Three Valleys - 288 +/- acre private mountaintop estate including three homes, three valleys, and endless possibilities.
Enthroned on its very own mountainside, this grand brick and stone estate was built in the tradition of Germanic castles, offering expansive views while guarded by the rugged topography and generous acreage of the mountains and the three valleys that are its namesake. For more than eighty years, Three Valleys has been a private retreat and a gathering place for guests from The Greenbrier, Palm Beach, and the world of championship golf.
The estate's story begins in the late 1930s, when the property was known as the O'Farrell Home Place and the great house was constructed in its majestic form by a diplomat. In the early 1940s it was conveyed to O.L. Focus and his wi fe, who in turn sold it to Francis Whitten and his wife, Katherine Lewis Whitten. Following the death of Francis Whitten, the property passed to Katherine in May of 1950, and it was during the Whittens' ownership that the estate became known as Three Valleys.
In May of 1963, the trustees for Katherine Lewis Whitten conveyed Three Valleys to Marie Hall of Palm Beach, Florida. Marie entertained frequently and on a grand scale, welcoming friends from The Greenbrier and from Palm Beach to lavish parties at the great house.
In July of 1983, Bill and Joan Campbell purchased the property from Marie Hall Gates. Billy, as he was known, was a renowned amateur golfer and retired Army Captain, and the only American to have led both the United States Golf Association and the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, Scotland. The Campbells carried on the estate's tradition of hospitality, hosting their many friends from the golf world and from The Greenbrier, and Billy spent many days swimming in the pool at Three Valleys. He is remembered "as a man of quiet ritual and easy generosity who would begin each day impeccably turned out" to welcome guests as family. After many years of enjoying the peace and charm of Three Valleys, the Campbells moved to nearby Lewisburg and sold the property to its current owners.
The great house is still grand today with its enormous windows providing views of the surrounding mountain tops and warmth to its hardwood floors. When you first enter the house you are greeted by bright light filtering down the hallway from a huge picture window in the living room with a Western panoramic view. The living room is quite large and when the furniture was whisked away it would function as the ballroom of the home with its many windows, light atmosphere, and big fireplace. Through the living room and off of the master suite a large drawing room makes a comfortable and more casual location to entertain and relax even though it is fashionably appointed. The home is filled with period custom furniture, exquisite paintings, sculptures, and Oriental rugs that provide history and elegance to the home. Stylish period fixtures accentuate the high ceilings and gilded mantles crown the large fireplaces and their motifs. The master suite bath has hand painted cherry blossoms covering its walls while the master bedroom sports one of the best views of the entire home through its windows.
Down a grand curving staircase, you will find more guest rooms, the kitchen, and a large study complete with a huge picture window and doors that lead to a walk out porch. The walkout brick porch on the front of the home allows for outdoor entertaining surrounded by the views and with a covered and screened section for protection from the elements. Through the study and off the kitchen a large dining room provides ample space for lavish meals and family get togethers. The kitchen is modern, complete with built in appliances, custom cabinetry, and a fruit sink with the laundry room just next door. Each of the many bathrooms of the home is themed with its own custom tile, decorations, and wall murals making them unique and name worthy. There are nature themed murals that have been custom painted throughout the home gracing the walls of some of the rooms providing a custom and classy air to each space. Another impressive feature of the great house is its geo-thermal HVAC system. This makes home much more economical to heat and cool. Another feature of the basement is a large workshop with benches and adjacent storage rooms. The great house grounds feature a roundabout driveway, a standalone three car brick garage and guesthouse as well as a pool house and pool. The garage is built into the mountain so that the three car bays are level with the roundabout and the full feature guest house above is level with the swimming pool deck and pool house. Walking out the back door of the guest house leads to a nice level lawn and curated flower bds that transitions into the pool deck. The very large and well equipped pool house features his and hers changing rooms, bathrooms, a kitchen, and independent bedrooms that lead off from the main entertaining room with its fireplace and wrap around bar.
As well as the great house and guesthouse there are two other homes on the property that were built lower down the mountain, each with its own address, private space, and driveway. These homes look out over the large grass fields at the bottom of the property that have been kept clear and in excellent condition. These bottoms are complete with springs, a stream, and weeping willows that provide a wholly different environment from the other biomes of the property. Throughout its 288 acres and up into its high ridges, old logging and fire roads provide access to the interior of the property and make it easy to traverse the rugged terrain to hike and hunt. The rest of the property traverses the three valleys, its ridges and benches forested in expansive slopes that offer utter privacy for the whole estate. Its borders are protected by National Forest and Wildlife Management Areas on the North and East sides of the property and a large rugged, privately owned valley to the South.
While the homes and some of the amenities need to be refurbished, this property retains its grand nature and utterly unique characteristics that can be found nowhere else and simply cannot be replicated in this day and age. Three Valleys is easily accessed through its pillared and gated driveway entrance from the main road, Route 92, just two minutes from White Sulphur Springs.
