At night, dine in one of the tavernas in the tiny village.brbrA visit to Gastouri is a thoroughly enjoyable trip for visitors to Corfu. The village is also known as Acheillio, after the famous summer palace of Empress Sisi of Austria. Located just 30 minutes away, the palace draws intrigue due to its historical and cultural significance. The palace was built in 1898 by an Italian architect and Greek sculptor with inspiration from Greek mythology. Iconic statues of Zeus, Hera and Achilles himself are dotted around the palace, which is surrounded by dazzling gardens and boasts incredible views of the Ionian Sea.brbrCorfu is the second largest of the Ionian Islands and has strong Venetian influence in the architecture, as well as Byzantine. Literally translated as 'a pair of peaks', the island has two hills topped with fortresses that once successfully defended the island from the Ottoman Empire. The largest of the hills has a lighthouse with spectacular views over the sea.br brThe Old Town has a myriad of narrow, winding lanes, filled with Venetian and Neoclassical architecture, painted in sunny yellow and orange. Just off Spianada Square, where locals congregate for coffee and socialising, is the Old Fortress on the site of an acropolis atop a rocky peninsula. Visitors can walk up to the highest point for breathtaking views, passing a small chapel and museum along the way. brbrA popular trip from Corfu is to nearby Pontikosini (Mouse Island) where there is a tiny Byzantine monastery surrounded by pine and cypress trees. According to local legend, this is the spot of Ulysses' ship after it was turned to stone by the wrath of Poseidon. The island gets its name as it's said to be the outline of a mouse when you look at it from above.br brA day at the beach is what springs to mind when booking a holiday to Corfu - and with so many to choose from, you could try a different beach every day! Canal d'Amour is a popular beach in Sidari, the northwest side of the island. This beach has gorgeous sand and turquoise water, but the unique element is the rectangular rock with a gap that you can swim through on a calm day. It's said that couples who swim through together will get married within the year. brbrA spectacular beach on the west side of the island is Agios Spyriodon - you can drive across the island to reach it. Two-tone, crystalline waters make up the bay, and an endless stretch of golden sand makes up the beach. Many of the beaches have pebbles in this area, so this beach is considered one of the best. The monastery of Agia Ekaterini stands proudly nearby, as well as plenty of coffee shops and restaurants.brbrThere are plenty of tasty treats to tuck into on Corfu, such as bourdeto, which is rockfish in a tomato sauce with plenty of onions and garlic, and pastralio, with fried aubergine layered with cheese and baked with boiled eggs, pancetta or salami, with a tomato and basil sauce. For the adventurous, try sofrito - veal cooked in a wine sauce with white pepper and garlic and served with rice or mashed potato. brbrTerms & Conditions:brbr brCredit card details may be requested as guaranteebrbr3pmbrbr11ambrbrYes, included in rental price.brbrBed linen and bath towels are included in the rental price. Colonial in style, it charmingly blends local Corfiot traditions with more exotic features, and all the rooms are generously proportioned.brbrThe two main reception rooms are on opposite sides of the hallway. The living room, a luminous space, hosts a sitting area gathered around a fireplace and a large L-shaped corner sofa. Wide glass door bring in the garden and sea views and allow easy access onto a shaded colonnade. The dining room is similar in style and proportions and also accesses a well-furnished terrace to the side of the house.brbrAt the end of the hallway (but also accessed from the dining room) is the large, split-level kitchen and breakfast room. Above is the kitchen, with its bespoke cabinetry, central island and access to a shaded al fresco dining area; a couple of steps down is a wooden table seating eight, and stairs leading down to the lower ground floor level (of which more anon).brbrBack in the hallway, heading towards the sea-facing side of the house, are two suites, one down a few stairs, the other up a few stairs:brbr• the former is a sizeable double with a sofa and armchairs, a fireplace, an en-suite bathroom with double