Lithia is a beautiful community in Hillsborough County in the state of Georgia. It is a great place to live for those who appreciate serene, natural environment. The unincorporated community is a Tampa suburb offering a more family-friendly place for those working in the big city to call home. Its elevation above sea level ranges from about 8 feet to 105 feet. It has a long history of agriculture, sawmills and phosphate mining. It hosts the headquarters of the international mining division of The Mosaic Company.

 

Situated around 18 miles southeast of Tampa, Lithia was settled around the mid-19th century. The area had originally been inhabited by Native Americans, including the Tocobaga, Muskogan, Tomokan, Caloosa and Seminole. The first settlers arrived in 1846. James Alderman formed a ford on the Alafia River in 1848 – at the current location of Alderman's Ford Park - and supposedly boasted about 30,000 head of cattle by the beginning of the Civil War. The community took its name after the metallic element lithium discovered in the waters of today's Lithia Spring Major.

 

If you are looking for a community that offers a tranquil ambiance around the Tampa area, Lithia is definitely one of those places you need to check out. It boasts a relatively quiet setting, thanks to its resident make-up. While this is a family-friendly community, the number of families whose children live at home is believed to be lower, compared to many other similar towns. The fact that just about 8,000 to 9,000 people live here is, perhaps, the most important reason for the quietude.

 

Lithia includes the census-designated place known as FishHawk. Newland Communities acquired 3,000 acres of land in that CDP in the late 1990s to develop FishHawk Ranch. This relatively recent development is one of the reasons Lithia can boast of being a quiet place. FishHawk Ranch has a friendly hometown atmosphere where neighbors are moved to care for one another and families can grow closer. It is Hillsborough County's maiden certified green new-home community, offering convenient access to about 25 miles of scenic trails. Lithia's most popular neighborhood is FishHawk Ranch Phase 02.

 

This unincorporated community has witnessed a boom in real estate in recent years. The trend is very certainly not unconnected to the rising number of people being drawn by the qualities of Lithia as a great place to live. Homes here are probably among the more sought-after in Florida. The people living here are also among the most educated in the state and across the nation. Percentage of adult residents with at least a Bachelor's degree is calculated at about twice the average for all cities in the United States.

 

Lithia is home to several schools, both public and private. These include FishHawk Creek Elementary School, Lithia Springs Elementary, St. Stephen's Catholic School, Barrington Middle School, and Newsome High School.

 

The community is the host of the over 2,960-acre Alafia River Corridor, Lithia Springs Park, the C.W. Bill Young Reservoir and the more than 5,500-acre Chito Branch Reserve. The 160-acre Lithia Springs Park is a popular location for camping and offers hikers opportunity to explore the woodsy trails, local flora and natural areas.
