Nearby
Less than 3 minutes by car (approximately 1,2 kilometres away) is the resort town of Calheta, which, with its man-made golden beaches, is popular with tourists and locals alike.
Next to the beach is Calheta Marina where such activities as sailing, diving, big-game fishing are based.
This area is also known for its sugar cane production and mill, the oldest of which has been changed into a museum as you descend into town; you may wish to visit and purchase some of the quality local rum.
The most contemporary and principal art museum in Madeira is the Casa das Mudas, less than 800m from your villa.
In Calheta you will find a selection of bars and restaurants. The closest is the Convento das Vinhas, only a three minute walk away.
Being based here also allows you great access to the mountains for both sightseeing (Madeira is breathtakingly beautiful) and walking (which has become extremely popular along the levadas or for hiking)
Ribeira Brava, 10 minutes by car, is the next largest town, and offers a greater election of shops, cafés and restaurants, and a couple of supermarkets.

Madeira
Some seven hundred kilometres west of the African coast, Madeira is a stunning mountainous emerald island, lapped by the warm waters of the Gulf Stream. The first island to be discovered by the Portuguese navigators in 1419, Madeira became an important resting place on the long trip to the new world. From these humble beginnings, the holiday trade was formed and this spectacular island, which used to be the favourite place of the rich and famous, is now the preferred choice of all sorts of visitors, from those seeking year-round warm temperatures to nature lovers and sightseers, sports and active enthusiasts of all ages. Culture, history, stunning nature, a myriad of sea and land activities, added to a great foodie scene means Madeira has something for everyone. No matter where you go on the island you are rewarded by fabulous scenery, tiny villages and friendly people. With a population of over 100,000, Funchal is not only the capital, but also the 'heart' of Madeira and home to many of the islanders. This makes it a busy, chic, cosmopolitan and fun city, full of shops, shopping centres, bars, cafés and a great variety of restaurants and entertainment; a vibrant, cosmopolitan town where historic splendour and breath-taking natural beauty combine with a thoroughly modern atmosphere.

Nice and really large house at the hill side with nice views. Pool is smaller than it looks on the photos, though. Quite norrow and steep road towards the house.

Awesome house and the view was great. Very peaceful location but close enough to everything you need. Felt like a home not a rental.

The house was a delight although not the cat with the kittens who appeared at the dining room doors on most occasions when we got back from day/evening out. The pool was cold even though we paid to have it set at the highest temperature other than that it was a lovely villa with great views. Others have mentioned about the tightness of the turn into the drive and how steep it is but when you have done it a couple of times you are used to it. Diana was excellent when we had a problem with the tv. Sorted very quickly. Really the problems mentioned are minor the overall experience was very good.

The house is located on a hill in a quiet residential area, just 5 min. from Calheta waterfront/marina and 1 hour from Funchal Airport. Three terraces offer fantastic views overlooking the sea or mountain side . We very much enjoyed the tranquility and the easy access to the majority of the hiking areas. The local supermarket offers a quite wide range of fresh fish and all we needed during our stay. There's a restaurant in walking distance and some in Calheta (waterfront/marina or uphill) . This property is very well kept and equipped, it met all our expectations. We enjoyed the spaciousness (2 adults only), the outside barbecue area and used the heated pool extensively. The agency as well as the owner provided excellent service, we received all relevant information in advance and a warm welcome upon arrival. Both were approachable at any time and very helpful. Many thanks. We'd love to come back !

Beautiful villa with stunning views. Access road to property a little narrow if you have a large vehicle. Tastefully furnished but lacking in parts, no wardrobe or drawers in small bedroom and no mirror in another double. furnishings more like collectors antiques rather than suitable holiday home, I would have worried if small children were staying. Outside areas stunning and beautifully maintained. It would have been nice if certain provisions had been provided as part of welcome pack, coals for bbc and bin bags rather than being asked to provide them ourselves. We arrived late evening and although bread juice and fruit left, no milk. However, on the whole a beautiful villa in stunning area.

The house was excellent in every way. The pool table was a nice feature but the real stars were the amazing views from the various terraces. The owners were very friendly and helpful. The only area for improvement that is needed is the inadequate pool heating. Despite the fact that we paid €120 to have the pool heated to 24degrees the water remained so cold that we only braved the pool twice despite hot and sunny weather. Perhaps an insulated cover might help to stop the water getting really cold overnight? That's our only criticism - everything else about the property was absolutely first class.

Mecia the villa owner met us on arrival and showed us around her lovely villa. My wife, daughter, son in law and I had a great week. The villa is set high above the village of Calheta, with a long frontage facing South over the sea with mountain views. The village is an easy 30 minute drive from the Madeiran capital, Funchal. The local area is very pretty, green with running streams. The large 4 bed villa had everything, including a pool table which got very good use and an infinity pool. I'm sure we'll be going back.

6 adults stayed for a long holiday. There was excellent support from the family- directions from the airport were accurate, we were met at the villa and shown around, the owners were attentive to our needs eg brought logs for the wood burner and sorted out internet problems on the same day. The villa has super views across both valley and beach/ coastline. Outdoor space is very well organised and equipped with tables, chairs, recliners and BBQ with table and chairs (that we used for breakfast). The villa was really clean and well looked after by maids. The kitchen was friendly to use. It was good to have a games room. The dining room was spacious and well equipped. We would certainly stay again. The restaurant at the bottom of the drive is excellent. The bars and restaurants on the marina below are excellent also- good food and lovely staff. There is a good supermarket there as well. There are plenty of coffee shops/ bakeries up the hill in the village also. We had not visited the west of the island before and were very impressed with coastal villages including Jardim do Mar and those between Calheta and Funchal. The description is right- you do need a car. Watch the entrance to the drive. We had a large vehicle and we really had to pull mirrors in, and approach the drive from uphill in order to avoid damaging the vehicle. We had two small problems with kitchen electrics- I only mention these as the family sorted them out on the same day.
