Castellana Grotte, Puglia
A lovely extended and refurbished Trullo in a quiet rural location but only 5 minutes drive to the small town of Castellana Grotte. It has been our family holiday home for over 17 years and is ideal for a private family getaway, large groups or two families wanting to go on holiday together. The Trullo sleeps 7, has 4 bedrooms; 2 double, 1 twin and 1 single (cot available on request) and 3 bathrooms; 2 en suite and 1 with a bath. The kitchen is well equipped with an oven/hob, microwave, fridge/freezer, dishwasher and washing machine and opens out onto a shady patio. It has a cosy sitting room with 2 small sofas.
The villa is tastefully decorated with many of the furnishings locally sourced from potteries and antique markets. Many of the pictures and prints on the walls are by the owner, Caroline, and fellow artists.
The fabulous large enclosed private pool is for sole use with plenty of shade and surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and cherry orchards. The pool was retiled last year and is a lovely iridescent blue/purple. There is a room underneath to store games, toys for the pool and suitcases.
There are many places to relax outside - around the pool, on the garden patio surrounded by vines and fruit trees, and the outside dining area. There is a WiFi, table tennis table, books, DVDs, games, TV with all the main networks available, and plenty of drawing paper and colouring pens.
We started planting the garden 10 years ago and it is now becoming established with a small orchard of olive and fruit trees, oleander, jasmine, bougainvillea, and lavender. There are plenty of opportunities to sit and eat outside either of the two patios or by the poolside.
It is close to the historic towns of Conversano and Putignano. The beach, Polignano a Mare, Alberobello (the Trulli Capital) and hilltop towns of Martina Franca and Locorotondo are only a short drive (30 - 60 mins) away.
Our nearest town, Castellana, has everything that you need, including plenty to watch in the square during the summer months.
Please note that during the months of July and August bookings are from Saturday to Saturday and for a minimum of 7 nights. At other times we accept booking of 4 nights or more. Thank you
A very nice property converted from old traditional buildings, with some good bedroom accomodation, very firm mattresses, a quite small kitchen with adequate cooking facilities. i was wishing for a sharp knife though. Very small living areas inside the house and more generous sitting area outside. A very quiet location, a beautiful and relaxing pool area within a rural farming location.
This is a great trulli. The house was airy and clean with all the facilities you need. I like to cook and the cosy kitchen was well stocked with all the tools you might require to create your Italian classics with the fabulous local ingredients. The pool is lovely and the biggest we have had before on holiday. Alex, your local contact is incredibly helpful. Locally you are 10 mins outside the nearest town, which has all the shops etc you might need. Be sure to go to the Sugar Gelateria for the best ice cream ever, and the wine shop for ridiculously cheap and lovely local vino. Further afield you are approx 30 mins from nearest beaches. Over the years we have done many villa with pool type holidays across Europe and this was my family's favourite by a mile-thank you Paul and Caroline.
Our family of five spent a few busy days in Rome in August 2014, and then wanted to have a few days relaxation mixed with exploring the Puglia area of Italy, which had been recommended to us. This Trulli was the perfect location for an ideal mix of relaxing by the pool, visiting the local sites and enjoying the unspoiled area. Even the drive from Rome was spectacular in many places. The combination of the quiet rural setting, the large pool and wonderful character of the Trulli made it a unique experience which I can thoroughly recommend. We are already planning our next visit. If you are not familiar with the area, make sure you visit Monopoli, the Castellana Grotte caves and the unique and stunning town of Alberobello, the UNESCO world heritage site promoting the history of trulli in a magnificent setting. With children of 17, 14 and 9, and two adults that like a mixture of relaxation and great sight-seeing, it is not easy to find the perfect holiday. I can safely say, we found the perfect location and I hope you are able to enjoy it as much as we did.
Dear Caroline and dear Alex, this was the second time we came and it won't be the last! Thank you for everything! The Trullo and the pool are beautiful, the people in Castellana were really friendly, the shops for food gorgeous and the restaurants always great. This is Italy at its best!
We stayed three weeks in the Trullo and it was outstanding! The Trullo is very well kept and the pool area is just great so we spend the time mostly at home and relaxed in the quiet surrounding. Our children loved it and so did we. Alex and Julia took great care with our needs and helped with everything. Thank you! We will be back!
Our family of five stayed at Trullo Carlotta for two weeks in August 2010. We were looking for a peaceful spot in a rural location where we could relax and spend family time together immersed in the Italian scene. Trullo Carlotta was well suited to this goal. The Trullo is set well apart from its neighbours amongst olive groves. The accommodation has all the charm and character of a traditional Trullo together with a modern tasteful interior with all the up to date features and appliances. We understand the property is new to the market and has been well fitted out with utensils, plenty of glasses, crockery etc. etc. The bedrooms are fair sized and the three bathrooms well fitted out. The peaceful location ensures there’s no disruption to long lies should you desire them. The pool is perhaps the place where we spent most of our time. It’s a good size for getting some exercise with plenty of shallows for younger families. The water was crystal clear while we were there and just the right temperature to cool from the heat of the sun. We did make one trip to the coast which was lovely, but we found the Trullo had everything we needed so tended to only venture out to visit neighbouring towns. These combine fine buildings with fascinating history. We were surprised by the Norman architecture (Conversano) and the region’s connection to the English throne – this area lies on the main route taken from Europe to the Crusades. For truilli, Alberobello is the mecca. Do not miss the local caves – we have seen plenty of limestone over the years, but these are on a different scale and quite exceptional. Castellana has several markets where good deals can be negotiated for all the essentials. These along with several nearby supermarkets and a wine merchant who sold direct from the barrel, made day to day logistics straightforward and a real pleasure. We do not hesitate to recommend Trullo Carlotta for your family holiday.
We stayed in the trullo just outside Castellana at the end of September last year. The trullo is in a good location for visiting the local sights, towns and facilities. The accommodation has been finished to a high standard and has everything you need, not to mention several beautiful bathrooms and a fabulous pool! Alex from Masseria Cesarina was extremely helpful, making sure that basic provisions were there on arrival, showing us where the trullo was located and generally making sure we were ok. We had a thoroughly relaxing/interesting stay and look forward to going back again sometime soon.
