Background, General Information and Weather in Sanibel, Florida –
Sanibel is both an island and city found in Lee County, Florida. The population here at the time of the 2010 census was 6,469. The population only increased slightly in 2012 when a local survey was taken. At that time the population here was 6,741. As of the most recent non census related survey taken the population had increased slightly with roughly 7,351 residents. Sanibel is part of the Cape Coral – Fort Myers, Florida Metro Statistical Area. Sanibel is often referred to as “Sanibel Island” and is what is known as a barrier island. A barrier island is essentially a coastal landform and a type of dune system that is known for being exceptionally flat or lumpy with areas of sand that were formed by wave and tidal action just parallel to the mainland coast. These types of islands usually occur in chairs. Most times there are a few of these islands but there are some instances where there are more than a dozen of them. Most of the city is located at the east end of Sanibel Island. This city was incorporated back in 1974. Sanibel is extremely easy to access which makes it a very popular tourist destination. This area is known for its shell beaches as well as wildlife refuges. One of the most interesting things about Sanibel is that more than half of the island is made up of wildlife refuges. According to the United States Census Bureau, Sanibel is a total of 33.25 square miles with 16.12 of that being water. When it comes to the weather here in Sanibel it falls into the category of “Humid Subtropical.” This means that the summer months will be long, hot and wet where as the winter months will be very short, extremely comfortable but windy. Throughout the course of the year you can expect to see temperatures range from the mid 50s through the mid 90s. The hot season here lasts for four and a half months. From the end of May until the beginning of October the daily average high is just about 86 degrees. The low for this time is a very breezy 77 degrees. The warmest time of the year here is in August when the daily average high is about 90 degrees. The cool season on the other hand lasts for less than three months. From mid December until the beginning of March the daily average high is the same as the low for the summer months coming in at 77 degrees. The low for this time is a somewhat chilly 57 degrees. The coolest time of the year here is mid-January. Sanibel receives close to 60 inches of rain per year and absolutely no snow. This is the perfect place to retire if you looking for a city with gorgeous weather year round.

Sanibel Public Library –
The Sanibel Public Library was built back in 1994 and was a whopping 19,000 square feet at that time. In 2004 this public library was expanded adding an additional 10,386 square feet which brought the grand square feet total to just under 30,000. Here you will find more than 60,000 books. This library is also a charter member of the Southwest Florida Library Network. If you were looking to escape the beaches for some peace and quiet, this is the place to do it. Most people typically spend several hours here exploring all this massive library has to offer.

Fun Things to do in Sanibel –
Blind Pass Beach is somewhat off the beaten path but is worth the trek. This small beach is the perfect place to find tons of shells that have washed ashore. But make sure you are careful near the water since the current is pretty strong and swimming is not encouraged at this beach. Most people usually come here to tan and collect shells. If you were looking to take a break from all the tanning and shell collecting you can take a trip over to the 5,200 acre J.N Darling National Wildlife Refuge. This place is a must see regardless if you live here or are vacationing here. This wildlife refuge was founded by an editorial cartoonist from Iowa and is now home to hundreds of animals. Here you will find crocodiles, several different kinds of birds as well as the endangered giant manatees.
