Eleuthera, Florida
Bellosguardo, which means ‘Beautiful landscape’, is a luxury beachfront villa with superb ocean views.
Poised above the pink sand beach of Winding Bay and surrounded by hibiscus and bougainvillea, this unique villa floats above the palmettos, affording gorgeous views of the ocean and Eleuthera’s famous sunrises and sunsets. The curved cathedral ceiling, and open plan design of the Great Room create the feeling of space and light and the hand-embroidered textiles and hangings from India add vivid splashes of colour.
In the Great Room are two large and one double sofas plus a fireplace for those occasional cooler winter evenings, not normally needed! Because of the villa’s unique design, both bedrooms open directly onto the front terrace and face the ocean at oblique angles to each other. The master bedroom is furnished with a queen size orthopaedic bed and ensuite bathroom, while the guest room has twin beds and is also ensuite. (A child's cot is available for a younger child.)
Two study areas are furnished with desks, where wireless internet is available, to allow quieter moments for those wishing to write or paint. The house is furnished with ceiling fans and air conditioners in all rooms although the villa enjoys a constant breeze and is well insulated from the midday sun.
A DVD player, a portable charcoal grill and a gas BBQ are all available. Swimming in the turquoise ocean at the bottom of the garden is only a stone’s throw away and on the very private, pristine sandy beach it is possible to walk for miles, perfect your bone-fishing skills, go for a snorkel, catch lobsters in Joseph’s Cay, or take the four kayaks to explore for turtles in the adjacent Half Sound. Beyond the reef that protects the bay, great game fish await the deep-sea fisherman.
Further afield, the island offers additional attractions; the Leon Levy Nature Reserve, several good bars and restaurants, great beaches and opportunities for cycling, snorkelling and scuba diving.
This secluded house is ideal for honeymooning couples, groups of friends or for families with children, or those seeking a quite retreat in which to contemplate or to create. It is only 15 minutes from Rock Sound International Airport and the Marketplace, where all amenities are available, and five minutes from Tarpum Bay where it is possible to buy fresh fish and lobsters daily from fishermen at the pier and twenty minutes from Island Farm at Palmetto Point where you can buy fresh bread Tuesdays and Fridays, and home grown produce. The house is a perfect retreat for someone wishing to escape the glitz and glamour of resort life and enjoy peace and solitude in the heart of a natural wilderness.
Both Pineapple Air and Bahamas Air fly to Rock Sound airport in the early morning and late afternoon from Nassau. The owners are happy to discuss ways and means of getting there from Europe with prospective renters. Pickup at all the various Eleuthera airports can and will be arranged by the property manager who will supply and advise on car rentals.
Great house! Loved the layout and open space. This is the fourth house my family and I have rented on winding bay and it’s the best space so far. Big open living/dining area that we spent all of our indoor time in. The house manager was very responsive and overall this house helped make our trip very special.
Enjoyed having a mile pluss long beach alll to ourselves for a week. House was terrific as advertized
Bellosguardo is a perfect, quiet and lovely home away from home. The very clean house had every amenity we needed and more than enough room for our family of 4. There is a sweet black and white cat that comes buy frequently for attention and food. We called her Pumpkin and our daughters quickly adopted her as our guest. The guidebook provided is worth every minute that was spent putting it together. We took a copy with us everywhere we went. We took full advantage of the kayaks and explored both Winding Bay and Half sound. We encountered much of the local wildlife including birds, sea turtles and stingrays. The property manager, Latoya, was pleasant, hardworking and kind. She offered to arrange a visit from a local doctor when our daughter became ill. Latoya made sure we knew the location of all the best beaches, shopping, food and was always happy to help us in any way needed. Our favorite place was the village of Tarpum Bay. Everyone was so friendly and made us feel so welcome. By the end of our visit we were on first name basis with so many of the locals we felt like we had become part of the community. If you are looking for a place to stay that is gorgeous, quiet, safe and not too far from the touristy parts of the island, Bellosguardo is for you.
We've been vacationing in Tarpum Bay / Winding Bay for 25 years and this was hands down the best appointed and most beautiful property we've stayed in. Great views and light. Lots of space, very comfortable for six (using the Ikea sofa beds). The white furniture does keep you on your toes, but based on the spare slip covers in the closet the owner won't be surprised by an eventual mishap. All the household goods and appliances needed to make an extended trip comfortable. Plenty of beach items and toys to use. Well groomed grounds. Some minor infrastructure hiccups that are totally expected in the Bahamas (relax, it's part of the experience). All was made right on island time.
