Sparta is a quiet small town with a lot to offer. For the bicycle enthusiast we are the Bicycling Capital of America. Whether you bring your own bikes or rent them you will have easy access to 100's of miles of scenic rail beds including several historic tunnels. For the motorcyclists we are part of the Driftless Region of hilly, winding country roads.
During the warmer months Sparta has the 18 hole River Run golf course and a new city aquatic center with a zero entry pool, giant slide and lazy river. There are also canoeing and kayaking opportunities on several nearby waterways. The Mississippi River is just 30 minutes away with its majestic scenery and river boats.
We are also home to Fort McCoy, an active Army training base, complete with its museums. During the winter it also has a small skiing/tubing hill open to the public.
More information on Amish tours, local museums, shopping opportunities and special events is available from the Sparta Chamber of Commerce.
9 friends gathered for four days of sewing and socializing. The well kept home is prairie style; equipped with all the necessities and very clean! The home is within walking distance of downtown shopping and a few restaurants. This is our 5th annual stay with plans again for next year!
We selected this property so we could ride directly to the Sparta-Elroy bike trail. It is a nice prairie style house with beautiful wood accents and fully stocked with cooking accessories and serving dinner ware. The house was surface-clean but kinda dirty in the corners, etc. The only akward thing was that there are no blinds on the windows and that beautiful dining room shines brightly from the street of a very busy corner. Makes you feel like you’re sitting in a storefront. The neighborhood is very small town Wisconsin with a struggling economy. One diner in town for breakfast but not a lot else. There are, however with really nice places for dinner a 30-minute drive away in LaCrosse. The bike trail was great- we rode 20 miles one way one day and 30 to Elroy the other and crossed through one of the iconic tunnels. Lots of other outdoor options near LaCrosse.
Nice location for biking around town and to the Elroy Sparta
This is the second time we 80 year old nurses have gathered to share memories in Sparta. This old home reminds us of our days at Edith Mayo while nursing students in Rochester back in the 60s It’s immaculately maintained Eric is easy to work with and we took a vote it unanimous “We Shall Return!”
We came to Sparta to bike the Elroy/Sparta trail. We enjoyed our time in this spacious house. It was clean, beds were comfy and the kitchen has everything needed to cook a meal. There is a bit of traffic noise both on the front porch and during the night. I would recommend bringing a fan or air purifier to drown it out for sleeping.
This was our second visit. We came to do the Sparta/Elroy bike tunnels. We had a great time walking through the long tunnel and coming out into a pouring rain. Came back to a hot shower, good dinner and a fantastic family game of Pictionary. We'd planned an outdoor fire, but it was raining. What a great place. There was everything there for a family group.
great
Everything was perfect.
Great place to stay! We enjoyed the charm of the Prairie House! Eric (owner) was very friendly and explained some of the history of the house. There were 6 adults for our stay....plenty of room. Fun time sitting on the porch, either for morning coffee or a beverage for happy hour in the afternoon. We enjoyed the bike trails so it sure was nice to be located so close. All in our group were very complimentary with our stay.
We came in for a family reunion and my whole branch was able to stay together and it was perfect! The house is stunning… We will see you again in 2 years!
Visiting family. House has plenty of room and the front porch was our favorite spot - great for visiting with family or just enjoying quiet time in the morning with your coffee. Location was good - there is a park just a block down the street that the kids enjoyed.
Clean and comfortable home. It was in a quite and calm neighborhood. We enjoyed our stay. Very close to Sparta city and convenient.
We had a great time in Sparta--Biked the trail twice. We had a great meal at Fox Hole restaurant and great breakfast at Dorines. The house was great--everything you need. The owner brought us a gas grill which was great. Nice we could put the bikes in the garage overnight,
We spent two nights in this beautiful craftsman home remembering 61 years of a wonderful friendship in a very special home. We look forward to returning in the fall. I have stayed at many VRBOs this home is one of the best finds. Thank you we shall return
Very well stocked. The listing didn't mention the great side and back yard. The kiddos loved it. Traffic noise was a negative. We came for the bike rides. Weather was perfect.
What a beautiful house in a nice, convenient area of Sparta. This 100+ year old house had plenty of room and such amazing woodwork. Beds were comfy (there are plenty of them) and it had all the amenities we needed. Gave this 5 stars overall even though there was a glitch in getting in. (Door code didn't work but Eric responded within 15 minutes and met us there.) Only other issue is that this is described as 2 full baths but it's really just 1.5. Only one shower. We made it work easily since there was a second bath and only 2 of us. If you have a lot of people staying there, that could be a consideration. Other than that, a thoroughly enjoyable place to stay. (The pushbutton light switches are pretty cool.)
Clean, comfortable. Close to bike trail.
