Wilmington, North Carolina
Nestled on a secluded salt marsh tidal creek that leads to the nearby Intracoastal Waterway and Atlantic Ocean via kayak or canoe, Eagle Point on the Bay offers the privacy, beauty, and nature of a rural location, yet is close to urban, coastal, and academic amenities. Near the neighborhoods of Porters Neck and Figure Eight Island, the home is 3 miles to major grocery stores, coffee shops, restaurants, shopping, and a seafood market. Beautiful beaches at the coastal community of Wrightsville Beach are only 15 minutes where there is also a branch of the New Hanover County Public Library, a health food store, and kayak/paddleboard/watersport rentals. The colonial city of Wilmington and its historic district and riverfront park is only 14 miles. Other area attractions include Airlie Gardens, the North Carolina Aquarium, the Boardwalk at Carolina Beach, historic Fort Fisher, and the Battleship North Carolina. There are numerous golf courses in the area.
Most of the neighbors are permanent residents. Bald Eagle Lane dead ends with only a handful of homes beyond ours, and so there is very little traffic, certainly no through traffic, making it ideal for bicycling and walking. From our front porch and street view between the single row of waterfront homes to the Intercoastal Waterway and the vast salt marsh across which sits the oceanfront private barrier island of Figure Eight Island (gated community). The view from the back of the house is across the tidal creek to the other shore lined with century old live oaks and the private, exclusive golf course Eagle Point adding to the green and natural vistas.
Enjoy birdwatching for osprey, herons (great grey, white, green), pelicans, kingfishers, cardinals, and maybe catch a glimpse of the shy, brightly-colored painted bunting. From our private pier and dock we enjoy, fishing, crabbing, kayaking, and watching the sunset and tidal shifts. With the daily changing tide, every 24 hours the creek water level swings through a spectacular scenic high tide, at times nearly to pier level, through a "dead" low tide exposing areas of the creek bottom and its breeding ground for schools of leaping minnows and crabs. A channel running in front of the pier allows for kayak launch most of the time to access the bay and beyond to the Intercoastal Waterway and salt marsh explorations. We have three sit-on-top kayaks available for your use: a two-person kayak; a one-person kayak; and a one-person fishing kayak. Walking or swimming in the creek is not allowed due to sharp oyster shells and unstable mud creek bottom. For information about tide rise and fall (water depth) consult local tide charts. The creek may not be navigable at the lowest tide.
The house has two bedrooms and full bath on the ground level, two bedrooms and full bath on the second level, and additional half-bath on ground level. Two of the bedrooms have a television, and the televisions with their Roku boxes can be moved to a different bedroom as needed. Two of the common areas have a television. The light and airy sunroom is lined with large windows overlooking the salt marsh and tidal creek. Also on the ground level is a private den, family room, kitchen with connected dining area overlooking the salt marsh creek. Surrounding the house are native plants including live oak tree, cherry blossom, and dogwood trees providing abundant shade, as well as azalea and holly berry shrubs, palmetto trees, and lawn areas. Detached from the house is a wooden shaded gazebo with a porch swing with a view of the waterfront, a lovely spot during summer rain showers. Other outside spaces include a large deck off the sunroom, a small deck off the kitchen/dining with a nearby rope hammock, and a small front porch.
In addition to all the basic furnishings, equipment, and supplies, please feel free to use any of our books, cards, games, puzzles, yoga mat, bicycles (4) and two kayaks. Lifejackets are located in the garage and must be worn at all times when using the kayak. Children must be accompanied by adults on the kayaks. Parties and events are not allowed.
This was a wonderful experience for our first time staying at a house and using VRBO.
Jana’s home was absolutely perfect for our getaway. We had 3 adults and 3 teenagers and had more than enough room and space. Our vacation was one of no plans and we found ourselves having a slow morning of making breakfast (highly recommend stocking up on local produce from Biggers Market) and fishing or kayaking. Every single thing we want d to do was within a 30 minute drive (all three beaches included). Jana was an exceptional host who you can tell takes pride and loves her home. She was there when we needed her, but that didn’t really happen more than once and she allowed us to really be at home in her home. We now have a teenager who is interested in UNCW, so we will definitely be staying again when we visit the area!
We loved out visit and this was a great way to extend a family vacation with family on a nearby island. The hosts were amazing, responsive and extended early check-in/late check-out as their calendar allowed, The house is well kept and equipped and the kitchen was really easy - stocked pantry with necessities, etc. Beds are very comfortable! Truly, this house has it all and we'd stay again. My only note would be that whoever stayed before us smoked and it lingered. I normally wouldn't object but it LINGERED. The cleanliness of the home was never in question. Truly - loved the old-style Carolina cottage vibe!
Our first time visiting family in Wilmington and it certainly will not be our last. The homes location is secluded and we loved the beauty of the dock and exploring surrounding waterway. We celebrated July 4th and used about every amenity we could. Paddle board, kayaks, fishing poles. The home is stocked with everything needed. We cooked a generous amount of food and had pans, crockpot and all utensils at our fingertips. (not always the case when you travel) Beds were comfortable, three bathrooms for a crowd is a plus. The kids loved the beaches, 15 minutes away. Communication with owner was as needed. She was aways available and helpful but not intrusive. We were satisfied in every way.
Cozy, inviting home. It was well stocked with all the extras I needed like beach chairs, umbrella, extra towels, etc. The property owner was very nice and accommodating. We will definitely stay here again when in the area.
Jana's house was perfect for our group. There were multiple places to hang out outside, tons of wildlife to watch, and the house itself has a great set up. I'd definitely rent it again!
Rented this property to spend Thanksgiving with family. There were 6 of us, including 3 teen/young adults; a grand parent and my husband and I. The property allowed for all to have their own space. The property is nice and allowed for some kayaking when tide was in, which we enjoyed. Access to the waterfront was limited to the property given the lay out of the community. Community was nice to walk in, friendly people. Owners were very accommodating and great to work with. We enjoyed our time.
Supper easy process and very nice accommodations.
Exactly as described and pictured. Went crabbing but they were all to small, but still had fun. Seen some deer across the marsh. Had a lot of Egrets come and set on the dock. It did rain for the first 3 days so we enjoyed watching tv and playing some games. Beds were nice and comfortable. The trees and bushes made for a privacy feel. If we ever decide to go back to Wilmington, we would try to rent again. We had a good laugh when we chase a skink lizard around the sunporch trying to catch him or chase him out after he snuck in when we opened the screen door. Any questions we had were promptly answered by the homeowner. Lots of information on the area in a notebook compiled by homeowner.
We couldn’t have picked a better location! The house, the views everything was absolutely beautiful ?. Very clean, you have every necessity that you have at home, from the spices to the condiments to the frosty mugs in the freezer. Jana was very responsive and professional. We went crabbing fishing kayaking bike riding. You are close to shops if you needed to go. We enjoyed the house so much!!! Very much needed relaxation!
