The Neighborhood:
The Old Town has preserved its medieval plan and many Reformation-era buildings. One end is closed by the castle, and the main artery, The High Street (or the Royal Mile) leads away from it; minor streets (called closes or wynds) bud off the main spine in a herringbone pattern. Large squares mark the location of markets or surround major public buildings such as St Giles Cathedral and the Law Courts. Other notable places of interest nearby include the Royal Museum of Scotland, the Surgeons' Hall, the Royal Festival Theatre, and the University of Edinburgh. The street layout, typical of the old quarters of many northern European cities, is made especially picturesque in Edinburgh, where the castle perches on top of a rocky crag, the remnants of a dormant volcano, and the main street runs down the crest of a ridge from it

● There is no free parking space at the property. However, there are paid options nearby.

The unit is in an historic apartment building on the ground floor. Initial entry is through a metal gate, then unit entry is from a courtyard. The living room windows are a little above street level, which allows for watching all the action outside. There is a view of the castle from the bedroom, but we kept the drapes closed due to apartment residents walking by regularly. The bedroom drapes need upgrading to blackout to combat the light in the hall shining into the bedroom all night. The double-paned windows in the living room keep street noise to a minimum, but expect noise into the wee hours. Everywhere in Old Town is loud except for maybe the hotels. (Our second apartment in the West End was quieter.) Haymarket square and Victoria Street are two blocks away. Appreciated the coffee press in the kitchen. Free TV was great for catching British news. I would give the apartment a higher rating if it were more reasonably priced.

Upon entry to the complex the first thing you see is 4 LARGE , mostly overflowing dumpsters. The picture provided of the flat is not accurate. The furniture is extremely dated and very uncomfortable - the couches are akin to sitting on a board. The carpets are thread bear and curling up in places. The kindest thing I can say: it was right off Grass Market Sq., so lots of places to eat and pubs to visit. Would not stay there again.

There was no street given after the name of the block of flats on the info, and the post code takes you somewhere 5 minutes away, so had to call to find my way. Could not get the entry code to the main gates to work but luckily as I was being guided by a guy on the phone anyway, got the right one). The smell of damp hits you as you open the door. Inside it’s clean and nice even if no bath mat and no curtain on the kitchen window which is right on main corridor to block. It’s also right on street level on the other side, so basically no privacy front or back unless close the curtains. Great location, it’s clean, and inside all is provided, but don’t think will be returning.
