Learn More About Palmetto, Florida

Palmetto is a small coastal city in Manatee County in the state of Florida. According to the United States Census Bureau figures, the city of more than 13,000 residents covers a total area of 4.4 square miles, of which just about 3 percent is water. It is included in the Bradenton-Sarasota-Venice Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The establishment of this city is credited to Samuel Sparks Lamb, who is often described as the "Father of Palmetto." Lamb, owner of a general merchandise store in the area, was said to have been the one who carried out the survey and did the plotting of the city in the earlier years. He supposedly donated plots of land belonging to him for its creation. A post office under the "Palmetto" name started operating in 1868. The city was named for the palmetto trees that grew near its original location.

The population of Palmetto was estimated at 13,249 in 2015, representing an increase of slightly over 5 percent on the level as of 2010 census. It played host to almost 4,900 households and more than 6,700 housing units in 2010. The median age of the people living here was calculated at 43 years in that year, although this is estimated to have reduced since then. Palmetto offers home buyers one of the more friendly places to buy a home in terms of cost. Residents are somewhat diverse in their composition.

Palmetto is served by several public schools. These include Palmetto Elementary School, Virgil Mills Elementary School, James Tillman Elementary School, Buffalo Creek Middle School and Palmetto High Schools. The charter schools around the city include Palmetto Charter School which serves grades K-8 and Manatee School for the Arts for grades 6-12.

For recreation, there are about a dozen parks around Palmetto, including the Palmetto Historical Park, Riverside Park, Sutton Park and Lamb Park. The Palmetto Historical Park plays host to many of the events taking place in community every year, including Halloween and a variety of festivals. Residents enjoy the events and activities at this park for free. With its location near water bodies, Palmetto also offers great waterfront fun and promises scenic views you can excite your senses with while on a stroll.

Talking about the events held in Palmetto every year, this include the Heritage Festival, the Great American Cleanup, Desoto Children’s Parade, Martin Luther King Jr. Parade and the Kid’s Fishing Tournament. July 4 every year promises a thrilling experience for both residents and visitors with a lively concert and breathtaking fireworks display on top of the Manatee River. The city also hosts the 10-day Manatee County Fair which holds every January. More festivals and events are added every now and then to make sure people living around here never have a boring time. The latest events that have been introduced include the De Soto Seafood Festival and the Taste of Manatee.

Palmetto makes for a cool place for families and individuals who desire living in a peaceful community. It boasts a decent school district and offers probably one of the more affordable housing costs in the state of Florida.
