Eatonton is a small city of more than 6,000 people in the heart of the Lake Country in Georgia. It is the county seat of Putnam County. People of Woodland culture are believed to have lived in this area thousands of years ago. The historic Rock Eagle Effigy Mound found in the northern part of the city is believed to have been constructed by the people as far back as 3,000 years ago. In 1807, Eatonton was established as the seat of the newly-created Putnam County. It was named in honor of William Eaton, an officer and diplomat who took part in the First Barbary War. The Town of Eatonton was incorporated in 1809 and was upgraded to the status of a city in 1879.

Eatonton is noted for its tradition of tales. So you shouldn't be overly surprised if you heard a story that sounds too good to be true sometimes. The city hosts a statue of the Br'er or Brer Rabbit, a central character renowned for its trickery in the Uncle Remus' stories of the Southern U.S. You may learn more about this character and more at the Uncle Remus Museum.