This beautiful house is a perfect hidden paradise in Eleuthera. Its location is very private, accessed to a beach where we can kayaking, snorkeling and exploring the mangrove forest nearby. The house is very well equipped for our activities during our stay: cooking inside and outside, playing outdoor or indoor, relaxing... We did fell at home. The dishwasher did not really work while we were there, but everything else was perfect. We only regret that Ms. Latoya, the housekeeper, did not keep up with the rest.
Bellosguardo is a beautifully designed home on a peaceful long smile of a beach that was rarely occupied when we stayed in December just before Christmas. The home is well appointed and there are lots of activities for both adults and kids. It is important to have a rental car to enable grocery shopping and seeing more of Eleuthera. Owner Elizabeth's guide is wonderfully comprehensive. It is a gorgeous home in a superb setting and we'd return in a heartbeat. Carol and Chris, Ontario, Canada
This is a beautiful, unusually designed house on a long smile of a beach along Winding Bay. There were very few people around at any time as it was just pre season and the peace was wonderful. The house is well designed, absolutely gorgeous and has everything you could wish for. Elizabeth's manual is comprehensive and includes local places to visit, eat and shop at. There are lots of items such as kayaks and snorkelling masks, board games and books for outside and inside activities. It is a perfect set up for independent travellers , whether a couple or a family who enjoy being off the beaten track and who make their own fun. A rental car is necessary and shopping is quite good at Rock Sound and delicious lobster tails from Tarpum Bay. Due to the location we found ourselves going out for lunch but cooking at home for dinner whether barbecueing or cooking. We enjoyed the Eleutherans who were friendly and justly proud of their island and towns, sights. We would return in a heartbeat. Though we never met her in person, Elizabeth Wickett was a thoughtful hostess and is represented locally by Latoya Carey who lives not far away and a resourceful property manager. We recommend Bellosguardo and have fond memories of our stay. Carol Rogers, Chris Cunningham, Ontario, Canada

We just returned from a week-long stay at Bellosguardo, a truly gorgeous home situated on Winding Bay Beach, one of the prettiest beaches we have seen (&we have traveled throughout the Caribbean, Mexico and Central America). The photos that the owner, Elizabeth, has posted are exactly what you can expect to find when you walk in the doors of Bellasguardo. Much thought was put into the design/layout of this home, so that you have gorgeous, floor to ceiling ocean front views across the entire back of the home and beautiful garden views across the front. We traveled with our two teen kids and their room and bath room and the master room and bathroom were separated and everyone had plenty of space for our week together. We all found the beds to be very comfortable, and the showers have great shower heads with plenty of water pressure. As Elizabeth mentions, the island has a reverse osmosis filtration system for the water and so we used water straight out of the tap all week, for drinking and for cooking. The study areas are nice for plugging in a laptop or phone, and the kitchen is modern and well-equipped with all utensils/dishware items you might need. It was great to have a modern washer/dryer combo right in the home, so we could do a little laundry as needed. The beach is just steps away from the house& we loved sitting under the beach cabana each day! Even in the July heat, this beach receives constant, cool ocean breezes. The kayaks are wonderful... Elizabeth has left great clear directions about places to take them out (including through the cut to Half Sound) and we had them out every day. The beach is white sand and where the waves reach the shoreline, you'll see pinkish hues in the sand. The water is crystal clear and was as warm as bath water for us this month...wonderful! There is a nice gas grill on the front deck, and we enjoyed grilling out fresh fish (which you can bring in yourself or pick up from the local fishermen who bring it in weekdays around 1p at the pier in Tarpum Bay). Also in Tarpum Bay around dusk, we enjoyed getting fresh conch salad, something the locals prepare, and it is similar to a ceviche...delicious! There are NOT many restaurants in the Winding Bay area& no night life, just fyi. We tried Shantzii's (our fav!),Dolphin Blow Hole, &had a dinner prepared for us by Rosie, at Northside Inn Restaurant&Bar, and also drove up to Tippy's in Governor's Harbor. Rock Sound has a full grocery store&wine shop.
We have been coming to Eleuthera for 15 years and found Bellosguardo to be our favorite home and location yet! Beautifully situated with commanding views of Winding Bay, Bellosguardo is beautifully designed and wonderfully practical for island living. The grounds are lovely, the beach path delightful, and the home spacious and inviting. The waters of Winding Bay were perfect for our young grandchildren while providing plenty of adventuring opportunities for the adults, with kayaking through the cut to Half Sound, diving and fishing for the adults. We had the pleasure of meeting the owners Elizabeth and Steven as we arrived and so appreciated their assistance as we planned for our extended stay. Thank you for sharing your home! We look forward to returning to Bellosguardo!
