Cape May’s most photographed home, the John B McCreary House (the “Abbey”) built in 1869 for a wealthy Coal baron in the Gothic Revival style influenced by the great medieval churches of Europe is located at the historic district’s heart one block from town and the beach. The home will be undergoing extensive renovations this spring, with a new double height ceiling kitchen with a fireplace, new bathrooms, restored floors and a professional décor update to CapeMay’s most spectacular home. Watch the horse drawn carriages go by from shaded porches and verandas and enjoy the use of a lawn large enough for small weddings on a extensive property with room for up to 10 cars right in the middle of downtown Cape May.

The amenities were in great condition and we loved that the Christmas decorations were still up.

We had an amazing family vacation in Cape May staying at the Abbey! There was plenty of room for everyone and great that each bedroom had an en suite bathroom. Everything we needed was supplied at the house. Sitting on the porch was relaxing in the evening. The Abbey is so convenient walking to the Washington Mall and going to the beach. We would highly recommend the Abbey for a group vacation!

We celebrated my mother’s 80th birthday here, and there was plenty of room for the 10 of us. The renovation was beautifully done, and you can’t beat the location. Truly wonderful and the owner was very responsive. The furniture and finishes were antique, but with a luxurious modern twist in just the right places. My only recommendation would be for them to change out the antique chairs in the dining areas because they are not sturdy enough, and some of the doors to the rooms did not close properly. However, these were very minor issues given the rest of the experience we had.

We rented the Abbey over the Easter weekend and we had a wonderful time. We were 11 adults (2 families with grown-up children and their spouses) and there was plenty of room for everybody. The house is beautifully decorated with antique furniture and all the 8 (!) bathrooms have been recently remodeled. We did a lot of cooking on the fancy La Cornue stove and we much appreciated the double oven, the big refrigerator and the 2 dishwashers. We never had to use our cars (that we parked in the large off-the-street parking lot) since the house sits in a perfect location walking distance from the beach and the pedestrian shopping area on Washington street. We’ll go back!

This is a really unique, beautiful, historic home in an amazing location. This was our 3rd time staying here and we love the house and the proximity to everything. We parked our cars and walked almost everywhere. Thank you, Jake!

The moment you arrive at this home you will be in awe. The amount of thought and detail that went into the design of this space really takes the experience to the next level. Before we left, we had to go through and look at every room one more time. The outdoor space is magical and there is ample parking for a large group. We had a private chef come to the house one night and it was wonderful. The bathrooms are so nice and very clean. If you get a chance to stay in this home you must… you’ll never forget it!

Spectacular house close to the beach and shopping. We couldn’t have wished for a nicer place to stay. The kitchen in particular became the hangout room where all 13 of us could sit comfortably and socialize for hours on end.