sinks and a tub, views over Gouvia Bay and Ypapanti church, and access to the terraces and gardensbr• the latter is also a spacious double with an en-suite shower room, a sitting area and a private balcony with garden, pool and sea viewsbrbrThe impressive open staircase in the hallway leads up to the first floor, where there are four more bedrooms:brbr• two large sea-view doubles with sitting areas, en-suite bathrooms with tubs and access to private sea-view terracesbr• a double-twin and a twin sharing a shower room and a terracebrbrThe lower ground floor is accessed, as mentioned above, via a staircase from the kitchen-diner. It is home to a twin bedroom with en-suite shower room (best for teenagers or a nanny), and a recreation room with a pair of comfy sofas and a TV, and a well-equipped gym with sauna.brbrOutside: Ophira is cocooned in fabulous, mature, extremely well-tended gardens and the possibilities for living a carefree al fresco life are numerous and enticing.brbrMost action (or lazy inaction) takes place on the sea-facing terraces and gardens in front of the house. Here, looking out over Gouvia Bay and whitewashed Ypapanti church, is a wide sweep of terrace, bordered by a shady colonnade, well-furnished paved areas and one of the star attractions: a voluminous wood-framed pavilion that has the feel of a safari lodge about it. Hosting a dining area, a bar and a barbecue area and wood-burning oven, this spot is great at all times of the day, but really comes into its own as evening calls, drinks are served, and dinner is underway.brbrA few steps down from the terraces is the fabulous 16m-long, curvaceous zero-edge pool. Flanked by emerald green lawns, loungers and shade-giving trees, this super pool will delight both keen swimmers and those who prefer more leisurely immersions. This latter group may enjoy the heatable plunge pool with water jets hidden away at one end of the pool.brbrThe gardens and terraces fan out around the house, with mature Mediterranean pines, sky-reaching cypresses and vibrantly coloured bougainvillea providing a wonderful sensation of privacy, seclusion and fragrant wellbeing.brbrAll the rooms, both on the ground and the first floor, flow outside on to terraces: the kitchen opens out onto a shady spot that's perfect for cool breakfasts, the dining room has its own terrace to the side of the house; the living area accesses the colonnade to the front of the property; and the bedrooms all have their own panoramic terraces, most looking out over Gouvia Bay, the others over the gardens.brbrThe first floor is also home to a communal terrace, accessed from the landing. This leads to a walkway above the colonnade and then steps down to the gardens.brbrLast but not least, a gate at the bottom of the garden opens out onto a road which you will need to cross to get to Gouvia Bay, where you can make good use of the property's stand up paddle boards and canoe. There's also a boat hire supplier a 200m walk away.brbrThe number of steps that must be negotiated to get into and/or around this property might make it unsuitable for people with mobility problems.brOphira is situated on the exclusive Kommeno promontory, just 11km (a 15min drive or taxi ride) north of Corfu Town, whose Venetian fortifications, UNESCO World Heritage Site old town centre, labyrinth of pretty streets and excellent range of shops, restaurants, bars and nightlife are well worth exploring.brbrThe best beaches nearby are at Spiaggia Bianca and Dassia, both of which are around 5 minutes away, while in terms of tavernas, apart from the one within easy walking distance (600m), there are plenty of options just a short drive away up and down the coast.brbrFor shops, bars and cafés, there is a good selection in and around Gouvia just across the bay, and there is a boat hire provider within a few minutes' stroll from Ophira.brbrHeading to the northeast of Corfu are the delightful little bays, beaches and villages of Agni, Kalami, Agios Stefanos and Avlaki, and the bustling little harbour town of Kassiopi.brbrIf you're travelling with kids, there are plenty of stimulating activities and attractions for children within easy reach.brbrArrival details will be confirmed by The Thinking Traveller after your villa is confirmed.brbrThe Thinking Traveller can organise transfers and car hire and an agent will be in touch with you once your villa is confirmed.

