Doral is a municipality in Miami-Dade County and one of the notable communities in the state of Florida. Incorporated in 2003, the city has its origin traced to Alfred and Doris Kaskel, who bought an expanse of land in the area with intention of building a hotel and golf course. Its name is derived from the combination of the first letters in the names of the real estate pioneers. Doral is bordered by Medley to the north, Sweetwater to the south, and the Ronald Reagan Turnpike to the west. It is situated in the proximity of Miami International Airport and just about 12 miles from Downtown Miami.
Doral has a population of 54,116 as of 2014, but city population often swells beyond 100,000, driven by the number of those working in Miami. It boasts a young population, with slightly more than a quarter aged 24 years or younger in 2000. Median age of resident is estimated at 33 years. This looks like a place that will sure appeal to young and upwardly-mobile career individuals.
The city ranks among the better-educated communities in the United States. More than half of the total residents have at least a college degree, significantly higher than the national average. As a result, majority of the people here are employed in career areas such as sales, management, and administrative support. In 2013, the median household income was estimated at $68,506, compared to $53,060 in 2000. Per capita income in the city stands at more than $27,000.
Doral boasts of many business and financial institutions despite its somewhat small size. This is made possible mainly as a result of its proximity to Miami International Airport. Carnival Corporation, Martinair, Amadeus North America and Perry Ellis International are some of the companies with headquarters in the city. Carnival Corporation, Marriott International and Univision were the top 3 employers in the municipality as of 2011.
Most homes in Doral are relatively recently built, being founded in the mid-20th century. The real estate market is a solid one that attracts interest from many buyers near and far. Pieces of property in the area are among the most sought-after in Florida, with this being reflected in prices. After hitting a low during the recession, the number of new building permits is on the rise again, indicative of fresh influx of people to Doral.
The large number of educational institutions in Doral makes obvious a major reason the people here are more educated than what obtains nationally. The city has both public and private schools, including colleges and universities. Some of these are Doral Academy Charter Middle School, Shelton Academy, Divine Savior Academy, and Millennia Atlantic University. Doral public schools are under the Miami-Dade County Public Schools system.
Doral is a great city worth checking out, especially if you're an educated, single and upwardly-mobile career person. It provides great opportunity to meet many like minds considering its relatively small size. People of diverse racial backgrounds call the city home, with majority of these born outside America.
