Background, General Information and Weather in Garland –

Garland is located within Dallas County with a small portion falling in both Collin and Rockwall Counties. At the time of the 2010 census the population here was 226,876 which made it the 87th most populated city in the United States as well as the 12th most populated city here in Texas. According a recent non census poll taken in 2017, the current population here in Garland is just about 238,000. So there has been a slight increase in population here in the last 17 years. Garland is located Northeast of Dallas and is part of the Dallas – Fort Worth Metroplex. According to the United States Census Bureau, Garland is 57.1 square miles in size with no water whatsoever. Garland also has some accolades that are worth mentioning. Back in 2008 both CNN and Money Magazine listed Garland as one of the “Top 100 Places to Live.” Fast forward to 2014 and this city was ranked as the 7th “Best City for Saving Money.” Then in 2015 Garland was listed as number five for mid sized cities to purchase a home in for first time home buyers. In 2015 it was named the 8th “Best Run City in America.” One of the highest honors Garland has earned comes Move.org. They rated Garland as the “8th Best City in America to Raise a Family.” Garland is also expected to top the list in 2018 when it comes to highest employment growth in the country. These accolades are reason enough to move to this amazing portion of Texas! Shifting gears to the weather. The climate here is categorized as “Humid Subtropical.” This means the summers will be hot and the winters will be cold and windy. The hottest part of the year here goes from the beginning of June until mid September when the daily average high is right around 90 degrees. The low for this time is about 76 degrees. The coolest part of the year goes for three months exactly. From November 25th until February 25th the daily average high is a cool 63 degrees. The low for this time is a chilly 37 degrees. Here in Garland you will rarely see the temperature drop below 25 degrees during the winter or go over 100 in the summer. What is great about this climate is that you will rarely see snowfall here regardless of the sometimes freezing temperatures. Garland receives less than an inch of snow per year! There is about 40 inches of rain which is right on par with the national average.

Subdivisions here in Garland –
There are many desirable neighborhoods and subdivisions here but these are the two most notable. “Carriagehouse Estates” is a beautiful neighborhood just south of the turnpike and west of Rowlett Creek Preserve. These homes have that Texas charm that Texas is well known for. The homes in this area are typically under 2,000 square feet with beautiful landscapes. Another great subdivision here is “Club Hill Estates.” This neighborhood is a only a few minutes from downtown very close to Lake Ray Hubbard, they offer up a ton of space. Most homes up for sale here have more than 2,000 square feet! This is perfect is you have a large family or are looking to start one. Garland was ranked as one of the best cities to raise a family in. So that is something to keep in mind when thinking of making the move here!

Education in Garland –
The “Garland Independent School District” serves the youth here in Garland and is also one of the largest employers in the city. One of the most interesting things about the Garland school district is something called the “Freedom of Choice/Choice of School Plan.” This allows parents to choose which school they want their child or children to attend within the district. Most parents send their children to whichever school is closest to where they live for convenience. This is something that is not seen everywhere and really makes Garland unique. There is a staggering 36 primary schools for you to choose from here as well as 9 middle schools and 5 high schools. There are also schools located in Rowlett which is in Rockwell County as well as Sachse which is in Collin County. Students have the options to attend schools in these counties as well since they fall within the “Freedom of Choice Plan.”
