Stewartstown, Pennsylvania
Rolling farmland, quiet country roads, and a park-like wooded setting create the perfect spot for a relaxing stay. Enjoy this comfortable in-law suite while visiting York and Lancaster counties.
This apartment attached to our home has a private entrance leading to an open dining and living room area. The futon in the living room converts to a full-size bed, suitable for one adult or two children. The large kitchen is thoroughly equipped with a full size refrigerator, electric stove, dishwasher and microwave. Complete sets of dishes, glasses, utensils and cookware are provided. A half bath completes the first level.
The wide stairway to the second level opens up to a large bedroom with two twin beds, dressers and a seating area. Although open to the stairs, the bedroom is situated to provide visual privacy from the first level. Off the bedroom is a full bath, a laundry room with washer and dryer, and a linen closet. The sleeping arrangements are ideal for couples, three adults, or parents with one or two children who can use the futon. One friendly dog is welcome if it meets the weight limits and breed restrictions set by our insurer.
Outside, the residence is surrounded by woods and set back from the quiet country road. The neighbors houses can be seen through the trees, but are not too close. If you like taking long walks without having to deal with traffic headaches this is a great location. Traffic is very light, and some days it seems there are more tractors and farm equipment than cars. If you time your stay right, you may see the Amish buggy that passes by every week or so. About the only negative aspect of being so far out in the country is the lack of broadband internet. Although you won't be able to participate in an online gaming marathon or run a multi-national corporation remotely, the 5G signal is good, so mobile devices will work fine.
Located about 3 miles away is the small borough of Stewartstown. This tiny town has a barbecue joint, a couple of pizza places, a homey country restaurant, a busy walk-up ice cream shop, a Chinese takeout, a small bakery specializing in sweets, and a brewery with food trucks. There is a nice local grocery store, a couple of gas station/convenience stores, and a chain drug store. The town park is well-maintained with ball fields, a playground, and picnic tables. Having a fascinating history, the park is on the site of a World War 2 Prisoner of War camp for German soldiers who were assigned to help local farmers while many of our men were off fighting the war. The Stewartstown Railroad Company boasts a historic train station, and train excursions on some local miles of track.
A few miles beyond Stewartstown, near the intersection of Interstate 83 is the larger town of Shrewsbury. Mainline retailers, grocery stores, and chain restaurants are near the highway, but the historic town has a collection of local eateries and shops as well. Should you tire of enjoying rural surroundings, the city of York PA is about a 30-minute drive from this property, and Lancaster PA is about 45 minutes away. Because we are located not far from the Maryland line, the city of Baltimore is about 45 minutes South.
Gayle's place was the perfect complement to my weekend getaway. It's spacious, clean, comfortable, and quietly set in the middle of PA farm country. I would absolutely recommend it to others, and I hope I have the opportunity to return in the future.
