Stayed Apr 13, 2026The property is lovely with a great location. I know the owner has big plans to renovate so it should only get better. We had issues with the keys and the door handles which made entry and exit quite tricky. That should be resolved soon. Also the second story patio and garden were not as we expected, though again I think the owner has plans for that area as well. Overall a comfortable stay and the location is the best!

Stayed Apr 3, 2026Great communication from Jeff! He was more than willing to help us with anything we needed during our stay! Location of the house was great - a block or two away from the beach, restaurants, and Moxi Museum! Beds and pillows were super comfy! Just keep in mind that the house is very old and is in need of some updates, which Jeff was honest about from the beginning!

Stayed Mar 26, 2026This review is for new owner, Jeff. Booked for 3 nights, only stayed 1 night. First issue, we were given an incorrect code for the lockbox in the VRBO check in message. Called owner and received correct code to get keys. Then, hot water was not working at all. Called owner and said he would send someone out to fix first thing in the morning. No one came until after 1pm. Jeff told me through multiple texts prior to the hot water being fixed: If you wanna find another place, I understand and will definitely credit you your money and for last night.; I think you should look for another place. I can't guarantee it. It'll be fixed by three. I'll refund all of your money.; I think you should booked another place and trust me that we'll figure out the cost and fees and what not I'll refund 100% of your money. Booked another place and told Jeff we would be checking out that afternoon, which we did. Called VRBO to make sure this was documented on their end and not just through texts with Jeff. When VRBO tried to call the owner to confirm a full refund, the owner did not answer VRBO's call and Jeff instead called me yelling at me and berating me over the phone for involving VRBO and saying he would not give a full refund if he doesn't have to now.Called VRBO to follow up on refund and Jeff told them he would refund only 2 nights. Have not yet received my refund. Terrible host!

Stayed Mar 12, 2026The house is very cute with tons of potential. The check in was a little tricky, but we got it figured out. The only complaint I had is that the coffee pot did not work. The owner did say he's replacing it but that didn't help us while we were there. Luckily there were tons of coffee shops walkable from the house. Great location! Would stay there again as the owner says he is doing a major renovation and upgrade.

Stayed Feb 21, 2026The location is about as good as you can get—quick walk to the beach, where you then can walk along the shoreline, which I did every day! Nice big kitchen, comfortable bed, plenty of towels.Jeff was a great host—very accommodating and accessible.

Stayed Jan 1, 2026We had a wonderful stay at this beautiful Santa Barbara property. Nestled along Mission Creek, the home carries a historic charm that’s hard to find, and the bones of the house are truly special. The location is ideal—close to the beach and within easy reach of everything State Street and the Funk Zone have to offer, yet still peaceful and tucked away. There was a transition of ownership during our stay, and while things were initially a bit confusing with the previous owners, the new owner, Jeff, reached out right away and did everything he could to make the process smooth. His communication was clear and thoughtful, which we really appreciated. After our stay, Jeff followed up with us to ask about our experience, gather feedback, and talk through suggestions for improvements. His openness to ideas and genuine interest in making the property even better was well above and beyond what we’ve experienced elsewhere.Jeff also shared that updates are already planned, and with such a beautiful foundation and an owner who truly cares, we’re excited to see how the home evolves. We look forward to returning and are grateful for the attentive, proactive communication from the new owner.

Stayed Dec 9, 2025This location is very convenient to all of the East Beach restaurants and the beach itself. The hosts were very helpful in trying to help us find keys, troubleshoot, etc. while they were away, they were still available via phone. They also supplied beach, chairs and towels, which was a great bonus for us. The wicker chairs on the front porch were our favorite hangout spot. Thank you for all that you did for us while we were there.

Stayed Aug 4, 2025We had a wonderful visit to Santa Barbara and loved staying in Unit 1 of the Chapala Gardens! Every day we enjoyed coffee on the front porch and a glass of wine in the evening on the beautiful rooftop garden. The hosts were incredibly welcoming and helpful. They quickly responded to any questions we had and it was a seamless experience. The kitchen is well maintained with everything you need to prepare a meal and the location is ideal for walking to the beach or to restaurants. We look forward to returning!

Stayed Jun 21, 2025Beautiful house in convenient location. We didn’t need to use our car as everything is walkable. Parking is a bit of an issue as there is no private parking and there are restrictions for on-street parking at weekends and Wednesday mornings. The house is well equipped with everything you could need.

Stayed Sep 28, 2024We loved our stay at Chapala Gardens. The location is perfect…close walk to the beach or State street. The accommodations were clean and as advertised. The rooftop garden stole the show. My wife and I ended up fixing dinner at home on 3 of our five nights because the rooftop was the best location in town. We also ate breakfast up there each morning. Sandy was an excellent host.
