Baytown can be found within Harris County with portions extending into Chambers County in the Gulf Coast region. This portion of Texas is located within the Houston – The Woodlands – Sugar Land Metro Area. You will find that Baytown lies on the Northern side of the Galveston Bay complex right near the outlets of the San Jacinto River and Buffalo Bayou. Baytown is the 6th largest city within the Metro Area. When the 2010 census was taken the population here was 71,802. In 2016 the population had increased a tad to just under 76,000. As of 2018 the population here has grown to more than 85,000 residents. If you were to look on a map you would see that Baytown is located at the mouth of the San Jacinto River on Galveston Bay. According to the United States Census Bureau, Baytown is a total of 36.5 square miles in size with about 1.1 miles of that being water. The climate here in Baytown is categorized as “Humid Subtropical.” This means that the summer months will be long, hot and often times oppressive. The winter months on the other hand will be fairly short, cool and somewhat windy. The temperature here varies throughout the year from about the mid-30s during the winter to close to 100 in the summer. The hot season here lasts for four months exactly. From May 25th until September 25th the daily average high is just about 86 degrees. The low for this time is a very comfortable 77 degrees. The warmest time of the year here is during the month of August when the daily average is about 92 degrees. The cool season here lasts for a little less than three months. From the very end of November until the just about the end of February the daily average high is just under 70 degrees. The low for this time is just about 46 degrees. The coolest time of the year here is during the month of January. One of the benefits of living here in Baytown is that you will not see any snow fall throughout the year. But, it does tend to rain a lot in Baytown. You will see about 60 inches of rain per year. The rain tends to happen sporadically throughout the year. The Goose Creek Consolidated Independent School District is the school district that your children will attend if you live here in Baytown. Within this district there are 14 elementary schools, 5 junior high schools, 4 high schools as well as 2 alternative learning centers. There is also a career center here. This school district serves all of Baytown as well as Highlands, Coady, McNair, portions of East Harris County as well as a very small portion of West Chambers County. Robert E. Lee High and Ross S. Sterling High have a long standing, very friendly rivalry between them. The most interesting thing about Lee High School is that is has two campuses due to overcrowding. The higher education here in Baytown is served by “Lee College” which is a two year community college. It serves East Harris County as well as West Chambers County. This public community college is located right here in Baytown. The main campus is more than 40 acres in size and located near Downtown Baytown. There are more than 9,000 students enrolled each year and close to 6,000 of them are enrolled full time in one of the more than 60 academic, technical education and noncredit education programs.
Recreation in Baytown –
Baytown Nature Center is a 450 acre peninsula along the Houston Ship Channel and surrounded on three sides by Burnet Bay, Crystal Bay and Scott Bay. This nature center is both a recreation area as well as a wildlife sanctuary. It is home to hundreds of different kinds of bird species, mammals, reptiles and other aquatic species. This nature center is part of “The Great Texas Costal Birding Trail” which is a state designated system of trails, bird sanctuaries and nature preserves along the entire length of the Texas Gulf Coast.
