Claremont, Virginia
The Claremont River House is a peaceful getaway located on a high peninsula overlooking the James River. The location itself has a deep history, from before the time of the earliest European settlers, but the house itself was built about 20 years ago as a creativity retreat.
Each of the four levels of the house has rooms with balconies facing the water and views ranging far up and down the lovely James River. The bottom floor is a walk-out basement with a bedroom housing a queen bed, a two headed stone tile shower, a separate WC and a large communal sitting area. The main floor has a large Great Room and the communal kitchen as well as access on three sides to the wrap around porch. Two bedrooms are located on the second floor; the master with the king sized bed and gracious bath, featuring a Kohler slipper tub, opens onto a private balcony overlooking the river. The second bedroom has a queen sized bed and a private bath and offers a view of the grounds. The uppermost floor houses a cozy room with a private bath and a stunning, bird's eye perch over the river. The four-acre grounds provide seclusion along with easy access to the river side community.
Much of the woodwork in the home was made by Mack Headley, a former master craftsman in Colonial Williamsburg. Some of it, such as the herringbone patterned floor in the Great Room and staircase, was made by him from local walnut.
Enjoy, relax!

The house was a grand home with verandas on multiple levels. We enjoyed sitting outside at the end of each day with wine and enjoying the view (birds, boats, and deer). The kitchen was well stocked with everything you need to prepare meals with a marvelous stove, 2 ovens, microwave and cookware as well as ample dishes. 4 bedrooms and 4.5 baths meant each of the four of us had our own space. The common areas were very nice.y appointed as well. The internet also was functional. It was a free ferry ride to many historic sites but the trip was worth it as we could return to a grand home and enjoy the quiet.
Beautiful house in a quiet serene setting...Everything one could need for a perfect stay was in the house. It was close to many places to visit and/or parks. Each room was filled with light and each bedroom, its own bathroom. The gathering room was fantastic and the porches provided amazing views of the river. We saw rabbits, deer, hawks, plus more...on the property. We walked a 2 mile loop to the river and back through town to the house. At night we saw shooting stars and had spectacular sunsets and sunrises. We celebrated 4 birthdays and 1 retirement. We had dinners at the large table together. Coming from various States, this was a magical week and place to be together.
I can’t say enough about our stay in the River House. It was very grand, amazing, scenic views overlooking the James River, clean, spacious, peaceful, historical, and relaxing. What a truly amazing vacation spot. Thank you ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The location and layout of this beautiful home was perfect for our group of adults and children. Anna the host was beyond accommodating and was very patient and helpful whenever we needed her. We locked ourselves out of the interior rooms twice but it turned into an opportunity to meet some wonderful new people. Can't wait to go back next year.
This place is perfect! It’s private, peaceful, the views are amazing!
The house was perfect for all of us. We could eat together, sit on back porch, watch wildlife, do our daily forays into all the areas around. Drink lots of coffee.
This property is a sensory buffet. From the perfectly appointed interior to the active osprey nest just outside the stairway landing window, this was a welcoming and warm oasis for our family getaway. Guest enjoyed the gathering spaces and the privacy of bedrooms, each with their own en suite. The grounds are great for quiet walks, exploring, and observing nature. The property manager answered my questions and gave us many options in the area before arrival, with even more on the property. This is the perfect mix of rural solitude, being nestled in Surry Co/Spring Grove, and Williamsburg's major tourism attractions are an enjoyable free ferry ride away. The only hardship this property created was having to leave it!
From the moment your drive up you know you are going to have a wonderful time! The house is gorgeous and the owners really took care to have everything we could possibly want from start to finish. The details that were put into the weekend really made this trip that much more special. With incredible views and easy access to the river we all enjoyed our time away and were so thankful to have discovered such an incredible house! Definitely recommend a visit and I am looking forward to getting back there again soon!
The property was beautiful, clean, spacious, and surprisingly stocked with extra amenities for guests..Anna and Stephanie were super helpful.. We enjoyed not having TV and wifi, as family time and seclusion was the point of our trip.. We enjoyed bird watching and kept the windows open most of the stay.. Saw 3 different eagles off the back balcony during our stay, which was very rare...we utilized the cornhole boards, fire pit, and the radios located through out the house.. take the reviews serious when they say the closest store is NO WHERE nearby.. We visited Williamsburg, Janestowne, York Town, (the tiny sliver) Claremont Beach for a sunset and Smiths Plantation.. prepare to be an easy hour from pretty much anything.. we never spotted a human in Claremont until our day leaving (other than the owner). We utilized the long drive for our daily exercise.. The Merchant Square in Williamsburg has several dining options if you really wanna eat out.. we came prepared to make several meals at the home but did eat early dinners at The Cheese Shop and Mellow Mushroom and lunch at Retro(something) that had amazing lunch and local craft beer.. The Beer Project (in same bldg as Mellow Mushroom) is a fun family place to await the local eateries with several games (for kids) and beers on tap.. Also a Smashburgers that looked amazing and had no wait (like the sit-downs), was located in the same area.. The property is stocked with several items for finer dining or serving that makes me think a small wedding, reception, or shower would also be beautiful here with lots of items already offered with the fee. I agree with the review about comfortable seating in the living area, but we stayed outside most of our trip so that wasn't an issue for us.. If we are to visit the area again, we would certainly look to stay again here.. *last note, you need to be physically able to climb stairs to enjoy this property as there is no bedroom on main floor.. Thank you for sharing this gem of a property!
I agree with all of the previous reviews posted. This house is amazing! Definitely a place to relax and unwind. We hope to rebook again some day.
This home is gracious and has beautifully appointed rooms. The view from every floor was breathtaking - including the lush property with all the crêpe myrtles in bloom and other flowers as well as long views in both directions of the James River. We saw so many types of birds. And more than once had bald eagle sightings which was very magical! The kitchen had everything that we needed to cook over the long weekend. We did drive to a restaurant one evening and it was a little far. I’d recommend planning to cook or grill out because the scenic views were a lovely backdrop to all our meals - inside and out. Fabulous stay for four best friends!
My friends and I stayed here for a few days so we could go to Busch Gardens and Water Country USA. This was the most PERFECT place we could've asked to stay. Insanely beautiful, secluded, and bright. We had a blast here, thank you!
The house is well maintain and you feel you are in an upgraded version of the colony time due to the house decoration. The river view from the porch is amazing. I would recommend the owners to provide visitors a decal for proof of residency to visit the river beach close to the house. In addition, I would also recommend to add very clear in the description the following: No wi-fi'; no descent supermarket close to the house (just a Dollar General); list the Water skiing (we never found one, not even for canoeing).
Anna was responsive, attentive and professional during our stay. The house was perfect for us. We felt at home. The view was superb. We saw many Osprey and other birds as well as a momma deer and her fawn come very close to the house. We went to the beach for a sunset and it was amazing! The house is well appointed and had just about everything you could need for your stay. I highly recommend this house, you will not regret it!
We had a ball with family and friends . With no TV gives you time to spend with family.
Highly recommend. Clean, inviting, and relaxing environment.
Second time staying here. Great place and we will be staying here again !!
