The location of the property is the best! 2 min walk to the beach, short walk to all the restaurants and stores. Barbara Skinner is a great host, she tried to accommodate us the best she could.
We very much enjoyed our stay at this apartment in Cape May. The location was excellent – a short walk to the beach, the Washington Street Mall (an outdoor area with numerous shops and restaurants), and the local grocery store - and the owner was extremely nice and helpful. The unit is the back apartment in one side of a very large ‘twin house” where the front part is also rented out and the owners live in the other side of the house. There are lots of nice porches and a small, shaded yard with a patio (where one can barbecue) and plants (and frequent visits by frogs, which was one of the highlights for our daughter). The house is certainly old and ‘rustic’, and had some additions and alterations such that some of the floors are angled, and the furniture is quite old. That might not be for everyone. It is very airy, with high ceilings and lots of windows and screen doors. The bedrooms are upstairs (stairs might have been a slightly steeper than in a modern house but not by much – wasn’t a problem at all) and quite roomy. The bathroom is off of one of the bedrooms, which is a bit of a disadvantage as one needs to go through that room to use the bathroom, but the bathroom is also spacious and airy with an old fashion claw-foot tub and a shower stall. The owner was very friendly and super helpful throughout our one week stay.
This apartment is charming and very comfortable, quiet, close to the beach and walking mall. The balcony/porches are very pleasant and there is sufficient separation of bedrooms from the rest of the apartment to have privacy within the apartment. It was clean and in good repair. The mattresses were great. There is an outdoor shower for use after being at the beach. The washer/dryer were convenient and easy to use. I found Barbara Skinner very pleasant and helpful. We arrived very late and she accommodated us very gracefully. When I return to Cape May, this is my first choice for a rental.
This rental is in a great location and off the street so quiet with off street parking. It was extremely convenient to the beaches and the walking mall. The apartment is part of a Victorian house and has a lot of character, and is very pleasant with good cross ventilation and balconies/porches for private reading, etc. The landlady was wonderful, getting it ready for us because we arrived so late in the evening. It will be my first choice upon returning to Cape May.
Since the early 60's my family and I have had the pleasure of staying at one of the Skinner properties and I have never been disappointed and I have never been disappointed with the amenties provided. These historic properties have a charm and timelessness that can be found nowhere else. This is particularly true considering they are only half a block from the beach. For the last two weeks I have been staying in the Garden Apartment which is light, airy, spacious and without any annoying characteristics that the prior reviewer crabbed about. Parking is an issue in Cape May so I choose to park in the street and ride my bicycle. The furniture indoor and out is clean and antique as well! The kitchen is perfectly fine and I found none of the shortages that the other reviewer felt to complain about. The staircase while perhaps steep has substantial handrails, and a child's gate at the head of the stairs. Furthermore there are not one but two decks from which to enjoy the ocean breezes, freshly painted patio furniture on the ground level which provides an inviting place to sit and chat. Overall I would recommend this to anyone visitng Cape May.ed
There are no pictures of the kitchen or bath online for a reason. The kitchen is way beyond antique, with a water heater in the corner masked by a broken trellis & fake ivy. The floor is so slanted that things roll out of the fridge. The kitchen has no usable counter space for preparation and is poorly equipped by comparison with other units I have rented. The bathroom has a sink from the late 1800's--the only place I have ever seen such a thing is in an unrennovated brownstone in Brooklyn--cracked marble with iron stains all over it. The shower is a small, old, metal stall with a door that does not close properly. The steps to the upstairs bedrooms (& where the bath is located) are so steep that a child or someone with a hip, respiratory or cardiac problem would have difficulty negotiating them. The larger bedroom has a musty odor--and this at the end of an unusually dry/hot summer. Although the ad indicates a a washer as part of the amenities, it fails to mention that while it is on premises (housed outside in the original outhouse), you must pay to use it. The outside of the rental is as run down as the inside: brown leaves all over, weeds, overgrown ivy and dirty patio furniture. One parking space is included in the rental, in an area carved out of the property. Unfortunately, 2 other renters from the main house must park there as well and the area is not large enough to fit 3 cars comfortably. Be prepared to jockey your car back and forth over a dozen times to get in/out of a spot. The only positive thing I can say about this rental is that it is in a good location 1/2 block from the beach.
