Plantation is a major city situated in the central part of Broward County, Florida. It has Sunrise to its northwestern limit, Lauderhill to the northeast, and Davie to the south, while being bordered to the east by Fort Lauderdale. The city of over 90,000 people is a key city in the Miami metropolitan area.
Named for the Everglades Plantation Company, original owner of the land in the area, Plantation emerged in the first half of the 20th century. Frederick C. Peters acquired 10,000 acres of land from the Everglades Plantation Company in 1941 and the first homes in the area were built by Chauncey Park in 1947. The number of residents increased more than fivefold between 1948 and 1950. The city was incorporated in 1953, with the population put at 475 people at the time.
Plantation’s population jumped by about 16,500 people between 1965 and 1970, a year after Motorola opened a facility there. The number of residents has gone on to continue growing in leaps and bounds and was estimated at 92,560 in 2015. The city boasts a high number of well-educated residents, with the percentage of adults with a Bachelor’s degree about twice the national average. Notable residents include Luis Castillo, Cody Ross, Bob Norman, Chad Johnson and rapper Fat Joe.
Considered the 28th-largest area in the state of Florida. Two of the most popular communities here are Jacaranda and The Enclave. Land for the Jacaranda community development was acquired by Gulfstream Land and Development Company in 1970, when the population of the city soared to 23,000, from 6,500 in 1965. The community is home to the Jacaranda Country Club which hosts golf tournaments and other events. The Enclave is a family-friendly community with more than 80 percent owner-occupied homes.
Plantation has about a dozen public schools which are managed by Broward County Public Schools. It has elementary, middle and high schools. There are also a number of private schools, including The Blake School and American Heritage School. For higher education, the city is served by the University of Phoenix.
This area is rich in recreational facilities that can be used for enjoying your leisure. Plantation Preserve Golf Course & Club in Plantation is ranked among the best public golf facility in South Florida and the whole of Florida. The 18-hole championship course is situated in the heart of the city on land previously occupied by the historic Plantation Golf Club. It offers spectacular views and is bisected by a wetlands preserve area drawing inspiration from the Everglades.
If you’d rather prefer to enjoy water-related activities, Central Park Aquatics Complex is a place to be. It offers two Olympic-size swimming pools and an expansive water playground for young kids. The facility, which boasts Thor Guard Lightning Protection System, is used for swimming and diving competitions. It is open year-round and swim lessons are available for people of all ages and levels of skills. There are even Water Aerobics and Arthritis Aquatic Programs.