Iola - Five Bedroom Villa, Sleeps 10

Limni, Limni, Greece

A ravishing, architect-designed contemporary villa for lovers of harmonious, high-end luxury.brbrOccupying a privileged sea-view position in one of Corfu’s most sought-after areas, Iola is one of the top luxury villas available for rent in the Ionian Islands. Its exquisite design, superior fittings and finishes, stylish designer furnishings, and its array of high-spec amenities, including a cinema room, a sauna, a yoga studio and an infinity pool, combine to create an utterly beguiling experience.brbrInside: designed to make the most of its captivating sea views, and conceived as an impeccably contemporary home, Iola is characterised by clean geometric lines, floor-to-ceiling walls of sliding glass doors that blur the lines between indoor and outdoor living, sleek, sophisticated materials, numerous bespoke features, and an attention to detail that encompasses everything from the lighting to the artwork.brbrAccommodation at Iola is on two levels and flows effortlessly with the outdoor areas. The main entrance takes one into the hub of the home, a spacious, airy, open-concept space that's divided into three well-defined and beautifully furnished areas: a sitting area with large sofa and a couple of armchairs, a dining area with designer table and chairs, and a bespoke, sea-view Italian kitchen equipped with a central island and breakfast bar, and an array of top-level appliances. A wide wall of sliding glass doors drink in the light and the views and offer seamless access to the al fresco lounge and dining terraces, featuring a built-in barbecue, a worktop and a sink.brbrA door to one side of this room leads into the main bedroom, an enchanting, tranquil space where fitted wardrobes, electric curtains and a king-sized bed ensure an extremely high level of comfort. More of those floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors bring in the sea views and provide access to the surrounding terraces and gardens, while an opulent en-suite bathroom with a large free-standing bath, walk-in shower, and double sinks oozes luxury. Across the other side of the open-concept living and dining area, a glass walkway leads to the second bedroom on this level, a sea-view double with en-suite shower room and sliding glass doors accessing a panoramic balcony. brbrA flight of stairs leads down from the corridor between the living area and the second bedroom to the lower level. Here a wide, luminous hallway provides access to a double-twin bedroom with en-suite shower room, sea views and access to a gloriously verdant lawn, a large Swedish sauna with adjacent shower room, a yoga and Pilates studio, and a fabulous cinema room with a 110-inch projector screen, a commodious sink-in sofa, and a kitchenette with fridge, sink, dishwasher and coffee machine. A door to one side of the screen, meanwhile, leads into a corridor, off which, via an ante-room, one may access the final two bedrooms, both double-twins with en-suite shower rooms and access to the gardens.brbrOutside: Iola's open-concept communal space and all its bedrooms except one flow outside via floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall sliding glass doors. The villa's roof extends out to provide shade for the beautifully furnished outdoor living area. Views from here take in the gorgeous infinity pool, with its subtle mosaic tiling and adjacent matching Jacuzzi, the sea, and the coastline of northeastern Corfu. This panorama is shared by the shady al fresco dining area, which is served by a stainless steel kitchen and BBQ. On the other side of the outdoor living area is an expanse of emerald lawn furnished with sun loungers. The gardens wrap around the property, alternating beds of aromatic shrubs with pine and olive trees, manicured lawns and paths. Carefully designed external lighting ensures that all of the outdoor spaces take on a magical glow as the sun sets and night falls.brbrIola features a fantastic infinity pool, offering swimmers stunning views while in the pool. There is a drop off the infinity side so we recommend children are supervised at all times. Please refer to our general safety page if you would like more information about infinity pools.brbrDue to the nature of the property including terraces low walls and several drops around the grounds, children must be supervised at all times.brbrIn high season, and particularly on weekends, flights can be heard coming in to land at nearby Corfu Airport.brIola is situated on the exclusive promontory of Kommeno, just 11km (a 20-minute drive or taxi ride) north of Corfu Town, with its UNESCO World Heritage centre, and its excellent range of shops, restaurants, bars and nightlife.brbrThe nearest beach, Spilios, is a 5-minute walk away (10 minutes back up steps) and has a bar, taverna and water sports equipment. There are several other tavernas within walking distance (some of which are along an unlit road without pavements) while an adjacent 5-star hotel offers a selection of more upscale options. brbrThe nearest towns with amenities (mini-markets, shops, bakeries, cafés, etc) are Dassia and Gouvia, a few minutes' drive away. They both also have beaches with water sports facilities and, where the latter is concerned, a busy marina.brbrThere are also plenty of activities for kids nearby.brbrArrival details will be confirmed by The Thinking Traveller after your villa is confirmed.brbrThe Thinking Traveller can organise transfers and car hire and an agent will be in touch with you once your villa is confirmed.
