Eagle Harbor, Michigan
Weekly rental. Saturday to Saturday ONLY.
This 1,500 sq. ft. home is located on Great Sand Bay near the village of Eagle Harbor in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Situated on State Highway M-26, also known as Sand Dunes Drive, the Keweenaw Hodge Podge Lodge is located about halfway between the villages of Eagle River and Eagle Harbor. Frequent visitors to the area will know about The Jampot, just a four or five minute walk to the west.
The original 600 sq. ft., one-story structure was built some 50 years ago and was a typical summer cottage with two rooms: the bedroom with a small bathroom and a great room that contained the kitchen and living space. In the 1990's, a modern two-story 900 sq. ft. addition was completed with two bedrooms and a shared half bath upstairs, while downstairs is the living room and full bathroom complete with tub/shower. The original portion is now open space with the kitchen, dining area and family room all in one area with a separate laundry room.
The house sleeps six with the two bedrooms upstairs, one bedroom with a queen bed and the other with two twin beds and two bunk beds. There is a full bathroom downstairs.
For those that want to cook, there is a refrigerator, stove and oven, charcoal grill, and a variety of cooking utensils available for use. A coffee pot, microwave, crock pot, griddle and toaster oven are also provided. You will need to bring your own cooking supplies, spices, etc.
Very good cell coverage is available from Verizon (that is the only option) at the property but as you travel around the Keweenaw you will find many dead spots and coverage will switch between carriers. WiFi is provided and is the only option for watching television as the home is located in an area that cannot receive a signal and there is no cable or satellite provided. Feel free to bring your own Firestick / Chromecast / Roku device and sign into your home account. Download speeds are approximately 4 - 8 Mbps which is adequate for average resolution. There is a DVD player and a small number of DVDs to watch or bring your own!
Walking out the front door, down five stairs and then about 20 steps brings you to the beach! The washed rocks are smooth and easy to walk on and typically extend just into the water where you will find rocks and sand for a few feet before turning into all sand. The water is clear and clean and can be deceptively cold, after all it is Lake Superior! You can wade, swim or kayak right from the beach. This is the perfect place to spend an afternoon or evening listening to the waves, watching the sunsets and catching a glimpse of the many bald eagles that frequent the shoreline.
Located in the Keweenaw (KEY-wuh-naw) Peninsula, many visitors and locals consider this to be the most beautiful part of the Upper Peninsula. The rugged shoreline is readily accessible to fishermen, boaters, kayakers, divers and swimmers and there are several marinas nearby including Eagle Harbor, Copper Harbor and Lac La Belle as well as several boat launches providing access to smaller lakes. The inland areas are heavily wooded with maples, oaks, poplars and pines creating beautiful fall colors that rival many of the New England sights.
Just 18 miles away is Copper Harbor, the "end of the road", or as the sign says it is the beginning of US41. Only 1990 miles to Miami. Copper Harbor has become a destination for mountain biking and kayaking in the summer and downhill skiing and dog sled racing in the winter. From there, you can catch the Isle Royale Queen and take the 3 to 4 hour boat ride to Isle Royale National Park.
The main reason people visit is for the beauty, the peaceful environment and a reminder of how things used to be. Enjoy your stay!

This was just what I needed for fun adventures as well as peaceful rejuvenation. The property is a perfect setting for someone looking to spend time in a beautiful, out of the busyness of the world place. Property and area provided perfect space for those looking for more remote setting without the fancy of expensive home. So comfortable and host was fantastic.
One of the cleanest places I've ever rented. We'll be back.
Thoroughly enjoyed this property. Nice, well maintained place with an amazing view and beautiful beach. Everything went smoothly and Rick was easy to communicate with. Hope to stay again sometime! Thanks for the hospitality!
Can’t say enough nice things about the property and the host. Great location, found agates and yooperlites. The host was very helpful and knowledgeable about the area restaurants. Very clean and organized, we were comfortable. Enjoyed the sunsets and Keweenaw sights. Thank you!
We had such a fantastic time at Hodge Podge Lodge! Rick is a tremendous host, the house is exactly as it appears in the pictures, and the location cannot be beat! Beautiful views no matter the day or time. We are so fortunate to have found it and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a place to escape to in the Keweenaw Peninsula.
Great time at a great location
We really enjoyed our stay at Hodge Podge Lodge! There is easy access to a beautiful rock beach, at which we spent lots of time hunting for agates and other pretty stones. There was a bit of a steep slope to get our sea kayak from the driveway down to the beach, but once down, there was plenty of space to leave it safely by the beach when we weren't using it. The lodge has an older section with a newer addition and there are gorgeous views of the lake from the many windows. We frequently saw lake freighters on the horizon and had a few amazing sunsets. Everything was clean and well kept. Rick lives right next door, so was readily available if there were any problems. There's a wonderful sand beach just a few miles down the road and a monastery that sells delicious jams and baked goods within walking distance. We didn't get cell service (AT&T network), but the Wifi was more than adequate. It was a great place to get away!
Good Base camp for exploring the NW part of the Keweenaw.
The thing we liked best about this property is that it's right on Lake Superior. Because it's not in a bay or inlet, you get to see and hear the waves crashing on shore, especially when it's a little rough. Going to sleep, it was wonderful to have the window open and hear the lake. The rocky beach is a great place for a fire, and the sunsets were fantastic. Every day we saw a few freighters, and my son and I liked being able to look up the name of the ship, where it was headed, and the cargo it was carrying or picking up. The house itself worked well for us. We make all of our dinners, and the kitchen was up to the task. The Jampot just down the road is a plus, but don't be surprised if you have to wait in a line, it's very popular. The location on Copper Island is central to a lot of places you will want to see. The Quincy Smelter is a great tour, I've never been on any tour quite like it. The hosts were easy to work with, and we wouldn't hesitate to stay again.
My sisters and I loved our stay at the Hodge Podge Lodge! The house was clean and comfortable, exactly as pictured. Rick, our host, was very accommodating and helpful. The view of Lake Superior was spectacular, and we spotted a pair of eagles in the trees near the deck. It was an easy drive to the area's nature trails and preserves, and we enjoyed many walks along the Lake Superior shoreline. We plan to return next year.
