Summary:

Backcountry Bungalow

The Space:

The Backcountry Bungalow is a wonderful romantic retreat or escape for your small family. The cute knotty pine interior takes you back in time, providing a sweet, rustic, cabin-in-the-woods feel.

Relax and unwind with plenty of living room seating and a dining table that sits in front of a glass sliding door that frames your fenced backyard. In that lovely outdoor space, you'll have a Trex-type deck with a built-in picnic table and a seasonal grill for afternoon barbecues. Luckily, the yard backs up to a vacant natural area with lots of natural grasses and trees, making you feel a little more removed from the activities on the resort side of Wallowa Lake.

Through the living room is a galley-like kitchen with just enough space to comfortably prepare meals and another door that opens to the backyard. At night, you'll find that the bedroom has an adjoining bathroom (with a shower stall only).

While the home does not have air conditioning, two box fans are provided to keep you cool and comfortable during your stay.

This sweet little cabin is the perfect place for your couple's retreat, your small family vacation, or an opportunity to get away from it all!

THINGS TO KNOW

Seasonal bbqs are available from Memorial Day thru Labor Day. BBQs are propane and tanks are provided. We strongly encourage you to review your tank level in the morning and if a replacement is needed please reach out to your local contact for a tank replacement.

No cable service, but there is a streaming device/VCR/DVD player.

A curtain (instead of a door) separates the bedroom from the living room; the bathroom is accessed through the bedroom.

No fires or firepits are ever allowed due to the heavy timbered area and county restrictions.

This place was a perfect little getaway cabin for wintertime! The bed was very comfortable, the shower was actually very nice and the kitchen had all the amenities we needed for good breakfasts. The VHS player with all the movies was a huge hit with my husband, felt so nostalgic! Being able to bring our dogs along with us was also nice, we appreciated the fenced yard! It is a very rustic, comfortable, older cabin - if you want the cozy feels in the wintertime like we were going for, this is the place!

The cabin was initially pretty cold, but once everything got to temperature, it stayed very cozy. Having a company oversee the rental did make it feel less personal, would like to have clearer check-out information in the cabin rather than having to rely on text and or the app from the company. Overall it was a quiet and restful getaway.

Cute little rustic cabin in the heart of the alpine area at Wallowa Lake. Walking distance to the lake and tram. Our dog enjoyed the fenced backyard for short breaks.

We were in Joseph for a family get together. This small but cozy cabin suited our needs well with one exception. It was 96 degrees during the day and no air conditioning. The fans that were provided did a good job of blowing hot air around the cabin, but “miserable” would be a good word to describe the heat. It did cool down at night, but we would never stay there again in the summer. Would a small window AC unit be too much to expect? And, check in time is 4pm, as the listing said. We arrived at 2pm in the hopes that we could check in a little earlier. After arriving and seeing that the cabin had been cleaned, we called customer service and they said no, so we sat in the driveway for 2 hours until we could get in. Ugggg… In summary, the cabin is cute and comfy. It was well stocked with most things we needed. With ideal temperatures, it would be a great place to stay; however, if you don’t like living and sleeping in 90 degree temps in the summer, I’d suggest you book another property with air conditioning.

All the charm you could wish of a backcountry cabin nestled underneath stately evergreens in the shadow of the Wallowa mountains. The cabin is situated in a little community of cabins close to the lakeside amenities. In the daytime you can hear the baritone hum of the tramway lifting fellow visitors up to the top of Mt. Howard and distant laughter of families enjoying themselves at the park or mini golf. A morning coffe klatch on the back deck with the diligent little juncos, cheerful chipmunks and silently grazing deer with the muffled rush of the Wallowa river punctuated by emphatic Robin song in the background, is a great way to prepare for a day activities. Call ahead to place an order at nearby Vali's Alpine Restaurant for home made doughnuts for an easy morning breakfast. This cabin is ideally located for exploring the park, visiting fun amusements, trails and sites of historical significance, and is a short drive from Joseph proper, where there are shopping, dining and recreational opportunities. Dogs are welcomed at the cabin, so you don't have to leave your best friend behind!
