THE FARMHOUSE IS NOT ON LAKE GASTON, BUT IT'S ONLY A MILE AWAY.
The Isle of Rest was once a 4,000 acre working farm originally built around 1810. The main house burned down after being struck by lightening and the current home was completed in 1865. The property was divided into two parcels by the family in the mid 1920's. Most of the land was sold to developers in the 1950's when Lake Gaston was formed by damming the Roanoke River. The homestead was lived in until 1973 when the matriarch of the family passed away. Her heirs allowed the land to sit for thirty years and fall into disrepair. I purchased the homestead and 25 acres in 2005 and set off to restore the grand old house. My family and I use it as a weekend getaway throughout the year and stay for a week several times during the summer. We put the boat in down the street at Holly Creek Marina, shoot skeet, take nature walks, enjoy the deer and other wildlife, and just relax. We recently decided to try renting the house out to help with the expenses and to share the wonderful setting with others. If you are a nature lover, reader, writer, boater, hunter or all the above you will really enjoy staying at the Isle of Rest. We have allowed two weddings and two business retreats to use the property and everyone loved it. Events, like a wedding, will be charged the weekly rate regardless of number of days on the property.

I truly enjoyed the property.
Our family had an awesome 5 days at the Isle of Rest. It was nice to read the historical information about the property in a binder that was set up for guests. The house is extremely spacious. Plenty of room for all. The property and pond were well maintained and beautiful. The back screened porch was lovely to sit out on in the evenings and during the rain we had while there. Will definitely go back.
We needed a retreat during a stressful week. Isle of Rest felt like home. We are so grateful for the opportunity to have stayed in such a welcoming place and thank you Adam for being the perfect host.
We were looking for a place to get away from it all for a few days, just the three of us and our dog. When we arrived, we were pleasantly surprised by this hidden gem. The house is historic, beautiful, clean, spacious, and very comfortable. The A/C and wifi were fantastic. Overall, the grounds are lovely. We spent a lot of time at the pond fishing (catch & release), hanging out with the ducks, kayaking, watching deer from the front porch, reading in the multiple hammocks, making s'mores, and playing darts on the back porch. We brought our groceries and prepared all of our food at the house. Everything we needed was there (big bonus was the crockpot for BBQ pulled chicken). We had a fantastic time and plan to come back.
Beautiful house and property with deer, fish in the pond and plenty of bedrooms for a large group!
Great house. Adam was very accommodating and the property was in wonderful condition. We would stay again!
The stay was really amazing, very big house, a lot of space to explore. The owner was awesome he checked in making sure we were having a great time. The house was beautiful and would recommend it to anyone. Two thumbs up.
Beautiful home on private estate. Lots of interesting history. Owner was very accommodating. Sent a text to make sure we found the house and had everything we needed the first night. Was very open to make sure we were comfortable, which we were. We will come back for a longer stay.
It was peaceful and very close to the lake. It had everything we needed. Loved the pond and the dogs enjoyed every minute. We have an amazing time. Thank you
We had a wonderful time and loved the house and property. I would definitely recommend this property. We all wish we could have stayed longer. The only negative was a lack of a toaster in the kitchen. We loved our time there. Thank you Adam!
