughout the cabin for quiet reading and conversation nooks or just relaxing. Out back there is a beautiful stone patio with a grill, picnic table and furniture. In the front is a shady porch for viewing the sunset or enjoying morning coffee or an afternoon beverage in the shade.
We welcome up to four guests per night. Dogtrot log houses are rare; This home was built by an African American man from New York after the Civil War. Originally it had two chimneys, one of which collapsed years ago and now there sits an addition in its place with a full bathroom. The other chimney is fully restored and lined for use today. The landscaping is in keeping with traditional plantings of the era with a few extras. We even have a few artifacts to show from the excavation of the patio and old fireplace foundation.
There are plenty of trails to explore on our farm on foot or mountain bike. The main house is 400 feet up the hill where we welcome visitors and enjoy meeting our guests! You can pick up the keys there.
There is a campsite which can accommodate up to 10 people in 2 tents or 2 RV's. Power, water and a porta-potty included for extra fee if available. Contact owner for more information.
Our family includes four friendly dogs and three cats that might come down for a visit if you're outside and love to go on walks around the property.
This property is quite unique and cozy, and we are sure it will satisfy your outdoor getaway needs! At the end of the road, traffic is well, there is none other than us.

It was amazing to be in the countryside. My grandson and I spent a lot of quality time without the “noise”
We had a great time staying at the Dogtrot cabin! The cabin was comfortable and the setting was soo relaxing. Suzy was a wonderful host and her love of the place shines through. We hope to return again.
We had a great time staying at this authentic and modernized mountain cabin. The kids loved the quiet surroundings with excellent restaurants within a 15 minute drive. Farm dogs were wonderful! They would great my children each morning. Suzy was great. She responded to my every message. An incredible and relaxing stay.
This was our second visit to the Historical Dogtrot Chestnut Log Cabin and it was as wonderful as the first. This is such a beautiful area and the history of the cabin make it a truly unique experience. The owner is kind, generous and truly loves the property and hosting guests which only makes it better.
WE loved this little place in this historic house. The house was nicely refurbished, with added modern conveniences, There wasn’t TV to watch, but that is exactly what we wanted for our getaway. We liked the fact that we could have wi-if to look up local attractions. The house has split unit heating and air in the rooms, so we could adjust temperatures as needed. New modern bathroom was very nice. There isn’t much privacy as we could hear what our friends were saying and talking about, so if you are traveling with friends, be aware that the house doesn’t have much sound insulation. This only added to the charm for us. Decor was vey true to the style of the house and the beds and large comfy couch were nice perks. Outside is a nice fire pit for enjoying being outside at night. Quiet and calm. There are friendly rescue dogs on the property that come to visit and hang out. Our friend had brought her dog along and he had a blast exploring the property and interacting with the owner’s dogs. There was a slight mixup about when we were to arrive, but that was addressed right away and fixed. The owner was very friendly and helpful, we enjoyed visiting with her and she even brought us a delicious home made dessert one night that was perfect. As far as the area goes, there isn’t much to do unless you are willing to take a little drive, but that didn’t bother us as we were just there to escape and relax. There is a nice hiking trail on the property.
The cabin was historic with upgrades, peaceful setting, sounds of nature all around. Nice place to get away.
From the moment we were welcomed to this cozy cabin with plenty of firewood for the indoor and outdoor fires, we enjoyed exploring around outdoors as well as the nooks and crannies
Southern hospitality at its Best with a wonderful welcoming committee! Suzy's attention to detail is like no other! Cozy and comfy cabin with all the amenities that you need to relax into nature. Acres and acres of trails to delight 2 and 4 legged explorers with fantastic guides; Dez, Remy & Ellie. We enjoyed our first visit so much that we returned for 10 nights this time around - will definitely return again. Our deepest loving appreciation Suzy for all that you share!
This is our third time visiting, and we always love the time to disconnect a bit and just be with our family. The cabin is just great with it's historic presence combined with some modernizations. We enjoy hiking around the property with our dog and with Suzy's dogs leading the way for us We love coming here.
Thoroughly enjoyed our stay! Cabin was clean and had all the basic necessities. Could use a microwave and a full size refrigerator, but otherwise well-appointed. The cabin and its history were very interesting. Host was helpful and easy to communicate with. Would definitely stay again.
Had a perfect get away. The cabin was beautiful and very clean.
A beautiful cabin in a great location.
We had a wonderful stay in this cozy cabin. Suzy was an EXCELLENT host and went above and beyond to be welcoming and helpful. Her communication prior to arrival was wonderful and a great help as we were traveling up during Tropical Storm Ian for a wedding. The cabin was great and we loved sleeping with the rain on the tin roof. My kids enjoyed all the treats Suzy left for us in the cabin. Beds were very comfortable! We will have to return when the weather is better and we can really enjoy the area!
We had a wonderful time this past weekend. The peace and quiet was fantastic. The dog had a great time running around and investigating. We enjoyed cooking dinner on the grill and relaxing on the patio. Thank you for your hospitality!!
This is a great place to. Everything was just perfect. Suzy (host) is wonderful. She really keeps the place stocked with all your necessities. Wonderful location and the 1860s cabin is amazing. They have done a unbelievable job restoring it. Will definitely stay there again and HIGHLY recommend it!! John
The property is amazing. The owner was so welcoming and kind, and the dogs were so sweet. Overall, a great place to stay!
This is an exceptional property. The location is out of the way enough to give you the opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty of the area, yet close enough to enjoy the many wineries, breweries, cideries and tons of activities and events in the local communities. My husband and I enjoyed a quiet getaway, but this property would also be ideal for two couples or a family. The cabin is beautifully restored - the charm and history remain with just enough modern amenities to make things easy and convenient. The owner is charming and responsive; directions and instructions were detailed and accurate. Would recommend arriving first time in daylight - country road might be a little daunting in the dark. Once you have seen it once, though, it is easy and the road is well maintained. We had a terrific time. Highly recommend!
We had a great anniversary weekend spent at Susanna's cabin. Susanna was easy to communicate with, and did a great job preserving the cabin. We did several things in the area, including trails and visiting the Oakland House in Nelson County.
Everything was perfect. Couldn't of asked for a better place to stay a weekend at.
Had a wonderful weekend with the family in this amazing cabin. Our children had a ton of fun exploring the property and enjoyed the comfy beds. There is a lot of love put into this rental!
