Oak Harbor, Washington
Welcome to my 100 year old Whidbey Island farmhouse a quarter mile from the beach! The property is surrounded by wide open grassy farm and pasture land. We have bright sunrises behind the barns up the field to the east and beautiful sunsets over the trees and at the beach to the west. It's on the north end of Whidbey Island, about 2 miles from the main entrance to Deception Pass State Park. There is plenty of space for the whole family to experience Pacific Northwest living at it's best.
The house is on the northern end of Whidbey Island, well within the Olympic rain shadow that allows us to have less rainfall than most of western Washington. It's a few miles south of Deception Pass Bridge and the main gate to the state park. The public beach 1/4 mile down the road, Moran Beach, is a 6 minute walk and has views of the Olympic Mountains, Vancouver Island, the San Juan Islands and the endless horizon.
The property is spacious, cozy and relaxing. There is plenty of parking in the driveway and carport and the large fenced in yard is great for keeping the kids and dog safely having a good time. The covered porch has a nice sitting area for any time of day.
The house has two large bedrooms with a king and queen sized bed and a smaller bedroom with bunk beds. The kitchen is well stocked and you should be able to cook most meals with ease here. The breakfast nook is cozy and bright and a great place for smaller meals or just relaxing with a cup of coffee. The dining room is open and airy and the table seats six and probably more with a squeeze. In the living room is a 65" TV with soundbar and most streaming services. The sofa and lounge chair are comfy and the fireplace is warm and hypnotizing.
The original, main bathroom has a large shower and vanity and I just converted an under utilized closet off the primary bedroom into another cute little shower bathroom. There is no tub (that’s the next project).
At the side of the house past the kitchen is the washer and dryer and small office space with a sit/stand desk. Just outside beyond the garage is the pool table room.
LOCATION:
The location is a great home base to explore and enjoy the endless activities in the surrounding region. The sandy beach down the road is a 6 minute walk and is perfect for a morning coffee stroll or sunset viewing. There is one neighbor across the corner whose chickens and ducks you might hear but otherwise we are surrounded by empty fields.
Just down the road, Deception Pass State Park has fishing, lake swimming, miles of beaches, trails and epic viewpoints on both sides of the bridge. Cornet Bay is a few miles away with 3 boat launches and a public dock and is a nice spot to start a kayak trip or drop crab pots. The Anacortes ferry to the San Juan Islands and Vancouver Island is 20 minutes north. The Keystone Ferry to Pt. Townsend and the Olympic Peninsula is 30 minutes south. Historic Ft. Casey is next to the Keystone Ferry. There are tons of smaller, hidden gems too I can point you towards.
The town of Oak Harbor is closest and has more big box stuff, Walmart, fast food, Safeway and Haggen for groceries. Anacortes to the north and Coupeville further south of Oak Harbor have more in the way of fine dining and cute, touristy downtown strips.
Vancouver BC is about 2 hours north and Seattle is about 1.5 hours south. Great weekend trip distance for either city.
THINGS TO NOTE:
-Please keep in mind this is a 100 year old farmhouse. Its cozy, rustic, minimal but comfy, not lux. I love it and everything works but there are little creaks and quirks that give it character and charm.
-I just refinished the original wood floors and installed new wood flooring in parts of the house myself. That was a challenging but rewarding project and I ask that you please remove your shoes in the house. I recommend bringing slippers to wear inside and bringing some easy on/off shoes that you can get in and out of going to and from outside. Thanks in advance ;)
-Whidbey Island is located in the Olympic rain shadow, so its decently sunnier here than a lot of western Washington. This lead the US Navy to build a base here 80 years ago with an airport and they do fly in and out for training, etc. The runway is several miles away and you can hear and see jets flying occasionally. Some people love it while some people can be sensitive to the jet noise. After growing up on North Whidbey, I don't even really notice the jets, but it is something to consider if you are especially sensitive to noise. Every flight is different depending on the aircraft and distance, but I would say typically it's quieter than a train driving by, for comparison. Some call it "The Sound of Freedom" haha ;)
-The beach down the road is awesome! It's sandy with driftwood and there are often crazy colorful sunsets. It is a public beach, however on both sides it is bordered by houses that have private rights to the beach directly in front of their house. There's enough space to feel comfortable and enjoy yourself at the public portion, but please respect the neighbors. If you want a bigger beach experience, there's about a mile long strip of the same west facing beach further north in Deception Pass State Park.
-The house is surrounded by our neighbors' acres of quiet farm and pasture land, but the actual land attached to the house is pretty clearly marked by fences. It's about 1/3 of an acre in total. Plenty of space but please respect the boundaries of the adjacent neighbors.
-I just had a refurbished 3 piece slate pool table with brand new felt put in the rec room next to the garage. Please NO DRINKS ON THE TABLE to prevent spills (its a sacred rule in the pool world!). There is plenty of space for drinks on the shelf in the corner. Also the guy installing it spent a lot of time leveling it so please try to avoid bumping the table or otherwise moving it to keep it level. Thanks!
-The house is out in the country as you can see, so we are on a septic system and private well. You may see hard water marks on glass dishes or around the sink but the water is perfectly fine. We run it through a Brita filter but also provide bottled water if you'd like to drink that. Please go easy on the toilet and only flush toilet paper.
-No smoking in house or pool table room. Feel free outside but please properly dispose of butts in the trash, especially during fire season.
-No shoes inside house
-No drinks on the pool table
-No parties or additional guests. There is only one bathroom and we are on a septic system. Please message me if you have a special situation and would like to discuss.
Enjoyed our stay. Terrill was a great communicator. No surprises. House was very comfortable and great for our short stay.
We stayed here for a long vacation with the family (Grandma, three adult siblings, and two kids) and even got to bring the dogs! The house was perfectly cozy, was decorated beautifully, and provided access to all the great things that Whidbey Island has to offer! The yard is fully fenced, so it's great for dogs, and the beach is a quick (and beautiful) walk away. Terrill was considerate and straightforward and made everything we needed easily available. Definitely would recommend!
My wife and son (teen) joined me for a long weekend on Whidbey Island. We explored Deception Pass State Park, and we visited Anacortes and Friday Harbor, San Juan Islands. The kitchen was great for making breakfast - thanks for the farm-fresh eggs in the fridge. With Anacortes and Oak Harbor short drives away, we dined out otherwise. The beds were comfortable, the one bathroom was perfect for the three of us, and the streaming options on the TV were great. We enjoyed the short walk to the beach. The jets from NAS Whidbey Island were quiet over the weekend, and didn't fly until Monday morning.
My group (two couples) was looking for a getaway that was versatile. We wanted ro relax but wanted to be able to do a day trip or two if the mood struck. This place was perfect. The front porch was just the place for breakfast and morning reading. We made the short trip to the beach each night to take in the amazing sunsets. Some of us golfed, some of us kayaked at Cranberry Lake. It was a vacation I'll never forget. Terrill was very responsive to answer questions and checked in by text to make sure we had no questions or problems. Comfortable beds, good floor plan, and nice streaming setup if the weather doesnt cooperate. I highly recommend this property. Bring beach chairs and/or beach blankets because missing the sunsets would be missing a lot.
Our family rented this house for a trip to whidbey to explore Deception Pass, Coupeville and Langley. This house was super for our family. Beds were comfortable, house was clean, area was quiet, kitchen was well stocked, towels and linens were good. This house is awesome for dogs too as it has a fenced yard. House had games for kids and worked really well for our family. We only wished we had more time there to use the fire pit, grill and play billiards. Walk to the beach was quick and easy, and we saw some incredible sunsets.
